Hell yes!
It's about time. The first two games were great.

eta: be sure and submit this as news.
I don't know how I feel about Max Payne's new undershirt/suspenders (shoulder holster strap?) + Obadiah Stane look but I liked the first 2 well enough. Well, I liked the the second one much, much less because I had the misfortune of playing it on my PS2 but if I'd been playing it on PC it would have been great.

It's not being done by the same studio that did the first 2 though so I'll be interested to see what they do.
Yeah, Rockstar?
That was unexpected.

Bring it on!
Reading this thread made me realize I'm pretty sure I never played the 2nd one, which is weird. I guess I'll see if Steam has it cheap.
You can pick up both games for under $5 from GameStop, fwiw.
Yeah I picked up the PS2 version because I was in Best Buy and saw it for less than $10 a couple years ago. The save system on it was so frustrating (no quick-save and no auto-save) that it took me a long time to finally trudge through it. The gameplay itself was good enough it was just the little stuff that made it really frustrating. I would strongly recommend just picking up the PC version.
They are on Steam. The two are available in a bundle for $14.99. The two are available individually for $9.99. Get em if you haven't played them.
aww Hell Yeahhh
I'm half-giddy and half-leery right now. I'm giddy because I love the Max Payne series to death, but I'm leery because this will be Max Payne without Remedy developing it.
I definitely played and beat the first one. The last level is one of my favorite last levels of all time, actually. The game was good enough that I forgave the nearly unforgiveable trifecta of "Blood trail into space", "Stoned blood trail into space" and "Restaurant fire" levels. The fact that I still remember each of those levels and my anger vividly this long after the fact is scary.

So $10 to play part 2 seems like a good deal.
The games were pretty impressive for their time, but what's supposed to be the hook this time? He has a beard? And since Stranglehold used up all the world's supply of bullet time, what's left for Max Payne to do?
Anyone who owns Max Payne needs Kung Fu Max Payne.

I was going to say if Rockstar doesn't rip off the Kung Fu mod then I don't see where this one could go interesting.
Hopefully they don't try to make it a 'sandbox' city or something like that.
Woke up late, great news to read in my inbox- http://chud.com/articles/articles/18...ARK/Page1.html
post #18 of 203
"This is Max as we’ve never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever"

That's exactly how I remember him.
I really hope they don't take away his ridiculous narration. That helped make the whole game for me. I'd also be disappointed if they didn't have the same voice actor back.
So they're combining the Max Payne and Condemned franchises? Ok, Rockstar. You win. Sweet ass 3rd person slo-mo tomfoolery and first person bum fight shenanigans.

Wait, sorry. Just my dream from seeing the down n' dirty Payne mug. At least he doesn't look like he needs to shit anymore. Just like he doesn't care if he does. In his pants. 'Cause he looks like a hobo.
I am slightly apprehensive with no Remedy and I assume no Sam Lake.

But it is Rockstar Vancouver on point, and Bully was fantastic.

So if this comes out this year and is ace, along with Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar has my money.

Now about a Bully sequel...

I didn't really need Max Payne to go the Splinter Cell route..
A game with a completely different looking, sounding and dressed character in a completely different city and setting....

Drakes Fortune and GTA:IV set the bar pretty high, it's on my radar but only as a blip man. Only as a blip.
Holy cow, I wasn't expecting them to go in THAT direction for 'Max Payne 3'. I must admit, the look/feel of the first two games was a big factor in my enjoyment of them. Take that out and I'm not all that interested.
This looks more like Kane & Lynch than Max Payne. If it's not overblown noir then it's not Max Payne.

"Read it the next time you're suckered-in to shopping at GameStop"

This is funny, Alex. Even you aren't immune to the internet's famous "let's hate GameStop!" tirade?

I may be a little partial since I work there, and I don't always agree with their practices, but this shit is tired.

Funny, that's the game I thought of first when I opened the screens. It's definitely a weird choice. You guys think this is going to turn everyone off? I mean, if the bullet time is still intact and it has those nifty graphic novel cutscenes it could work. I'm a little sad to see the dark, watery city gone but this really has me intrigued.
If they can make me feel like this is the guy, 10 years after MP2, and this is how he ended up there. I may be willing to bite. Given his history from the first two, a bald, sweaty, and stained wife-beater wearing Max Payne going on a vendetta against some South American drug organization could end up interesting.

Key will be how ridiculous the voice-over monologues are.

Didn't you say this the last time I wrote something mean about your pawn shop?

I may have. I don't worship the company, believe me, but I expect the bashing from the commenters over at Kotaku, certainly not you. Hey, say whatever you want, what the hell do I care?
I don't know, you're the one who brought it up!

And just so you know, I go out of my way to not shop at Gamestop if I don't have to. When I buy a game I don't want to get hassled for magazine subscriptions or preorders or pick up a used game that's 5 bucks cheaper than the new one. I don't want to support a store that doesn't care how much it's hurting the industry.

But anyway, back to Payne...

"When did they recast Max Payne with Zangief?" - friend of mine just asked.
I was gonna go with Common, but that'll do.
Given Rockstar's tendencies to eschew expectations I fully expect the majority of this game to take place in a group therapy session.

"Hi my name is Max and I'm VERY angry"

You could have bullet time hugging sessions.

I'm still not sold on this. To me, this isn't what Max Payne should be. Does it look gritty? Yes. But the noir aspect of it was always its strong point and I hope in some way that's maintained.

As long as the over the top internal monologues are there - "My hugbuddy, Kenneth; An awkward smile and B.O. like Lucifer's armpit after a game of table tennis with all the fallen angels."

That could work.

"The diluted orange drink, our only nourishment on this unforgiving night. Our only respite from the dark and tonight I was going to need all the respite I could get"

CRUSHES PAPER CUP DRAMATICALLY
They should have started with pictures that at least involved rainy nights. Bald wife beater Max in South America still could have looked like Max if it was dark and rainy. And there was neon.

It's like they're so interested in showing how "different" this is that they wanted to cut every possible connection to the old games. They need to ease us into these things, convince us it's similar and then smack us with shots like this right as it releases.

Agreed. Right now it looks like Max Uncharted.
You punks can bite me. Aging, balding, out-of-shape detective fighting against the odds? It's my fucking life story. Looks awesome to me. Noir doesn't have to be dark and rainy, you know.
No James McCaffrey = downgrade from 'cautious optimism' to 'cautious'.

The voice of a character, especially when the voice is used so often, is the essence of the character. You can change whatever you want about a character's appearance and motivations, but so long as they retain the voice they're still recognizable. It'd be like playing a Splinter Cell game without Michael Ironside or Metal Gear without David Hayter.

Maybe it'll wind up good. Who knows? All I know is that without Sam Lake's writing and James McCaffrey's voice, Max Payne 3 feels more like "The Violent Misadventures of Sadsack McShootemall."

Max Payne 3
''Die Hard' as a Hobo with a Shotgun'?

Hell, yeah!!!

(but, does he STILL do the constipated-face?)

Looks like hobo-Tomb Raider. too bad. I pass.

I picture the sequel brainstorming at Rockstar something like this:

"What made Max Payne great people?"
"New York in a snowstorm, abandoned streets at night, the cops and mafia out to kill Max, femme fatales, a floating coat, Hard Boiled-sequences and a film noir story"
"Yeah"
"yeah"
"yeah let's throw all of this out, make him bald, older and fatter and put him in daylight jungles". Maybe keep the drug thugs.
"yeah"
"yeah"

FUCK EM
You know, sometimes you people suck.

Have you ZERO imagination?
Speaking purely as an outsider here--that is, I got about halfway through the first Max Payne, liked it, but don't feel any sort of loyalty to the character--Whoever thinks Rockstar's making a big mistake letting an established, loved character leave their comfort zone and explore an environment that doesn't seem to fit him at all, please go back, play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, particularly, anything after the Green Sabre mission, then kindly shut your fucking trap.
First, he lost his family.
Then, he lost his job.
Now, he's lost his hair and his jacket...

SO they take the one element that made Max Payne interesting, the visual style and flair (since Bullet time has been done by a lot of games since then)

and Max is now Beef McBaldbeard?

I hate to sound like an angry fanboy, but we don't really need a Max Payne 3, let alone one that looks like the name has been slapped on to get brand recognition.

It's the same R* team behind Bully, so i'm sure it will play fantastically, but so far it doesn't have that which will hook me in.

Cautious leaning towards against.
