But games are different in that one currently has to invest in nearly $1000 in different "media players" to play all available games. To say nothing of PC hardware.

If there was unified hardware for games this would be a lot less useful, but there isn't.

I assumed unified hardware was consoles. There's not a financial saving to be made on hardware here - these games are only playing back at 720p, which is a pretty low resolution for most PC games (you don't need to spend $500 on a card to achieve the results) and it seems you'll need one of these devices to realistically play it in your living room.

The on-demand aspect of this seems to have so much more potential, but the streaming technology looks amazing.

at this point, the streaming tech looks like a bunch of marketing hype to get investors

I'd like to see a white paper or RFC on the tech

So Sony registered something called "Playstation Cloud" which, until clarified further - is an online game streaming service.

Obviously it's vague and could be absolutely anything, but assuming it's what is being implied - and considering the cost that launching new consoles has put on these companies, is it possible to think perhaps Sony won't bother with a PS4? Why update the technology at the user's end (at Sony's cost) when you can just stream a whole new generation's worth of content over the internet.

Bear in mind this original "10 year lifespan" for the PS3 and how little time it'd give ISPs to up their broadband coverage. PC and console gaming delivered in the same way you watch TV?!

EDIT:

Kotaku seem to think there's a possibility it's remote account-specific content (much like Steam offers)

And, since the Kindle has been mentioned, does anyone know how DRM works with it? Could a friend lend me his ebook, or sell it for 25 cents? If not, I grumpily resist.
No, you can't lend an eBook. It is just like downloading a game onto your PC or console. You can lend the console/computer/Kindle to your friend, but not the content by itself.

On the other side, you can have multiple Kindles (up to 5, I think) hooked up to one account. My Mother-in-law got the new Kindle and gave us the old one. It has all of her already purchased books on it (which she could automatically put on her new Kindle at no charge), and any time either one of us downloads a book, the other has access to it.
