Lollapalooza 2009

Who's thinking of going?

I went last year, and if the rumored headliners turn out to be true (which according to Perry Farrell's sly non-answer recently, they are), then I must attend once again, money be damned.

Rumored headliners are: Depeche Mode, The Killers, Jane's Addiction, Beastie Boys, Kings of Leon, and TOOL.

The three older acts are all confirmed, and Tool and the Killers are supposedly "locks". The Kings, I don't know, that rumor popped up a few weeks ago but then I never heard any follow up.

Doesn't have much on last year's lineup, but having never seen the Killers or Kings, the two of them would be enough to get me there. Even with only one, I'll probably go anyway once the undercard starts filling out.

Tool is my favorite band touring today, and I love Depeche Mode (never seen them). I also really dig Jane's. I love the Beasties, but they're the type of act I wouldn't bust my ass to see by themselves.

But I'm borderline obsessive about seeing Tool live, and cannot pass up what may be the only opportunity for a while to see them again (assuming this will be a one-off show between albums).

Depending on the undercard, I may like this lineup more than last year. Although that's going to be tough to beat NIN and Radiohead at the same festival.

I'll also take ANY excuse to spend a weekend in Chicago.

I'm going. Got the $60 golden tickets( i know I posted this earlier in a different thread, sorry to be redundant). Had to refersh the site all day for like 3 days since they don't tell you when they are going on sale.

Early bird tickets are on sale on 3/31, I believe and while not cheap, you can save like $60-70(for 2). they sell very fast though. After that they will confirm lineup, but what you have listed above is pretty much guaranteed.

I actually saw Tool at Lollaplooza years ago. Too bad Korn, Prodigy, and Orbital were also on the bill but cancelled for the Chicago date.... Tool made it worth while though.

Depeche Mode was the second concert I ever saw, after U2, and they put on a great show. Can't wait to see them outdoors.

Official billing is out. Like I suspected, the undercard dwarfs headliners in my book. We got:

Depeche Mode
Tool
The Killers
Jane's Addiction
Beastie Boys
Kings of Leon
Lou Reed
Ben Harper and the Relentless 7
Thievery Corporation
Snoop Dogg
Rise Against
Andrew Bird
TV On The Radio
Vampire Weekend
The Decemberists
Neko Case
Sound Tribe Sector 9
Animal Collective
Of Montreal
Band of Horses
Arctic Monkeys

Pretty sweet. Nice mix of fuck yeah!s (Bird, TV, Reed), bands I expect to put on a good outdoor rock show (Killers, Kings, Jane's, Horses, Decemberists), guys I always meant to get around to listening to (Tool, Vampire, Thievery, Harper, Animal), and a couple old folks that I don't care much about seeing live anymore but may anyway (Snoop, Beasties).

Getting pretty stoked.

I wish the Arctic Monkeys would just get their third album out already. They have been playing several new songs on their sets, very good ones, so they're obviously close.

I gotta say, I'm not that enthused about the line-up this year. More excited for Pitchfork, in some ways. Yeah, Lolla's undercard is more impressive to me personally. Keep in mind, I'm not much of a Jane's fan (anymore) or a KOL fan either. I suppose the headliners I'm most curious to see are Tool, The Killers and Depeche Mode. Beastie Boys? Saw them the first time they headliner Lolla back in the '90s. Granted they were great then, but I haven't been into a Beasties record since around that point either.

I'm with you, Zeus. Those headliners are pretty brutal, especially compared to last year. Depeche Mode headlining? Really?
As a fan of a handful of those bands, that line-up is fucking boring as all get out.
There'll be at least 2 shows each day I'll definitely want to see, and a few others I'll be curious about. The headliners are a yawn, but let's not kid ourselves: I'll be so drunk by that time of night I won't know what I'm hearing. All I remember of Wilco last year was a bunch of sequins and I think they maybe played "You Are My Face".

I didn't even finish the list before. Also appearing will be about 25 more acts, including:

Coheed and Cambria
Gaslight Anthem
White Lies
Atmosphere
Santogold
Silversun Pickup
Cold War Kids
Kaiser Chiefs
Ben Folds
Fleet Foxes

Gaslight Anthem and Cold War Kids are nice. The rest? Crap.

Okay, crap is extreme, but it's not great.

There's plenty in that lineup to keep me diverted for a couple afternoons. But you have my permission not to go if you don't wanna.
Don't mind me - I'm still just pissed off that I didn't go last year. The lineup this year is just making me more annoyed that I didn't make it.

I just felt like I had somehow been cast as the evangelizer for the show all of a sudden, which is not what I meant to do. I had a blast last year (my first time), was very disappointed at the headliner announcements a few weeks back, and the filling out of the lineup revived some of my enthusiasm.

But yeah, Depeche Mode? No idea what the thought process there was. I guess I just have to hope their tour bus breaks down somewhere between 1987 and Grant Park, and Andrew Bird has to man up and play a 3.5 hour set.
Well, Silversun Pickups is pretty darn good, but they played 2 years ago. I hope they have a new album out.

They released a new album last week.

I certainly wouldn't say they're still relevant, but Depeche Mode's last two albums were interesting, at least.

There should probably be a separate 2010 thread for this, but this is so awful, I just don't care anymore. I already got $60 "golden" tickets and I almost feel like I'm getting ripped off....

That's yucky.

My parents have a condo right on Grant Park and I've always wanted to head down there for the Lollapalooza weekend but I've had weddings that I had to go to that weekend for the past 4 years.

It looks like this won't be the year it finally happens.
