I really am curious if any of you have ever watched any of the shows. I'm not even fully convinced that they exist.

I'm more bitterly disappointed at the trajectory of Bobby Carlyles career.

I mean, Diamond Phillips is understandable. Really, he is - Young Guns and The First Power were another age ago.

But Robert fucking Carlyle?!?!? Seriously he's brilliant, what the fuck?

Is that Ming Na?

I watched the other two Stargates off and on. Atlantis was really terrible. I think it was the hot guys that kept me tuning in. Carlisle and Diamond Phillips might be like Robert Patrick in Atlantis and be killed off in the pilot, though. If that makes anyone feel better.

That's my exact response -- I have yet to meet someone that regularly watches any sort of SG show. Everyone is aware of them, sure...but that's it.

Also, the plot sounds familiar to what? (honest question -- I can't figure it out)

Soldiers, scientists and civilians forced onto an "ancient ship", headed for an unknown course and trying to find their way to Earth. Trying to find food and water and survive... and there are villains living among them! Not ringing any bells?

I was convinced it couldn't be BSG...so please to point me to the window where I return my geek card.

I guess I'll chime in to say I sort of dig the Stargate shows. I was always a big fan of the original flick (for better or worse) and was curious about the SG-1 show when it first started. I think I watched the first episode WAY back when it used to be on Showtime I believe (?), but then never really paid it much mind. Like most shows I got into them more on DVD (always a great place to go for TV show fans) and never really followed them when they were on the air. In recent years I've been trying to catch the shows I like as they air (like Lost). I usually miss the boat on great TV or jump on board when it's already too late (like I did with Angel).

I will never say that the Stargate shows are great TV, but I will say that I find them to be highly enjoyable. It stems mostly from the cast. The SG-1 show was on for 10 years and the cast fits together very well and they have a great rapport. Atlantis is similar. I dig the way the cast gels and I dig a bunch of the characters on both shows (as cookie cutter as some/most of them may be). Nothing ground breaking, nothing that hasn't been well worn elsewhere, Nothing that doesn't sometimes make no sense if you think about it for 2 seconds, but the casts have worked for me and thus the shows have worked for me. It also helps that the shows rarely take themselves too seriously, and it shows.

As for the new show, I don't know what to think. Perhaps I'll give it a shot, but who know. If for nothing else, I fell liek I have to see it to see what Robert Carlisle, Lou diamond Phillips, and Ming na are getting themselves into!

I tried watching the SG-1 and made it through the first 4 seasons....it took alot of patience. I had friends who swore by this show, and only MacGyver kept me going.

My father-in-law watches all of them pretty religiously, but he also spends all day every day smoking weed and playing Nascar PC games, and thinks that Battlefield Earth is one of the greatest movies ever made.

I don't know if you can call it "trying" to watch a show, if you hung around for four fucking seasons. "Trying" to watch a show is giving a half a season MAYBE, or one season at most (Example: I seriously enjoyed the first Season of Heroes and called myself a fan; Then I suffered through the 2nd season and said I would "try" to give it another chance; I watched ONE episode of the 3rd and said FUCK YOU Heroes). Sorry friend, You did more than try. You watched the turd and now you're in denial.

It's nice that I can now pretty much wash my hands of the Sy-fucking-Fy channel.

Seriously, quit dicking around SyFy, just rename yourself the Stargate Channel and be done with it.

Because Doc, if they did that, you wouldn't know it was also the Shitty Original Movie channel.

I like SG-1, but it was hit or miss. The second one was crap. This is Voyager or Crusade.

fwiw. Stargate sg1 (I haven't seen any of the others) is a fun, lighthearded, yet plot filled show. Its not "the wire" but characters make repeat appearances and a thread is there which forms the mythology of the show.

I know several people who watch it, so maybe my ilk simply don't mix with yours.

My wife and I watched the original series (even going so far as to subscribing to Showtime when it was part of their original programming). As with anything, it declined in the later years. Out of loyalty, we stuck with it until the end of the run.

Atlantis was unwatchable and the new series looks even worse. SG-1 was good for what it was - a niche, star-driven SciFi show that didn't take itself too seriously. It had enough continuity to keep the rabid fans happy without turning into Star Trek.

It also pulled some pretty good guest stars in enjoyable roles over the years.

I don't get the animosity towards the SG series. It's tucked away on the sci-fi channel, it doesn't bother anyone, it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, it doesn't exactly shit all over your other network/cable shows. Unless there's some history where sci-fi has backed Stargate over something else that was beloved amongst the THUD gang? Don't get it.

And yes, I've watched just about every single episode of SG1 and Atlantis. Nowhere near my favourite show, or even top 30, but compared to most other sci-fi shows that come and go it's been an enjoyable romp. Yes it can get incredibly shitty, but it's also capable of amazing episodes too. And come on, Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks are the shit (Burn Notice fans, represent!)

i will admit to watching Stargate SG1 fairly regularly for the first 6? years . Then when Michael Shanks left i bolted. When he came back I came back too. But my loyalty chipped away slowly and I couldn't hang on til the end. I tried watching Stargate Atlantis. I remember watching 3 episodes in a row and failing to remember any character's name. I watched one or 2 episodes after that and said 'screw this". This new Stargate looks like shite. This concept needs to be buried for good.

Stargate is shot in a studio about a block from where I live on Boundry road in Burnaby. Thanks for clarifying this. Whenever I saw the sign I assumed Universe meant it was a tv movie or something similar, because I was only familiar with the two shows. Good to know.
