Comic suggestions for a 6 year old girl

I have a rather large collection but none that would excite a friend's daughter. I have toyed with the idea of taking her to the local shop which I have not set foot in for at least two years. I stopped collecting around that time.

Her brother has some Batman figures and I told her about Batgirl.

Any ideas on places to start her that wouldn't, and this is key, be offensive to her Mormon father?

Runaways might be pushing it.

But, there's always I KILL GIANTS, HEROBEAR AND THE KID and MY MONKEY'S NAME IS JENNIFER.

For some reason I am instantly suspicious.

Google 'em, pedo.

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam. It's good, clean fun with the added bonus of being really good.

Get her a Calvin and Hobbes collection. Sure it may lean more towards being a "boy's comic", but it's greatness and doesn't lose it's luster with age.

Sure it's strips, which is a cheat, but still. It's timeless.

STINKY is particularly great-

Some fun comics with strong little girl leading characters are
JELLYBY and MAGIC PICKLE.

If you want to kick it old school, you can't go wrong with LITTLE LULU.

If you're looking for something more traditional, the aforementioned SHAZAM! is excellent. If you're looking for a simpler 24 page floppy, DC has some servicable titles such as TINY TITANS. The Marvel Adventures line is kind of touch and go, but I'd reccomend Spider-Man or Fantastic Four. Most comic shops and B&N stores carry digest sized collections.

Bone by Jeff Smith.

This is a good idea as well.
But my daughter loves C&H more than I did. Other hit comic strips include Peanuts, Lio and Get Fuzzy.

TzuDohNihm, Well...there is Star Wars Clone Wars, they sell digest size for $10. Marvel Adventures, and DC's Superfriends are aimed at the younger set. For non superhero or Star Wars...there is always, Betty And Veronica, Archie comics also collected in digest form. There is also Manga like...Speed Racer. I do not know if a Mormon would dislike...Gon (he is a mini dinosaur), but a lot of pre-teen children seem to like them.

Actually, start at the beginning with the Jeff Smith miniseries, the Monster Society of Evil, which is officially the "prequel" to that series.

And has some great Aligator Men action.
"EAT THE CHILDREN!"

You can check the back issue bins for Justice League Unlimited and DC has recently released Supergirl: Adventures in the 8th Grade. You also can't go wrong with Bone ever.

Tiny Titans would be perfect. It's very funny and the characters are cutely drawn, it also has games and puzzles for children at the back of each issue.

Scott Morse is a good shout as his stories tend to move quickly and include large panels. You don't want something too dense or over-loaded with dialogue.

Onipress has a few titles for little kids but they are printed in black and white which might not be that interesting for a child.
I've only read one issue of Courtney Cumrin but that was fun and has cool looking characters.
Polly and the Pirates was a fun all-ages read.
They also have a new book aimed for children called Salt Water Taffy which i'm tempted to get myself.
Banana Sunday is about a girl that takes her 3 monkeys to school, the twist being that the monkeys are dieties.

I would start her off with anything silver age Marvel or DC. Almost all of those stories will be age appropriate for a six year old because that's when they actually wrote comics for kids, you won't have to worry about price or trying to purchase entire story lines, and she'll be able to recognize the characters and might like it more because of that (as opposed to the more indie titles).

She'll probably definitely love Tiny Titans.

Owly and/or Bone.

Especially the early Fantastic Four stories where the Invisible Girl is worried that battling Doctor Doom could ruin her hairdo.

Collecting the first six issues of the amazing and bizarre story of a little girl and her monkey, who is crazy. There are ninjas! Evil Doctors! Pirates! Lesbians!
I rest my case in light of the one aforementioned stipulation.

Toonbooks.

Also, Boom! Studios is releasing an Incredibles comic book.

My son is 5 and I get him SuperFriends, Supergirl, Tiny Titans, Batman: Brave and the Bold, Scooby Doo, and Shazam from the Johnny DC line; ToonBooks; old collections of Superman and Batman from the 40's, 50's, and 60's; and Owly.

They're not in-your-face lesbians. They're the kind of lesbos that a 6 year old can handle.

Which is decent, but not as completely awesome as an Incredibles comic could potentially be. I reviewed it for Thor's Comic Column, but it doesn't seem to have materialized...

On the other hand, Boom!'s other comic this week, The Muppet Show, is superlative. Totally true to the show, in quality and imagination as well as characters and so on. And I'm not just saying that because it's written and drawn by a friend of mine.

But not the kind her Mormon father can. Which would be no kind.
