In a move that could wind up biting Apple (AAPL), the price of many hits on iTunes will rise 30 percent in less than two weeks. One former music executive called it a coming "PR nightmare" for the iPod maker.

In an economy where consumers are looking for lower, not higher, prices, Apple will attempt to break through the psychological barrier of the 99-cent per song price by moving the price to $1.29 on April 7 for hit singles and some classic tracks.

Time to use up that gift certificate that's been sitting on my desk for a year. Thanks for the heads-up.

Are the album prices going up accordingly?

This is why Rhapsody shits all over iTunes if you're a serious music fan who wants to listen to full albums before buying them. It's been a great investment since 2004.

You know, for a consumer group who's one click away from just stealing the shit for free... this is a bad, bad move.

How do they justify this?

90% market share.

They did say "Hit singles and some classic tracks", not everything across the board. Still a really bad idea. Like you said, piracy is just a couple of clicks away from iTunes.

And if they're going to do what I remember reading, they'll also be lowering the price on a bunch of stuff to 69 cents I believe.

If that's true, then it starts to make some sense. Raise the prices on the hot stuff that you know will sell, and lower the prices on things that aren't moving. I could actually get behind that.

I don't think the price increase will effect any of us. Judgeing by the "Songs/Albums that are Owning You" threads, I don't think many chewers are in the "Top 40" crowd.
