Is THE UNIT worth getting into?

I remember watching the first episode or two when it originally aired. I hadnt had my life changed forever by The Shield at that time, so I didnt know who Shawn Ryan was and why I should love him.

All I knew was that Pedro Cerrano / David Palmer was the star and that the T-1000 was in it. The first two episodes didnt blow me a away so I kinda let it slide.

Is it worth picking up one or more of the seasons and getting into it?

The Closer, The Unit is definitely worth watching. The series is the closest, television has to an old school action series, great military action, Stand out performances by Dennis Haysbert, as well as the rest of the cast. There are soap opera elements as a...forbidden romance, what the wives do, when their husbands are on missions as they are such a...Secret military force, they cannot even tell their families (outside of their wives that is) what they do and what their rank is. In addition to Shawn Ryan, the great...David Mamet is co creator of the series, and several of the people he works with on broadway appear in...The Unit as well. Ricky Jay appears as a shady C.I.A. Agent, while Mamet's wife or ex-wife, (I cannot remember which) Rebecca Pidgeon appears as a long lost love of the Robert Patrick the Commander of the Unit. RP is definitely more than she initially seems to be. I would definitely recommend that you...Enlist in...The Unit.

If my boy Ricky Jay is in there (as a CIA agent no less) Im definately picking up season 1 tomorrow.

I kinda wish I had asked this question yesterday and I may have picked it up today at Target instead of blind buying Body of Lies on Blu. Ridley best not let me down later this evening.

The Closer, Ricky Jay is not in Season 1. I think he was introduced in Season 2.

I noticed a 2-pack of The Unit S1 and Bochco's Over There S1 (complete series, that is), at Target the other day for about $26.

Even if it's sans Ricky Jay, I still gotta start at the top.

I love David Mamet and Ricky Jay, but I watched all of season one and wasn't too impressed, its a solid show but I also found it fairly routine and a little boring at times.

I've seen a few episodes over the past few years, and it's nothing special, but better than most of the CBS procedurals. And, Dennis Haysbert and Robert Patrick. I'll gladly watch it if there's nothing else on.

Season 2 and beyond is a marked improvement over Season 1. Less wifey-nonsense, more military badassery.

The show initially split the action between The Unit soldiers and their wives. The wives story's are not the greatest. Slowly overtime the wives roles have decreased - they're obviously still a huge part of the show. Now in the 4th season, the show has involved the wives storylines directly with The Unit itself. It's so much better now.

As For Ricky Jay, he doesn't appear in the show until the end of season two - his first episode he received a story credit! They wrapped up the storyline way too quickly, for my liking, so he's only in an early third season episode and he appears again in an episode this season. If you're going to buy the show do it because of the Shawn Ryan, David Mamet, Dennis Haysbert and Robert Patrick pedigree; not for Ricky Jay's 20 minutes of screen time - even though Ricky Jay is like totally awesome!

Cut out the bullshit wives story and the show is great.

I saw an interview with Dennis Haysbert once...he said if they dropped the wives storyline, they would end up with a variation of...The A-Team, which all involved didn't want.

Season 1 is ok, but the wife part is shit. Season 2 is great, but season is really really good. Too bad it might be cancelled...

Martin Savage, CBS usually decides whether or not to keep...The Unit on their upcoming schedule, after they greenlight everything else first. Every year I expect...The Unit to be cancelled, but I hope that I am wrong about it ending...again.

I saw a few episodes in the first season and this is why I could never get into it. Some of you are saying that they cut down on it though, so if I'm bored maybe I'll check it out one day...

season 1 was decent, some good stuff in there, but I was a bit letdown considering Mamet's involvement. Haven't had a chance to catch up with anything past season 1 though.

Have to agree with most of the sentiment here - the wives plots in the first Season are extremely annoying and because the mission scenes are so good it makes all the wife stuff really drag those earlier episodes down.

I thought the latter half of Season 2 really ramped up and then Season 3 was great.

I'd love to see them get rid of the squawking wives at home stuff altogether but it'll never happen.
