Metro Vancouver and BC Chewers

I decided that we need a BC thread here as there's quite a few of us and we need organising damn it!

I first want to say that I've lived here in Vancouver (from the UK) for a year and I love it here - just an incredible city. I live near the park cinema around Cambie and I love the movie scene here - especially the VIFF last year - I was a bit late to that party but I'm gonna be there every fucking day this year - I swear.

The Rio's saturday night shows need representing here on CHUD - also the Biltmore's Saturday Daytime movies. and of course the vancity and PACIFIC CINEMATHEQUE, both of which we should all be going to more often.

I also figure that if there's any interesting vancouver film-production news or screenings etc. this could be a good place to promote it or talk about it.

I'm also curious about which video-stores people use in Van, I'm a member in good standing at Black Dog on Cambie, I know there's another one on the drive and my friends swear by happy bats on main, but i've also checked out Grindhouse in kits and Videomatica by granville island.

So if any other Van-Chewers want to meet up for a movie or night out or just a tim hortons and a bitch about the relative merits of Kurasawa's later films, post here or PM me.

I live in Van and I'm all for a gathering at the Rio for a late night double bill sometime. I saw Eraserhead and El Topo there recently and it was awesome, it would be fun to do it with my fellow Chewers.

Also I tend to go to Independent Flixx on Denman for all my movie renting needs, good stuff.

Independent Flixx is a fair distance from your place, I guess you work in the west-end somewhere (or have occasion to go to stanley park regularly).

I missed the DOXA festival last year but I really want to make sure I get there this year. Does anyone fancy the warm up event April 16th.

Did anyone catch any good gigs at the Junofest? I saw excellent local boys Bend Sinister and not bad manitobans Inward Eye on Friday at the Bourbon and then we caught Maple Ridge's Run GMC at the Fairview. On saturday we tried the granville street thing but it was just shit, so we went to the biltmore on kingsway, catching montreal's beast (who were fantastic), you say party! we say die! who were fun and sex with strangers (who were very much up my street). I had my reservations but we really lucked out on the bands we saw.

I'm ashamed to say I've never gone to Stanley Park since I moved here in 06 for Van Film School. Anything ever going on up there?
Aside from being probably the most beautiful park in the country? Not really.
Right here.

As for your video store question, I'd check out Willow Video in Langley (they also have a somewhat lesser location in Abbotsford). Great prices on new/used blu-rays, dvds, etc... i.e. your typical NEW blu-ray will go for an average of $19.99 there... used anywhere from $9.99 - $19.99 (average $16.99) and a lot of them are new titles. Apart from that, I've found quite a few rare gems on their rather sizable used DVD rack.

So what gives with not having gone to Stanley Park yet??

Any chewers do any of the local hikes? Grouse Grind, The Chief, etc...?
Thought I'd pop my head in as you asked for BC chewers, I'm up in Kamloops. The Kamloops Film Festival was last month and is very small but does bring a variety of films here that would never come to theatre otherwise.

It is a ways away from me now, but I used to live a 5 minute walk away, plus I still have friends that live there so I visit the area quite often. I guess the closest funky video place to me is probably Blackdog on Commercial, I should really go there sometime.
Yeah, I know. I go by there on the bus all the time but I have yet to go in. I need to go to Videomatica too.

Black Dog is great, I love the one on Cambie - not been to the one on commercial but i imagine it's much the same, (get the midweek deal - any 3 old movies for a week - $10 cheap). I used to hate happy bats when it was in that cramped place at main and 15th, i couldn't find anything and the shelves were too close together, shit just piled everywhere - but now i have no excuses - the new store is beautiful. Bats are really good for non-region 1 stuff and for series sets of obscure tv shows.

The thing I love in these independent video stores is their filing rationale: director, theme, style, language so much more fun than "Action: A-D".

Domingo! Stanley Park is amazing, even if you just take a few hours to walk or bike the sea-wall now the weather is picking up you have no excuse. Or better still - go to the aquarium (incidentally I have a mate who works there so if you chewers want to get in free, give me a holler with a definite date) Call it a chewer discount.

I know that they filmed chunks of watchmen all around where I now live (Bloedel Conservatory and Nat Bailey) but does anyone know which bits were filmed where?

Also do people have friends in the movie/ TV industry here, I got a few mates working on Stargate: Universe but that's it.

Yeah, I work in TV and I went to film school here, I know a bunch.

And yes to Stanley Park, you HAVE to go or you don't really live in Vancouver. To be initiated into our city you need to have eaten sushi, gotten covered in rain while trying to get somewhere, and walked around Stanley Park.

Toshi is fantastic but there is always a line and it closes so fucking early plus, if there's more than 4 of you - forget it! I like Kishu Island down on broadway / main it's half price after 7pm, no lines, good donburi too, it's pretty basic but the cheapness, oh the cheapness. Also Tokyo john 18th and Cambie, very good.

I love the food around there, there's so much variety between broadway and king edward.

I've said this somewhere else but Stargate Universe has its studios about a block or two from my current place. Had no idea what it was.

Do you live near Gilmore Skytrain Station? My mate lives in the towers near there and walks the 2 blocks to the studios.

Yeah the lineup at Toshi's can suck but if there's only two of you it's usually not too bad.

Octopus' Garden on Cornwall is a little higher end but the food is AMAZING!!! It's great if you're trying to impress a date or are out for a special occasion.
half price sushi there is good, it's still fresh and the place is open till 11 or so. If there's 2 of you at Toshi, it's great choice especially if you can sit at the bar (It's less intimate date-wise but I love watching the guys at work).

I've not been to the Octopus' Garden, it's the one near nandos? I'll try it in the summer when we go down for the bard on the beach at vanier park. Or maybe this saturday when I'm at the russian centre for the eccw.com show. Or i might just go to nandos, haven't been there in ages.

I'm sure I do. Metrotown is just up Willingdon and the stations in Burnaby are all kind of peppered around me.

Ha, I work there.

Everytime I walk by a SGU sign I imagine they've resorted to making Stargate University or something completely inane.

No shit? Hey good for you man. Haven't heard from ya in a while.

Yaggers right across from Smile Cafe downtown? I used to go there all the damn time with my Vancouver Film School Class. GREAT food and good company. Better times.

Personal favorite, Malones. It's reasonably big, decent food, waitresses aren't really anything special... But damn. So many memories. It was my Central Perk.

Nope, malones is still there - Yaggers is a good place too, I cycle down pender everyday for work - i love the sign outside the smile cafe, always reminds me of:

Any chewers want to get together for a second round game for the canucks???
I went into Smile the other day with my buddy for old times sake. They have new management. You haven't lived until you've seen an old fat man in a suit yelling at an asian women who looks like she has Swine Flu...

SHIT DUDE. It took me a second to think of the sign you're thinking of. Some kind of cut out of an albino woman or something...
A little off topic, but the wife and I discovered the best Mexican place in the city. Don Guacamole's on Robson. Pretty busy, but the food was AMAZING.

For sushi if you like stuff a little different try the eatery. It can be a little too trendy, but the food is good.

that's it man, the sign with the specials on outside the smile - i think it was a display sign for Rio once upon a time because the sign she holds up is 12"x12".

bugger, i just made plans for cinquo de mayo at las margaritas on west 4th. I'll have to get over to try more places on robson - i've never been disappointed by a meal up there.

Dr. Doom has a conversation with Ben Grimm in what is very blatantly the Smile cafe in the original Fantastic Four movie.

That stretch of pender is always getting used for stuff, seems like there's always something happening just there.

has anyone seen the adverts for the Kahn-con event at the rio on the 16th?
It looks amazing, if only the rio website was kept up to date....

Does anyone plan on going to the Documentary film festival that starts this week? there's some pretty good looking films showing from the 22-31 May - could be a good warm up for the VIFF...
Appreciate the info Adam.

I read that in Variety. Good luck, man!

Best of luck Troy, you're living the dream. It's a shame though since I thought of conjuring up some Vancouver chewer get together for the summer (i.e. The Brother's Bloom?)

I look forward to the finished product.

Head up, the Pacific Cinematheque is holding an open house this Saturday starting at noon with a tour of the renovated theatre followed by a screening of Vertigo, which according to their site, is a new 35mm print.

Tickets go on sale noon on a first come first serve basis.

Your first thought it is going to be to touch them, Troy. Don't do it. Tom Cruise will kick your ass. He may be short, but he fights dirty.

anyone else going to the early show at the Rio on saturday???
Which show's that, Ghostbusters? Both the Rio and the Granville downtown are screening it, the difference being that the Rio usually screens a DVD while to my knowledge the Granville plays film prints.

Empire Granville screens it on the 26th I believe. I'm opting to go see the roadshow edition of CHE this Saturday at the Hollywood.

About seeing Che. Don't.

Movietickets.com lists Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 at the Granville on Friday (6:45) so I'm game.

Also, today, Orson Welles' "The Trial" at the VIFC, Rashomon's restored print coming to the Cinematheque in July with Easy Rider, the Big Sleep and Dr. Strangelove in August according to their site.

I still can't believe how much of an asshole Soderbergh is for making me sit there and watch his movies and enjoying myself for $2.50 a piece. $2.50! Scum.

I'm very up for Rashomon or Dr. Starangelove at the Cinematheque - anyone else fancy it?
Empire Granville is also screening Watchmen on Monday, July 20th at 9:30pm as part of the DVD release. I don't know if they'll be showing the Directors Cut or not. They're also showing ALIENS on the 31st.

They're also offering daily deals for the summer.
I wouldn't mind seeing Aliens on the big screen if anybody is up to it?
