Anyone else get this?

As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you've probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs.

As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan. The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 3 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $4 a month. The price of your 3 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $16.99 a month.

The new charge for Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after April 27, 2009 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details.
Awesome.

Sons of bitches!

I got the same message. Makes good sense. I seem to wait eons for Blu-rays to switch over from Short Wait.

Yeah, I got it, and I'm not thrilled at all about a 200% price hike for Blu-rays. (I get two movies at a time, and my Blu-ray fee went from $1 to $3.)

And while this -- "And as you've probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs" -- is true, Blu-ray prices are slowly but surely starting to drop.

I got that, but I have a 1-at-a-time plan and it's $2.
No, and I have the same plan. I'm guessing you order a lot more Blu-Rays?

~first world problems~

I'm 1-at-a-time and haven't gotten the message yet either. Maybe because I procrastinate so long in returning them? *crosses fingers*

Yeah, unfortunately. I bought a new TV and the justification for that was to actually use what it's capable of, so I stopped buying Blu-Rays and finally (way late to the party on that one) signed up for Netflix.

And I know that it's only $36 dollars a year, but if this is a "first world problem" then where do kids crying on airplanes and people with ironic t-shirts rank?

Flying is now no longer a first world thing. And donations of clothes to the poorest regions of the globe make ironic t-shirts a problem that cuts through all economic classes.

Damn it. I think I have to go with you on that one.

Want a higher price good? Pay a higher price. Otherwise, you'll have to spread the cost to everyone and why would I want to subsidize your Blu-Ray use?

Frankly, I wish they spent less time on Blu-Ray and more time beefing up instant view.

Me too. I don't really know if I want to spend the extra money on blu-ray, especially since I take forever to get through three discs at a time thanks to so much on instant view.

Now that it's linked with my 360 I completely agree. If I were Netflix I'd put the money from the Blu-Ray price increase towards the Instant View. But, I'm not Netflix so instead I'll complain about three extra dollars on an already nonessential item.

Are you saying that if a slumdog got internet access they could conceivably become the next dotcom millionaire by selling losing Super Bowl team shirts to hipsters?

Damn, I spoke too soon. The same email just showed up.

I would think you'd bitch more about cigarette prices going up than your dvds.
It says the Blu-Ray surcharge increases, but the price stays the same, right? Or am I all the way retarded? Because if I am right, then I couldn't possibly care less how the money is allocated.
It's not just an increase, its a huge increase for something that I thought was somewhat pricey to begin with.
$4 is Bullshit, so I cancelled the Blu option; like others have said, i wished they would increase the size and quality of their instant view....that is the future anyway!!!
Any word on when BBonline might try to pull this?

You do realize the price of Instant View is cheap because they don't have to pay extra for new releases? There's no way in hell studios are going to allow (hit) new releases to be viewed on a subscription basis.
If Netflix is going to justify this they sure as hell better beef up the number of BR disks they stock. New releases can be very hard to get on BR due to high demand. Charging me $3 more a month just so my (even relatively) new BR release request can be ignored is bullshit.

meh, I just canceled my account. This was just another reason.

Did the same thing. It was just the final bit that pushed my Netflix account past internal acceptable recurring monthly fee amount. I don't even feel like I watched that many Blu-rays but they bumped mine up to $3 a month.

The weirdness in how the price affected different people and the inability to specify how many movies Blu-rays at a time seems a little to opaque for me.
I did get the email last night. We use Watch It Now far too frequently to cancel Netflix, and the extra $1 isn't going to break me. But if it were any more expensive, I might just kill Blu-Ray access. Most of the movies I get aren't on Blu-Ray to begin with.
I just looked up my account summary on Netflix:

"Your plan is no longer offered

You currently have Blu-ray access on your plan for $1.00 a month. Blu-ray access on this plan is now $4.00 a month. If you select a new plan, you will not be able to return to this price."

Return to this price? I continue to be confused with the way they are wording things.

Instant view while nice, the best theater experience is on blu ray.

Online viewing the future? With bandwidth caps and slow speeds to begin with, how long is it going to take me to get a 1080p with DTS MA movie?

Disc based media will always be ahead of on demand media unless bandwidth can compensate. Digital downloads are the future, but we are no where close to that future.

Oh well PS3 is the best of both mediums, blu-ray and a hard drive for that future if it happens.
