My On Demand Future - Page 2

Come into the light. All are welcome.

Now that I've been without cable for several months, I can't believe that people are still paying these ridiculous prices for it. I think it's just one of those "this is how we've always done it" things. It took me a long time to talk my wife into it for pretty much that reason.

Why would you drag anything anywhere? It's called networking.

I was just talking about cable with my girlfriend earlier today. She lives without it at her place, and here I don't really watch it except for the Sci-Fi Channel and AMC. I have Time Warner, and I've got Road Runner high speed internet since there's a discount if I've got cable and high speed internet.

Whenever I get my own place, I'll probably get this same package. Basic cable and internet. No need for any of the premium channels as the shows I like to watch (Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm) I just wait to pick up on dvd.

Yeah, I've got an HDTV with a built in HD tuner. I get most of my local stations with a cheap antenna, but I'm missing FOX and PBS. There's an unused satellite dish on the roof to which I could attach an outdoor antenna, but I get tired just thinking about it. Also, it's a two story house and I don't like heights.

So my super ghetto set up cost as follows:
25 foot S-Video cable: $2 Amazon
25 foot stereo cable: $1 Amazon
Converter Box for iMac: $20 Mac Store
6 foot USB extension: $30 Best Buy

I think that's pretty good. If I had more money I'd go in for wireless stuff, and explore my HD or ED possibilities, but $53 isn't bad considering I'm going to be saving $60 plus a month. So far quality is about equal to a non-anamorphic DVD, which when it comes to TV and documentaries I'm fine with.

I am also weaning the family off of cable. We got the kids are watching hulu and we are considering a netflix subscription to finally cut all ties. I will miss the news broadcasts, but as Devin said in his article, I just can't justify the cost to watch one or two programs. And I think a week straight of Michael Jackson coverage pretty much sealed the deal for me.

I just found out my Netflix includes UNLIMITED streaming video. They don't have a huge selection, and I'm not about to watch most movies in streaming quality, but documentaries, tv shows and old b-movies are fine.

I went to the Hulu website through my PS3's browser, selected a program, and got an "incompatible" message. Am I doing something wrong?

I use PlayOn to watch Hulu through my PS3 on my tv. I think I've only used the browser for doing searches on Youtube (you can use PlayOn to play some favorites on Youtube, but can't actually search).

If I get a chance later, I'll try running Hulu straight through the PS3 browser and see if it works for me.

I've heard now that Hulu is blocked for PS3 users. There are ways around it, so google is your friend.

For money savings: dropping cable, dropping phone, dropping baby err getting external HD attenae, keeping internet, switching to skype or vonage (we'll be playing with both).

ironically i still buy blu ray

i might be switching internet, since comcasts 250 gb limit might be too small (streaming and downloading videos kills the space)

My experiment in dropping cable was a mixed bag, and I ended up sticking with Time Warner for everything for the time being. I tried a couple of different antennas with my TV (built in HD tuner), and could never reliably get more than 60%~70% of the local stations.

The highest speed DSL available in my area didn't get me HD quality or anything above two bars on Netflx via Xbox. With Road Runner turbo, I always get HD or four bars.

Also, my kids watch the free on demand pre school stuff on Time Warner quite a bit. Sesame Street on demand is pretty nice to have in a pinch.

So they pulled me back in. For now.

Newsflash (of sorts) for Hulu users: Both seasons of "Spaced" are now on Hulu.com.

Holy shit. I was just coming onto this thread right now to mention the same thing. I squealed like a little girl when I saw it. Good shit.

I know "free" isn't the real point of the article, but I couldn't help but think of this discussion after seeing this old TV ad...
