Why DRM doesn't work and movie studios suck a big fat cock

So, I bought The Matrix on Blu-Ray on Tuesday. I go to pull the digital copy off to my PC (the WMV version), and guess what? It won't take my code. So, I go to Warner Bros. "help" website to request a new code or get the activation for mine renewed, and there's a drop-down of discs for you to select your movie. And guess what? THE MATRIX ISN'T ON THE LIST!

Fuck you WB. Fuck you in your stupid asses. This is why DRM is a shitty idea. Because I could rip this thing with no problem with a free program. Oh, and another thing--I bought a copy of "Get Smart" for my son a few months back, and went to retrieve the digital copy so he could watch it on my PC if he wants. And they want like $5 to fucking download a digital copy of the movie. Let me get this straight--I bought the DVD and in order to get a digital copy of the movie I ALREADY OWN, I have to pay you to get it? Fuck that, and fuck you. Fuck all of you MPAA DRM-loving cocksucking studios. You know why people pirate? Because you won't let people that legitimately buy your merchandise use it however they want to. It's like buying a car and then only getting one key for it, and that key can't be used by anyone else in my family. You can get music DRM-free now, why can't I get my movies like that? Cock gobblers. I hope Cthulu rapes your family and makes you watch, then distributes the video DRM-free.

How's The Matrix look on Blu?

Or... wait like three days and it'll be fixed.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is, I've got digital copies from about every different studio, and I've had a different problem with every single one of them. None of them have worked right the first time.

Oh, and the movie looks really good on Blu for being 10 years old. You could literally move into Fishburne's craters on his face. That is the funny thing--with BR movies, I had definitely noticed actor's skin complexions a lot more. Because it's a lot more evident with the detail you can see now.

I am very content with the whole thing, growing pain glitches and all.

The concept is fine, but the execution--for me at least--has been severely lacking.

I have a media player that isn't made by Apple or Microsoft, but will play WMV files. When I copy a WMV file to it from a digital copy, it tells me it can't play the file because of some missing codec, and neither the media player manufacturer nor the studios can give me a good reason why it doesn't work, and that's aggravating. Once again, I can download a free program and make my own digital copy that works (but breaks the DRM), but they can't give me a copy that works out of the box.

Do you guys know if there's a free program out there that'll allow me to put my digital copy of STEP BROTHERS into itunes and by extension, my ipod? 'cause right now it's fucked, only playing in windows media player. LAME.

In my past experience, if you opted for the WMV version over the iPod version, you can't get the iPod version too. You can try e-mailing the studio from where you put in your authorization code and see if they'll send you a new one. I did this with The Incredible Hulk, and it wouldn't let me now download the iTunes version, and the opposite was true for The Dark Knight--downloaded from iTunes, but it wouldn't let me get a WMV version.

I actually received a new code from WB the next day which worked for The Matrix, which was a pleasant surprise.

But there's no ipod version, since Sony started doing itunes versions with PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, so looks like I am shit outta luck.

The question still stands - does anyone know of a good, free program that'll transfer the .wmv file into something more itunes friendly?

I'm no expert on itunes (or apple products), but SUPER is a great free video conversion program.

All DRM is good for is inconveniencing the end user. A casual search of any torrent site will give you a clear picture of its usefulness as a copy protection mechanism... indeed, if anything it encourages piracy by making the legitimate product more of a PITA to deal with than bootlegs are. Not wise.

I don't understand why if you own a Blu-ray copy of a movie, you'd want to watch it on a portable device.

Seriously?

Yes, digital copies make no sense to me because if I'm watching a film, I like the experience to be as immersive as possible, and if it's not a theater, then I'd rather watch it on my sizable television. A TV show, maybe I'd like portable.

So if I own a Blu-ray disc of a movie, I'd really have no need or desire to ever watch that film on a portable device? Do I really need to see every single pixel of SUPERBAD (random example) to chuckle at it on the bus on my way to work in the morning, or at the laundromat, or whatever? It's a lousy way to watch a movie for the first time, and if anything I'm more resistant to the concept of watching a movie on a portable device (by which I mean smaller than a laptop) than a lot of people I know... but I can certainly imagine situations where it's an option worth having.

I wouldn't watch bits of a movie on the bus. If I were a filmmaker, I wouldn't want you to, either. My fascist leanings aside, I know some people like it. Hope the kinks get ironed out for y'all.

As someone who travels a lot, I get it.

Next time I see you, you can have all my digital copies, if you want.

I use a free program called VisualHub on my Mac to convert things. Works great so far.
