Tired Ass Cover/Poster Designs

There may in fact be one before this, but to me this is the first time I saw this particular design (and it's far and away the best film that's utilized it so far):

While reading McWeeney's blog about the Roger Friedman thing, I noticed this little piece of design-thievery (granted, the design for the web ad was much more of a direct rip off due to more red being used):

There's also some really shit movie in Blockbuster that directly rips off the Eastern Promises cover. I'll look for it next time I'm in there. Walking around Blockbuster, I've seen quite a few movies that rip this design. Will this be the new "floating heads?"

Terrible.

Wasn't that stolen off of the Gomorrah poster?

Another example.

Does this one count?

Almost. The only reason I'm inclined to give it a pass is because of the spacing between "picture blocks." And, the movie's just so damned brilliant.

But you can't say it isn't taking cues.

But Cassandra's Dream is the absolute worst offender. It could confuse you into grabbing it if sitting right next to Eastern Promises.

I want to say that this particular design's orgin comes from this film:

Here's another example:

It's funny that you bring this up because this particular approach to cover design was actually on my mind.

Just got back from the videostore and saw a film that used this design before The Departed:

As a designer, I'd still rather see every one of those than another floating head poster, even if they're all derivative.

Goddamn Paramount, ripping off Eastern Promises like that.

All those posters have words.

rip-off.

As a consumer, I agree. They look half-respectable to be honest.

Plus that shot of Malkovich is hilarious.

I guess it's become the cliche poster/cover design for quirky crime films.

What a succession of terrific movies with horrendous, uninspired poster designs.

This is worse than floating heads in my opinion.

Which is not to say I "prefer" floating heads. But I'd rather just have a black background with the film's title centered than any of these designs.

Hiyoooooooooo.

It's not even that it's an unpleasant design. It's just that it gets repeated so fucking much. It seems like the lazy designer's go to move these days.

Not to derail here but this reminds me of how if I look at any issue of Alternative Press, every band in the magazine will feature one guy with the same haircut or all of the members of a band will have the same hair cut.

Font, colors, layout, etc. This is usually my go-to for OBVIOUS poster rip-offs:

I don't see how this is any better than floating heads.....It's just floating heads confined in boxes.

Many many boxes, and several of them even use the same font for the movie title!

I miss the days of hand painted posters. I know it's silly nostalgia, but do you guys think that will ever come back into vogue?

Ha ha, great examples. And beyond even that, they each incorporate an element I can't stand in posters.

In the one for THE SIEGE they juggle landmarks in a particularly well-known skyline so that all the recognizable ones are blocks from one another. Worse, in this particular design, they even jumble it from image to image. To me, this is the movie poster equivalent of a character with an office or apartment in Paris that just happens to have a view of the Eiffel Tower right out the big window. "Wait. That's the Eiffel Tower out there right? Well that must mean...Holy Shit! They're in Paris! Bruckheimer, you subtle bastard."

Albeit rather truncated, the APOCALYPSE WATCH one utilizes what I call 'The 12 Days of Christmas Approach'.
Ten Bombs...Eight Secret Agents...Five Seconds...Two Wires...One Set Of Clippers.

God I hate that shit.

Wow... I know The Siege was back in 98, but I know that Denzel Washington didn't look THAT young even then.

Right next to each other on the rack at Walmart...

700 700
