Well, about to start a new season in an hour here. Dear god, our pitching better not fail us again this year.

Here's the opening day lineup.

1. Curtis Granderson, CF
2. Placido Polanco, 2B
3. Magglio Ordonez, RF
4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
5. Carlos Guillen, DH
6. Gerald Laird, C
7. Brandon Inge, 3B
8. Adam Everett, SS
9. Josh Anderson, LF
Justin Verlander, P

So any other Jim 'Marlboro Man' Leyland fans?

Two games in and two losses to the Toronto BJ's. Justin Verlander fell apart at the start of game one, and in game two Edwin Jackson pitched 7 great perfect innings only to have Brandon Lyons give up the game in the last two. This was the only really eventful thing to happen otherwise.
Fucking bullpen. How can they afford to waste a gem like what Jackson pitched last night? I know that it is early, but I'm afraid that another very slow start will bring the wrecking balls to the roster. If that happens, I can see only Porchello, Perry, Cabrera and Granderson being untouchable.
What the Hell happened to Brandon Lyons?

He pitched really good for 3/4 of last season but he has been completely shot ever since.

I hope they have a good year as I have been a Leyland fan for years, even after he beat my Braves in 97.

Alright, a win. No 0-7 start for us this year.

Zach Miner got off to a shaky start but came through thanks to some help from Bobby Seay, Ryan Perry, and the ever sweaty Fernando Rodney.

Miguel Cabrera showed that he wasn't going to have a slow start like last year with a pair of home runs and Brandon Inge has set himself on pace for 160 home runs himself with one in all three games so far.

Tomorrow will see the debut of Rick Porcello who currently only has a little hype riding on him.

In the debuts of both Ricky Romero and Rick Porcello, Romero gets the win.

Well, this is starting to feel like last season, uggh.

15 runs against a Texas team that kicked Cleveland's ass. Maybe things will be different this year...

Nice to see Galarraga get off to such a good start after having such a good season last year. Now lets see if Verlander can win a game.

Great game, and now the Tigers are at .500. The pitching staff has been looking better and better.
Did Verlander remember what he's made of? Interestingly enough my sister and I are going through boxes of our late father's possessions and we found yearbooks form the 68 championship year, a 68 AL pennant, an 84 WS pennant and a 1968 Sports Illustrated commemorating Denny McLain's 30th win.

Welp, back to .500. If Miner hadn't fallen apart that would have been a game. Guess that ties us with everyone in central.

Today's 9-0 win over the White Sox puts us a half a game ahead of them in the Central standings.

How about Miguel Cabrera? Is it too early to start talking MVP?

Yes
Maybe, maybe not. Miggie can flat-out rake and he's hitting that way right now with no protection in the lineup. At the very least, I think that he'll keep the offense moving while we wait for Maggs, Guillen and Grandy to get hot.
Thread Starter
[sarcasm]Well, Miggs is no Dustin Pedroia[/sarcasm] but who knows?

This series against the Mariners has shown some really impressive pitching from both teams. Some real tight baseball games, I love it.

Tigers are 7-5, tying them with the White Sox and Royals for the top spot in the Central division.
I agree on the pitching and I think that Verlander is on the verge of figuring it out this year; he's one solid outing away from a four or five game win streak.

Porcello was impressive yesterday. Kid looks like he should be starting a JV double-header but carries himself like a six-year vet.

Here's a question, James: How long do Santiago and Anderson keep Everett and Guillen on the bench and in the DH slot, respectively?
Thread Starter
As clutch as Ramon Santiago has been, I think he should be starting and Anderson is making a solid case for the lead off position. But yeah, Verlander had exactly one bad inning, too bad it cost us the game. Its a long season and I really hope the kinks work themselves out because I'm really starting to like this team.
They're winning games in ways that Tigers teams of the past couldn't. That 2-0 gem from Jackson is exactly the game that they'd have lost in the previous few seasons. Hopefully they're catching the Angels at the right time and can also win this series.

Today's win over the KC Royals puts the Tigers alone at the top of the AL Central. Brandon Inge is unreal, and to think we almost got rid of him. Armando Galarraga continues to impress. Now on to the Yankees. Verlander vs. Sabathia is game 1.

Two great games from Justin Verlander in a row. Dare I dream?

Now we're half a game behind the KC Royals, hopefully we can keep the rest of central in the rearview.

Tonight starts a two game series against the Minnesota Twins. Time to start pounding down on those division rivals. Got two wins in on Cleveland in this 13 game division run.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but how about Anderson in the lead off position?

So far so good with the new lineup. Now the real test, the White Sox.
You can do all the tooting you want, sir. And Jeez, did you see Clete last night?

Porcello also looked really good last night...

If Magglio was doing more (like two years ago good), this team would be killing. We have a good lineup of good hitters, I pray they keep hitting. Glad to see Cabrera course correcting.
Seriously, the only thing that still scares me is the bullpen. I think that Leyland's got a good mix of patience in the lineup, and I think that moving Grandy down now that his power numbers are coming up was a genius move. If they can just take care of business within the Central, I think that they make the playoffs, no matter what they do outside of the division.

How painful was it to watch the Tigers just give up three winnable games? That said, Verlander looks great, Dontrelle Willis looks serviceable and our shortstop tandem is on fire.
Thread Starter
Tiger's on a 5 game win streak. One away from sweeping the Rangers. Dontrelle may very well be back (finger's crossed), Verlander is still going strong and Bonderman might be coming back soon. I like the way things are going lately.
Quietly hoping for things to keep on keepin' on. Most of the media is still saying that the Twins are going to win eventually while ignoring the Tigers... and that's just fine with me. For some reason, our teams do better when overshadowed by the "trendy picks". Maybe it's that Midwestern work ethic?

Well, it would be hard for me to argue with the Twins seeing as the Tigers can't seem to beat them. Our pitching staff is playing about as well I could hope for and the bats seem to be warming up. We just swept one of the hottest teams in baseball. All in all I'm liking the Tigers chances going forward.

Tigers sweep the Brewers. Thames is looking great, and Cabrera is hitting. With Maggs out of the lineup the Tigers have been on fire.

For those who care, Curtis Granderson is supposedly going to be involved in the TNA wrestling PPV tonight at the Palace.

ETA: Now that I checked the website I see Granderson will be presenting the x-division title to the winner of a King of the Mountain match.

Tigers sweep the Cubs, putting the Tigers 10 games over .500 and 5.5 games ahead of our nearest divisional rivals (the Twins). Armando Galarraga picks up his first win since April.

It was nice to see Galarraga pitch out of a bad first inning and get the win, Magglio stills looks so-so since his return. Hopefully this signals the return of Galarraga and a waking up of the Detriot bats. If Figaro continues to look as good as he did in his first start we should have a post season ready team.

Now it's off to Houston.

A reminder to any Tigers fans. Vote Brandon Inge/Shane Victorino by four pm eastern time today.
Two big home series coming up, one against the White Sox this weekend. The Tigers probably need to win both series to put a little bit of space between them and the rest of the central.

Last weekends sweep was especially disappointing due to the Tigers wasting great starts by both Verlander and Jackson. Might be time to break out Jobu to wake up the bats.

Whatever helps wake up the bats is fine with me.

I really hope Guillen comes back strong, god knows we're paying him enough.
Well the White Sox keep losing, that's a plus right? Oh wait, the twins keep winning.

Up until this point we haven't had a problem with the Rangers, why start now?
We went up against the powerhouse that is Jason Grilli?

Honestly, we have been worse on the road than someone in a Cormac McCarthy novel (ba dum chh). I just hope we can take care of the Indians, because I am starting to lose a little faith.

This team seems like it couldn't collect runs to save its life. I wish they could use these opportunities to build on a division lead for once.

I'm nervous about making any trades, but they need to do something.
Granderson, Polanco, Cabrera, Guillen, and Ordonez in a line-up should not be 11th in the AL in batting. I have no clue what is going on there, and I don't really want to trade any of them.

The pitching has been a hell of a lot better than I had thought it would be, and is pretty young, so I don't want to deal them.

Who should they trade?

The ever valuable pitching prospects of which we have an embarrassment of riches.

We need to get rid of Magglio before his contract extension kicks in. Guy has been unworthy of the money we're spending on him for two seasons and if his contract extension kicks in we'll be paying him more next season.

ETA: I kind of doubt they will make a move by Friday. While the Tigers might make the playoffs, they won't be doing much contending, as far as I can tell.
Did the Tigers score 13 runs last night, or was I THAT drunk? That was nice, and Cleveland is terrible, so fingers crossed.

What do you think of this James? http://blog.mlive.com/cutoffman/2009...d_for_ric.html

I'm not crazy about it mostly because I agree with you and don't think the Tigers are serious contenders this year. Although Verlander, Halladay, and Jackson wouldn't be the worst thing to have in the playoffs.
Thread Starter
With that trio, I think any hitting could take us to pennant contention. I don't want them to do it, though. The price tag is too steep. Those are three pitchers who could all be good to great future starters. Besides, pitching isn't one of the Tigers weaknesses. At this point we need another big bat who won't hurt us defensively.

Jarrod Washburn is a Tiger. Sounds like Luke French and a minor leaguer are being given up for him. Tigers now have a frighteningly good lineup of starting pitchers.
uh oh. Almost a must win tonight with Verlander starting.
We're gonna tie it up tonight.
Win the fucking game, please. This gets tied up tonight, the Twins will win the division. Gotta get the win. Arguably the most important start of Verlander's career.
I wish I could argue, but even if the Tigers win tonight, they won't beat Pavano tomorrow and Robertson starts on Thursday. The Tigers need to split these. I'm Scared. James,or Will, tell me everything will be alright.
Thread Starter
Jesus, I wish the Twins would lose a game or two. What are they like 19-1 in the last 20 games and that loss was to Zach Greinke. I'm not panicking yet because we still have Verlander coming up and Robertson has looked pretty good in his last start, iirc.

Well, considering I don't expect much from the Tigers in the post season (assuming they get there), this is the kind of excitement you would want from a big series and it is delivering.
This drama between the Tigers and the Twins has made for some pretty exciting games over the past month. Regardless of who eventually ends up on top, this has been alot of fun to watch.

From the perspective of a Yankee fan, that statement is hilarious.

One more win. One more win against the Twins and it's the post season for the Tigers.
