A little early, Diva.
no, it's cool. even though you can't technically win the division 'till the ALDS.

but i feel pretty alright about the wild card berth. worked out alright in '04 and '07
post #303 of 344
Ummm...that's been pretty much set in stone for over a month. Since they swept us last time.

See you in the post-season!

Savor the flavor. We all know Choke Season is coming right up.

As for me I'll be enjoying the Sox playing against the Indians on Thursday.

Well...not the grandest way to clinch the Wild Card spot but a) hell of a game (or hell of an 8th at least) and b) fuck yeah, we're in the playoffs! Bring on the Angels! That's always a fun series to watch.
exhale time! so ready for the playoffs to start, so thankful for sonny mclean's! dislike backing in like this, but ultimately it really doesn't matter
post #307 of 344
We're in and that's all that I care about, though I kinda was hoping that Thursday's game would have wound up being the clincher just so I could say I was there.
I am reminded of the 2000 Yankees, who lost 13 of 15 heading into the playoffs. We all know how that turned out...

Congrats, Sox. The marathon is over. It's time to kick some ass.
Youk or someone better get drilled tonight. Papelbon, you're a punk.

Well, one thing I can say is that the stars are back in alignment. And Tampa Bay is where it belongs! Man, that was weird last year. It was refreshing, but weird...
Watching the near comeback one Tuesday reminded me of the 04 and 07 playoffs. Not sure my heart can take it. Hell, in 04, I lost an entire month of my life..a total blur.

07..Melvin Mora bunting to beat the Yanks and watching the crowd at Fenway-magic

Im going to the last regular season game at Fenway on Sunday..should be fun.

For last night's beaning? Shit, how many Sox were drilled by Yanks this year?? Joba is just as bad.

Well, alright, I'll escalate this. I hope the entire Yankees' roster gets herpes.

In all seriousness I'd love Youk to get drilled and the run a pain train on the poor sap who beaned him. I've never seen a Sox fight in the flesh.

Is it bad that I was hoping that things would go so badly for the Sox that tonight would be the game that would clinch it for them?
It was a little cold last night but the crowds came out in force and we all stayed warm off of our collected body heat as the Sox shut out the Indians. Great time, great game.
OC said after the game tonight that it was the greatest game he's ever been a part of. Ouch to us.

I don't give a rat's ass about that white-trash headcase. What, the Sox don't pick on enough of the small-market teams? Not enough to hire the Pirates to be your farm system? Gotta plunk Blue Jays now?

I love how you rail on a really good ballplayer. Someone who's actually done something (quite a lot, actually) in baseball. Meanwhile, that fat toad Joba gets treated like a baby because he can hit Youk in the head and pump his fist after getting an out in the 5th inning. Against the Indians.

And the Pirates comment is priceless. Xavier Nady, Damaso Marte, and Eric Hinske say hello.

ETA: And seriously, you already forgot this???

Benches clear as New York Yankees brawl with Toronto Blue Jays

Hah, well he's just caught up in the moment. It was a tremendous game and he was a big reason why the Twins won. '04 was a long time ago.
haha yea i know, he was great. it was more a commentary on myself that i went 'but, but what about game 5??' like i'd just been slapped in the face. i cop to how pitiful that is.

and Subotai, don't be thick. everything you said was stupid.
I love how the Yankees (and their fans) think they can go head hunting without expecting retribution. What the fuck?

Twins game was great last night. I want them to carry that fire to beat the shit out of the Yankees.

Tonight!!! Lester takes the mound against John Lackey and once again, I will be unable to see the entire game at the bar because LA insists upon getting to the series, where all the games start at 9 and end at 2 in the god damned morning.

The Angels are going to run the shit out the bases and, hopefully, jam themselves up (hello game 4!) like they did last year. Hopefully V-Mart can step it up tonight and contain, but it'd be really nice if Lester circumvents that and just doesn't let them on base to begin with.

So sick of 9:30 start times. Stupid 3 hour difference...

GO SOX!
The nervousness and excitement is really starting to set in. All of those games, and now here we are. First to 3 wins, loser goes home. Harsh!

Anyway, like you said, the key is to keep them off of the bases (no matter who the opponent is...hell, the slow-as-hell Yanks set base-stealing records against us). Let's hope the bats come alive tonight to keep the pressure on Lackey and co.
Any special plans for tonight? I don't have to work tomorrow so I feel like going to the bar and getting drunk. But I'm broke. Can't wait. I think we're pretty evenly matched with the Angels so it should be a tough series. Go Sox!

Debating going to the local Sox bar tonight, because I'm going tomorrow night with a buddy of mine (who I only seem to see during the playoffs...). But, there will be much drinking whether I'm at a bar or at home. Find me a nice Sam Adams Octoberfest, throw on the cap and yell at the screen. Sounds like a hell of a night!
I'm heading over to my buddy's house. We've been Sox buddies since just after the '03 ALCS. We've had an amazing run since we've been friends. In fact, so many amazing things have happened between the two of us, regarding the Sox, since then that I should write a book. An incident in Spring Training of '04 and the whole '07 post-season are two examples.

Anyway, I'm throwing as much positive mojo towards the Sox as I can tonight. The Angels have to be pissed and they do have a great team. As much as it pains me to have to play them every year, I honestly think it helps the winner. We'll see.

Everyone have fun and be safe tonight!
Terrible fucking calls this game. Not only from behind the plate, but the infield. Get some fucking glasses, refs.

Hey! What did I just say about not letting guys on base?! What did I just say? Actually, with the exception of that home run, Lester was good last night, not great, but fuck man, Lackey was better. I'm sure Angels fans have said this after the last three series, but can we get 7 games?!

Stymied offense, I hope we can split it tonight and carry us back to Fenway evened out.
No stolen bases! Yay!

Seriously, I give mad props to Lackey for pitching his ass off, and to Hunter for hitting the cover off of that ball.

On the other hand, the first-base ump needs to be fired. Seriously. This was the worst call I can ever remember seeing. Not hyperbole. I cannot remember a worse call than this:

Can anyone else??? The worst part was this was the SECOND obvious call that the douche at first missed (although not as obvious as the one above).

These calls ultimately didn't make the difference in the game, but they did give Lester 2 of his 3 four-out innings (the first being on that bullshit non-strike call from the home plate ump. Ugh, he was real shitty too).

Nothing went the Sox way last night. Not a thing. It happens, we can only hope they bounce back tonight.
IIRC that ump is notorious for bad calls.

I had no idea. What's interesting is there were a few bang-bang plays at first and he got them ALL correct.

Even after these blown calls, I still struggle with the thought of replay. I'd love to have these calls made right, but it it a part of the game. I'd actually be more interesting in some sort of retribution. Like, if you blow two calls so bad (like dude did last night), you don't get to work the post-season anymore. Seems more than fair.

Also, I LOVE the on-screen pitch tracker. I never thought we'd ever see that! That's something I'd kill for each game of the regular season too.
After digging a little, I found that CB Bucknor (shocker at his name) was voted MLB's worst ump in 2003 and 2006.

Wasn't really close either year. That helps explain a lot.
It may work out the best for the Sox. They didn't lose due to any of those calls, but the umps may be more inclined to be careful and/or see the calls go the other way.
fuckin' a.
Fastball. Fastball. Fastball. Fastball. Fastball. Fastball. Fastball.

I'm Jonathan Papelbon, dammit! You can't hit my fastball!

What a douche. 5 runs, got 3 outs. Atrocious. Daniel Bard cannot take the closing job fast enough.
way to blow the entire fucking game all by yourself papelbon. fucking garbage.
Way to go out with a whimper, Boston. Crazy thinking this team won 95 games after watching the last 3 shitfests. Oh well, thanks for the memories and they made the playoffs yet again. That's all you can axe for.

Good job, Angels. You finally exorcised your Red Sox demons. Now I can't wait for you to piss your pants and forget how to play baseball in the ALCS against the Yanks. Have fun with that.

Papelbon! What the shit? margh...

Well, good job Angels, way to get that monkey off your back. Now go beat the shit out of the Yankees!
are we positive that there has to be a winner in the ALCS?
Papelbon just cost himself 3 million dollars.

One strike, Jon. That's all that you needed to get.

I'm sure there's some blame to go around elsewhere, but Papelbon is going to take a beating for some time after his performance last night. Jesus.

I'm happy for the Angels, at least; I can stand losing to them.
it's pretty clear that we weren't good enough to be able to win it all, but to lose that game all on his own like that, a game that was in the bag, is indefensible and solely on papelbon. what a chucklehead.

and maybe it's just being out here now, but i hate hate hate the angels. it adds to the sting of this series.
Well Red Sox PR did tempt fate with the whole Dave Henderson throwing out the first pitch and recreating his spin. It was time for a Boston closer to blow it for his team.

Donnie Moore and Angels' fans everywhere are happy to see the Red Sox on the golf range for the rest of the playoffs. Just keep an eye on Papelbon after all this; no sharp objects or weapons allowed.
Wow.

Now that's some food for thought.
well what do you guys think? time for some (a lot of?) fresh blood?
