The Blob - Greatest anti-global warming warning of all time?

Just saw the Steve McQueen classic for the first time, and I gotta say, if I was ever cutting together a Joe Dante-esque Movie Orgy at this time the denouement would cynically have to go in there somewhere.

Lieutenant Dave: At least we've got it stopped.
Steve Andrews: Yeah, as long as the Arctic stays cold.

Of course, who in their right minds pre-1970s could have ever possibly imagined the polar ice caps melting? That ending made me laugh louder and more sadly than I ever have before. It's just heartrending, really.

And let's not forget that Godzilla was trapped in an Arctic glacier at the end of Godzilla Raids Again, only to re-appear and trash Tokyo numerous times.

The cause? Global warming

And yet, global warming may clear the earth of the scourge that is Abominable Snowmen, so glass is half full, gentlemen.

Well they did end it with a big fat question mark. Maybe they knew something.

I'm a bad person, not only haven't I seen this - but I didn't know it had McQueen in either (many remakes as well it seems).

It's on my Lovefilm queue with high priority. Cheers.

The Blob is one of my favorite old horror movies (along with The Thing From Another World). Interestingly enough, there's an opportunity for a tie-in...The Thing is discovered in the same general area as they left the Blob. Once the Thing is defrosted and kills all around him, he then finds the Blob and transports it out of the cold to use as a weapon against mankind. But as the Blob becomes bigger and ever harder to control, the main battle becomes The Thing vs. The Blob. "Whoever wins, Mankind Loses"

So as the polar ice caps melt, not only will we be saddled with Rising oceans, and dramatic climactic changes, but we will also have to deal with the THING, the BLOB and GODZILLA all at the same time?

We are so boned.......

and Gamera... and the Rhedosaurus... and some Aliens and Predators... and Lovecraftian creatures (though that is Antarctica I think, as is Carpenter's Thing). Our polar regions are absolutely riddled with monstrosities. Seems like explorers and researchers can't take a step without bumping into something horrible. And if Day After Tomorrow is to be believed we'll be attacked by global warming itself as well. We're totally FUCKED.

be sure not to miss "Beware! The Blob," the 1969 stoners delight sequel directed by Larry "wanna get high" Hagman, featuring Dick Van Patten, Burgess Meredith, Shirley (not Laverne), and other 70s ensemble mainstays. You can watch it for free on youtube these days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZUYo...e=channel_page

Funny. The night before your post, I'd just watched the '58 Blob on YouTube for the first time in like... decades. If the only good DVD available wasn't the super-expensive Criterion, I might have seen it again sooner. Now, I might have to pick it up. Not because it's a good Blob movie, but it has gotten so dated that it's become close to some kind of David Lynch 50s nightmare satire.

I know it's supposed to be stupid, but the 70s Blob movie scared the crap out of me as a kid. The humor and general awfulness of it flew right over my little head. The poor wheelchair-bound guy, left helpless on the bowling alley floor and waving a crucifix in vain at His Royal Blobness, really did a number on me. Gotta watch that again.

All hail the 80s Blob. Russell and Darabont defied the shitty remake odds and made the All-American Monster Movie.

Mind = Blown. BLOWN!

But if the thing attacked the Blob, would it take over the Blob, and fight mankind with its abilities, or get eaten?

And, let's not forget that at the end of the book, Frankenstein's monster ends up in the Arctic as well.
