Recommendations for mature reader?

Thread Starter
I'm 35, and I've been reading comics on/off since I was a kid, although I havent read much since the late 90s. I feel like picking it up again after revisiting my Watchmen memories.

Are there any must-read graphic novels or series that I can try? I've read Sandman, most of Warren Ellis's work, and intend to buy Y the Last Man soon. (I'm a big fan of LOST). Is Civil War any good?

For superhero stuff, I can't recommend James Robinson's run on Starman enough. Ex Machina is really good, as well.

Scott Pilgrim gets a lot of love around these parts, and deservedly so. Also, check out Charles Burns' Black Hole, and anything by Doug Tenaple.

Try Ed Brubaker's Captain America omnibus.

I'd pass on Civil War, and most of the epic events, but opinions vary.

I'd check out Joe Casey's Rock Bottom and Codeflesh.

Richard Starkings' Elephantmen.

Garth Ennis' War Stories.

Currently, if i could only read one title a month i would go with Joe Hill's Locke and Key, i couldn't level a single criticism at it. There's a trade that collects the first arc and we're three issues into the second so there's isn't a huge backlog to catch up on.

Ennis's War Stories is definitely a must as is Jason Aarons The Other side, a great vietnam story. Anything by Aaron is worth checking as he only burst onto the scene a few years back and is a great storyteller.

Brian Wood's Locals and Demo. Two trades that collect quasi-linked one-shots. The former follows various key points in a womans life and the latter is about kids dealing with powers.

And for capes, the thread about current quality superhero comics is worth a gander.

Brubaker's CRIMINAL is excellent throughout.

Some of the Jodorowsky, Moebius or Bilal stuff published bu Humanoids or other studios should be worth a look, specially if you want to dive into the crazy awesomeness that's european mature comics (Jodo's "Metabarons" is the closest you'll get to his vision for Dune); if you wanna give it a shot at reading non english comics, Hugo Pratt's "Corto Maltese" and Sclavi's "Dylan Dog" are worth the italian lessons.
Robinson's "Starman" is one of the greatest superhero comics's ever written and should get a lot of credit for reinventing the genre (also check his mini series "The Golden Age", along with Cooke's "The New Frontier").
English stuff that should get some mentions: Morrison's "The Invisibles", "We3" and "Arkham Asylum", all of Ennis's work on "Punisher Max", Warren Ellis's "Planetary" "Transmetropolitan" and "Fell", Chaykin's "American Flagg!" was collected again i think.

I recommend Ed Brubraker's Sleeper over is Captain America run. Much, much better writing and a lot more mature.

Try 100 Bullets if you haven't or Stray Bullets.

I always pimp Love and Rockets and Concrete in threads like this. Recommend 'Chester Square' from the former, and 'Fragile Creature' from the latter.

I would suggest reading a book without pictures but if you must read a comic book read Criminal. If you claim to love comics but haven't read Criminal then you are a stupid piece of shit.

Also check out Maus and Bone, both are phenomenal.

I just got into Gotham Central, and I'm digging it so far. It has about the same tone as The Dark Knight, but with more of a procedural approach told from the viewpoint of the Gotham Police Department. Pretty good stuff, even if the some of the superhero element might cause me to roll my eyes at times.

DMZ by Brian Wood.

There's some good comics out there. Some are mature in the sense that they are unsuitable for kids and others are really great for all ages.

In these sort of threads I tend to mention writers I like rather than titles.

Look for:
Alan Moore
Brian K Vaughn
Grant Morrison
Mike Mignola (personal fav, maybe not for everyone)

You are simply outrageous. Outrageous, I say!

The Originals is a cool retro sci fi book from Dave Gibbons, and for superhero books check out Kingdom Come which is painted by Alex Ross, it looks amazing. And the first volume of Rising Stars is awesome.

In no particular order:

Strangers in Paradise - Terry Moore

Acme Novelty Library - Chris Ware (includes Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth - I have a trade paperback of just this set of stories and that made me cry bythe end of it)

Planetary - Warren Ellis

Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi (also a movie!)

Ghost World - Daniel Clowes (also a movie!)

Laika - Nick Abadzis (this one had me in tears also - it's the story of this dog)
