Detroit to lose a quarter of public schools

Wow. That's a lot of schools to close and personnel to fire/relocate. Aren't kids going to have to be bused (never popular) all over the city?

Considering that essentially, all of the supermarkets have fled -- although apparently Walmart opened some grocery divisions to replace them -- what's next? Gas stations? Fire Departments?

How long before someone makes an OCP stepping in to develop Delta City joke?

That sucks though. Transferring kids is going to make the burden on the schools that have to take them even bigger. Nobody wins in that situation. It seems like a downward spiral with things just getting worse and worse. I suppose there is an opportunity to open up grocery divisions, but as the only suppliers, they can gouge the fuck out of people.

I once taught at a Catholic school which absorbed hundreds of kids whose schools were closed as a cost-cutting exercise.

There were kids arriving at school from as far as thirty miles away. We had to open the canteen up in the morning so some of them could have a breakfast.

Am I right in assuming that Detroit is now resembling the poorer sections of New Orleans . . . only minus Katrina?

I actually took a day during my recent trip to the USA to have a look at Detroit... you know, in a kind of Mad Max sense, its awesome

Seriously Detroit is more like D.C. in Fallout 3, or Manhattan in I am Legend in some places.
Didnt someone have a link to a huuuuuge collection of pictures of buildings in Detroit?

Haven't been to Detroit in around 5 years, but back in my Umich days we used to make trips there often. And even back then it was really run down, with vast sections of the city composed of crumbling abandoned buildings. But its still a really cool city, just not to live in.

Sociologists better be on this. What is happening in Detroit seems to me like a researcher's wet dream.

It's no joke, I live in Michigan and I went to a Red Wings game at the Joe this year. I was never so relieved in my life to reach the highway after the game. That city is becoming a wasteland. I don't see how it ever comes back to be honest. It is seriously one fucking scary place to be after dark.

How America these days seems to be fine with major cities like Detroit and New Orleans simply withering and dying seems quite jaw dropping to me.

Now you guys really are the new Rome, just the later years.

If somebody has this, please post it. I've never been to Detroit, would love to see what it looks like (without having to actually go there).

No Delta City joke here...I'll be classier and nerdier and say that Detroit has pretty much become Snowtown from Warren Ellis's "Fell" comic...those familiar with it know how fucked that statement is.

I honestly don't think Americans will be all that upset if/when New Orleans is swallowed up by the sea. Nearly happened four years ago, and the city is still a decaying piece of shit (besides Downtown and the Garden District, of course.)

Anyway, New Orleans wasn't ruined by Katrina; New Orleans was ruined when it had to become a T-Shirt Emporium in order to survive.

Although I must say, NOLA isn't nearly as bad as Detroit as described here. All of the schools are Catholic or charter now, but there are grocery stores besides Wal-Mart and the tourism industry is thriving, even if it robbed the city of its soul. It's fine if you don't go anywhere near the poor sections of the city...
