One word ladies and gentlemen....NITROs. There was nothing like winning after NITROing your way through 2 full laps at madcap speed.

And I can't believe no one has mentioned 720 - Skate or Die! yet. What a great cabinet that appeared near the end of the classic arcade era. That game was a bitch on the advanced levels.

One reason arcades are dead is cost. The later cabinets costs thousands upon thousands of dollars. My boss in college bought 4 linked Daytona machines for his bar and the cost was around $20k. And the things always break down from abuse. Arcade games are played by either kids or drunk adults so they're always being destroyed.

Another quarter hog: 'Quartet'. This was a side scroller with up to 4 players.

I wonder how many of us did this?
For the longest time, I used BUG as my initials, out of Micronauts respect (my brother was ICE, after the X-Man). But if a game pissed me off, I'd put FUQ (Fuh + 'Q').

As for memories, I have too many to remember. My most vivid memories were a Gaunlet machine with 2000 health per quarter, and a Joust machine (right after it came out) with a free man every 4000 points.

At our local fair, we even found a Space Invaders game that had the top panel with the control buttons on it was loose, and we lifted it off. We could reach our arm down into the game and take the quarters out of the little cash box. Another thing we did, my friend had smashed nickels with a sledge hammer into the size of quarters, and took them to the local pizza place. Sometimes they would work. We even played a game of Missle Command with a smashed penny!

At my local Sega Center, they installed a headphone jack in certain games. You could borrow the headphones, and have personal sound delivered right to your ears! Donkey Kong was a joyous event with these on.

Did anyone here ever buy a game from someone who had racked up a huge number of ships on Asteroids? I think I did once for a dollar.

I played a lot of Final Fight, Street Fighter 2, Captain America and the Avengers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the arcade game, Punch Out, Double Dragon, House of the Dead, Virtua Fighter, Galaga, Aliens, After Burner....and Revolution X. I was obsessed with Aerosmith at the time, and somehow convinced myself that it was a good game.
