FantAsia + Undead = One heck of a night!

Hey gang, I figured I'd just do a little report from FantAsia. (yeah, it's a slow work day, sue me.)

We got there, my crew and I, around 8. I had already eargerly purchased our ticks for Undead, after of course reading about it time and again right here on the boards and on the Corner page.

So my favorite summer festival's back, opening up with a killer showing, needless to say I'm pretty jazzed. The seating line-up literally wrapped around the campus grounds (Fantasia being hosted this year at a local university), and people were
lined up since 7:30. So we got in line, and of course waited for close to an hour and a half. (the only drawback of going to a Fantasia screening - LINE UPS!) Of course a Sci-Fi-Asian-Horror-Anime-Independant and Short Film festival's bound to attract a few, well - odd characters. (by the way I thought I might've spotted Butane there. If so sorry I missed ya chap.) So after a bit of people watching we
finally got into the theatre, which I gotta say for a student auditorium was pretty top notch. The sound was great, picture was great, the room was great but the
seats however... eh. Place held around 720 people, and it was packed, maybe a
dozen seats shy of a sell-out, which probably still counts as one. After the obligatory shout-out to the "Sponsors", we were off.

Now to anyone whose ever been to this Fest, you know how hot the crowd is. Perfect venue for films like these... after a few teasers and the usual "making funny hand signals with the projector stuff" - the film started.

GOD DAMN. I simply adored this movie - beautiful, funny, intense, gory as all heck and just classic. So many of the kills in there DESERVE top spots in the Top 100 kills list. I'll spare yuou all any spoilers, but god damn I had a blast. Instant classic. Great experience. I've still got around 10 films on my hit list this time around, but this was by far the best time I've had at one of these things (the sneak
preview of 28 Days later comming in at a close second) - so if the first film is any indication - I urge each and everyone of you to get your asses up here if possible and experience it for yourselves.

Post-flick pints are on me!

I gotta give props and thanks to the orginisers of FantAsia, and to the Chud/Corner boys for turning me on to so manygreat flicks, stuff I wouldn't of necessarily checked out before hand over these past couple of years. Good times baby, good times.

I'll get to see UNDEAD saturday at 17:00, so I hope my level of enthusiasm will be as high as yours after the screening!!!!

I've seen Cabin Fever tonight thought, and I must say I've been really disappointed.

The reasons?

***SPOILER ALERT***

1. Expectations : I thought it was a drama. Hell no! How could I know it was a SPLATTER COMEDY?

2. Characters : Why do american movies always feature dumb young people? Shouldn't you be offended or something or is it a reality in the US? And why are the hillybillys always stronger and evil than the characters themselves (in Cabin Fever, but also in House of 1,000 Corpse, in Wendigo, in Redneck Zombies and in countless other recent movies)? Are you scared of these people? Time for a clean-up or something! wink

3. Confusing story : Things happen without any reason, characters act like the worst idiots I ever saw (classic eighties movies had a few dumb characters, but never as much as these...) and the fever seems to be like a normal thing to the county's inhabitants. Furthermore, a lot of things happen only for... fun.

The thing is, I love good scenarios. And this isn't one. It's a good joke. But I wasn't prepared for that, as I expected another 28 Days Later or something... my expectations be damned.

Anyway, the crowd was into the damn movie and I could say it was fun, in the festival context. Furthermore, Cabin Fever fitted with Mitch Davis's personal tastes (famed FantAsia programmer) - Thrash, Comedy and Gross graphic horror -, so I understand why he chose the movie.

It could be a blast in american theaters this fall.

Outside America however... damn, if I lived over your place, I wouldn't be proud of this movie... it shows the worst of the US, and only the worst... rednecks, guns, drunkedness, blind violence, terrible decisions and dumb teenagers.

If I had to rely on movies to choose a new country to live in, I would get in a plane to England without hesitation.

Sorry.

Pho, most of the gory scenes were treated in an outrageously sadistic yet "funny" way. You where there, weren't you when...

***SPOILER ALERT***

...the sex-crazed girl (not the virginal one) was shaving in the bathtub... SHE WAS CRYING FOR GOD'S SAKE AND EVERYONE IN THE ROOM WAS LAUGHING!!!! I mean, the scene is supposed to be dramatic, but somehow it manages not to be... and the ending... damn, don't go telling people it's an hommage or something, I never saw in any other film such a shamefully "comic" and unecessary film closure.

***END OF SPOILER AREA***

I mean, the characters are so over-the-top they become ridiculous and, somewhat, funny. Their actions don't make any sense. The surrounding inhabitants are worse. They're totally pathetic, bent on being one-dimensional comic figures. Compare with any Friday the 13th, any Halloween, any TCM up to number III and you'll realize that Cabin Fever is a satire... and a heck of sadistic one above that!

To me, Splatter Comedy is that : tons of jokes (there are so many jokes or funny parts in this movie, you can't deny that), exaggerated gore, unbelievable characters and a weak scenario.

And, yes, I feel Friday The 13th I to IV are believable.

Cabin Fever is more like a park ride. It's pure horror/comedy gold for those seeking thrills instead of brains... but I love zombies, so I love brains better...

I didn't say Cabin Fever wasn't fun though, just... disappointing. It won't be in my collection, thus.

Sorry, that doesn't change the fact that it still is a "splatter comedy".

***SPOILERS***

Had it chosen a more serious ending though, more serious police officers and some characters with at least a brain, I might have not said so.

***END OF SPOILERS***

As for the hommage trend... well, I am personnally a bit tired of let's-recall-the-past-again Post-modern movies... Undead was one, House of 1,000 Corpses was one too, and then Cabin Fever too.

Why God, why?

I hope May is as good as people say, as really I need more great and believable (not real, just believable) dramatic horror this year.
