Will Mix Sound For Food

Well, not quite. But willing to work for cheap.

I am taking the next year or two off from the hectic schedule I kept up for the last five. As such I sold back my partnership in the post house I was with and have paid off a crap load of debt with the proceeds. I also kept all my home gear including over 100 Gigs of FX.

I plan on spending most of that time looking after my 1 year old but realize that I can't stay away from the industry lest my skills get rusty. So, I am offering my services as a sound effects editor/mixer for bargain basement prices to any of the filmmakers on the CHUD boards. PM me if you want a price quote.

Any price quote would include effects work, backgrounds and final mix. I don't do ADR unless you're willing to fly me to a studio near your actors. ISDN is crazy expensive for a guy like me. I am able to do some foley but it wouldn't be anything more then some footsteps and a cloth track.

Check out the demo reel in my sig. Or my IMDB page if you want to see the bigger shows I've worked on.

Thanks all!

I knew you couldn't just walk away. We are all addicts.

Yeah. It's impossible. I've been a stay at home dad for a week and a half and I'm already getting itchy to work on something. Maybe this way I can do both.

I have been off for a week and was ready to go back on Monday. So sad.

I might have something for you Ryan--PM sent (well, it's being written now, but it'll be there in a bit).

What's worse is that the older I get the more I create. It used to be limited to writing, then it was music, then it was sound design, then it was photography and now it's all of them.

When I read the thread title I did kinda fear the worst - i'm glad you're working for cheap because you love doing it - not because you're struggling. Good luck.

I'm currently working for free, on a project I hate - just to keep myself tuned in the quiet months.

I think i'll take up photography soon, it's a natural progression from video and it doesn't require quite the time commitment (even if it ends up taking up just as much).

Pm sent, good sir.

I'm actually going to school for audio engineering, and I was wondering on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is it to get work doing post-production sound?

It's about an eight if you don't know anyone and about a two if you do know someone. One of my best friends from University was the lead mixer on a popular show up here in Canada and he hired me on out of film school to do effects. He knew I was a hard worker and had good ears so it was just a matter of learning his work flow.

It's worth the effort to get a career going, though. I've been doing it for five years now and have had an absolute blast. It's far less late hours then editing, more drinking then being a PA and far more relaxed then being a director.

That's good know, it's something I've thinking about going into lately. Though the plan right now is to do live sound for a while and move on from there.

Sorry to hear that. The first cut is a really good film. What showed up at the theatres really wasn't. But the sound is gorgeous...

Might have something for you in the Fall, Ryan! I'll keep you posted.

I finally got around to uploading some of the photos I took from the recording studio my audio class recorded at a while back. I figured this was the best place to post these.

Thanks Bub, reminded that I've been meaning to make these two threads:

The would-be sound designers thread

The Motion Picture Sound Discussion Thread

...for some time now (at least since the Stone interview).

Hey, do you have me on ignore or something? I really need an answer to my last couple PMs. Sorry to be confrontational but, like, I am.

Nope but I haven't received an PMs. Send again.

Hmm....strange. All they boiled down to was if you hadn't started on the scene you were helping me with, you can push it off essentially indefinitely as plans have changed and it seems you're busy now, too (and that the OMFs are wonky).

I was also apologizing for getting worked up over that Paramount nonsense. It's a long story but, as one might easily infer from my overreaction, an enormously unpleasant one.

Let me know when you need it. I was going to start on it last week but I'm rearranging my studio space to store stuff for my old partners (speaking of long stories).

That's not an iso booth.

Here's the iso booth. We got a really great sound from the drums in it.

See, I'd call that an iso booth. Three sides plus all the acoustic paneling should give you enough dampening to make it act like an iso. A little roomy but that's not a bad thing.

The drums on the other hand look very cool.

ETA: Crap, didn't see the second pic. I assumed the Vox came out because it was just being stored there. Nice set up.

I won't need it for a couple months. The video workflow is molasses. You know your workflow has problems when a seven-minute short consumes like 3-4 terabytes of storage.

The other possibility is (since the run time is so short and the ADR so...in desperate need of EQ and reverb) if you'd be interested in helping on more of it, I could get some money together. But I need to see where things are two months from now.

So don't sweat it--unless like you find an unanticipated chunk of free time--until then. And thanks again for the help.

The drums came out really good sounding, you can't go wrong with a couple of 421's.

It's a great studio - it's got a nice wood room, great mic selection (we ended up using a U47 on some egg shakers for the hell of it), and that board is just awesome to use.
