Record Store Day 4/18/09 at Criminal Records

Check recordstoreday.com for way too much info. As for Criminal, from the newsletter:

Oh my goodness, Record Store Day is almost upon us! If you didn't already know, our biggest party of the year is THIS Saturday, April 18th. We're going to have live music (11 bands in all) and guest DJs (like the Fringe Factory ladies) all day long. We couldn't fit all the fun into our regular hours, so we're opening earlier at 10AM and closing later at 10PM on Saturday. (I'll be posting band profiles and interviews on the website throughout the next day; follow us on Twitter for the latest updates and sidebar inanities.)

My co-workers have been working their little butts off to make sure we have the best Record Store Day, and it seems every day this week there's been a real danger of being crushed by boxes and boxes of awesomeness. There are tons of exclusive releases* (way too much to list here, but please read that note below) that you can only buy from indie record stores like ours, in addition to the tons of giveaway stuff (besides the requisite free beer and cake).

Also, Adam and Shannon are getting ready to put A LOT of CDs and records on sale for this weekend, so be sure to stop in for some amazing bargains. Don't forget that Eddie's got the sidewalk sale outside, too. A quick recap from Eddie himself:

"You know how great last year's Sidewalk Sale was, and this time I've had a whole year to put it all together. Those of you who love to shop our dollar bins (and judging from how often I have to fill it up, that's quite a few of you) will get to see all the goodies I've been hoarding that are just too good for the dollar bin. Hundreds of indie, import and out-of-print titles on CD and DVD will be bargain priced just for Record Store Day. We'll be setting up some tables in front of the store and sidewalk-selling from 10AM until dusk, so come on down and check out the incredible selection and best prices in town."

As you've probably guessed, we have a lot of amazing prizes to give away, but this week we got word of this one super-special prize package. Adam calls it the Charlie Bucket Special. Here's the scoop from the press release:

"On Record Store Day, April 18th, a handful of lucky Paul McCartney fans will be able to own a small piece of the legendary Abbey Road studios -- five 10" vinyl acetate pressings of the song "Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight" will be enclosed in random copies of the LP vinyl version of Electric Arguments, recorded by Sir Paul's alter ego The Fireman. These incredibly collectible limited pieces (less than 25 manufactured worldwide) will be available with purchase ONLY at 5 randomly selected indie record stores in North America as part of the annual celebration of those retailers who connect the fans to the music."

Pretty nuts, huh? It kinda makes me nervous. I don't know we have one of these "golden tickets" (no, we haven't opened all the Fireman LPs we have in stock!), but if one of our customers gets this, I might start crying. As for the rest of the prizes, you'll have to come into the store on Saturday to see what you can win.

Deluxe thanks go to our indie neighbors for helping us tremendously with Record Store Day: the Porter Bar, the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club, Libertine, the Highland Inn, and 42 Degrees South (who celebrate 6 years in L5P this week. Congrats!). Thanks also go out to the EARL, Variety Playhouse, the Five Spot, Smith's Olde Bar, the Tabernacle, and the Masquerade for donating a ton of concert tickets for us to give away during the festivities. And, of course, we need to thank Orange Amps (who, in addition to providing amps for our bands to use, are giving us some Micro Crush amps to raffle off!), Pabst Blue Ribbon (you know, for the gallons of free beer), Alternative (for the gift bags for the bands), and Ria's Bluebird and El Myr (for feeding us).

Hope to see you sometime on Saturday for Record Store Day. Remember, we're open from 10 to 10, and the live music starts at 11AM!
Come by, say hi.

Free PBR + packed record store +bald doofus = something's going to get knocked over. I apologize in advance.

Do you guys have many copies of the Tom Waits and Jesus Lizard offerings? Desperate for both of those. (I don't even know how much the JL is, but don't care.)

I found a great stack of treasures at the last sidewalk sale. Looking forward to it (because I REALLY NEED more CDs stacked on my desk...)
