On slashers

Are there any (decent) slasher films that try to establish a true ensemble such that one is left guessing as to who will actually survive? I know it's kind of asking a lot for a slasher movie to deliver anything worthwhile beyond cool kills, but it really bugs me how rote the formula is. It seems like lessening the focus on one or two leads would be an easy way to provide some actual suspense.

It may not be exactly what you're asking about, but I thought "Wrong Turn 2" at least had you guessing (often wrongly) about what happens to whom.

I'll have to check that one out. I should mention that the last horror series I admired in this regard was "Feast". As shoddy as those films were on a technical level, I had a lot of fun with them simply because I was left genuinely guessing which broad caricature would survive.

MINDHUNTERS. Schlock, but it kept me guessing nevertheless.

And my nom for the "surprising survivors, but not a slasher": DEEP BLUE SEA.

Both with LL Cool J.

"Penny Dreadful", one of the first Horrorfest "Eight Films to Die For", was different in that it didn't have a true ensemble cast. Most of the action focuses on the killer's tormenting the main character. To be sure, cannon fodder characters appear for a few extra kills, but none of them is given the depth of attention a member of an ensemble would. Some may, I guess, say this pushes it into the so-called torture porn sub genre, but I think it skirts the border enough to still be called a slasher. Most of the Horrorfest films are crap, I admit, but I really liked this one. It's still my favorite of the 18 Horrorfest films I've seen.

Of the old school 80's slashers, I'd put in April Fool's Day.
