LOTR trilogy (theatrical edition) on Blu-Ray

Thread Starter
I got a notice from Amazon.com that it's "coming", but no date yet on the release. Throw in a "Boo Hiss" from me to this being only the Theatrical Edition and not the SEs, or both on the same packages.

Also, they mentioned in another e-mail that Ghostbusters will hit BR on June 16th with lots of new special features.

Note to self: get a Blu-Ray player by June 16th.

I'll own Ghostbusters on June 16th, even if i DON'T have a blu-ray player. (please don't ask me why)

That's a pretty damn nice box. Getting close to having to upgrade now...damn it.

Fans are pelting it with 1 star reviews due to it being TE elease only. I'll probably buy this one at the Amazon price because Xenu knows when the EE will be released. TE is better than nothing, I love these movies.

I imagine the EE will be released at the latest by the time the firt Hobbit movie hits. Screw the theatricals, my DVDs will hold me over till then.

Get a PS3 because the movies are being released on the same day as the new game.

I seem to remember PJ saying long ago he's not going anywhere near these movies again until The Lovely Bones is done. Next year's a safe bet.

TNT shows the theatrical cuts in HD at least once a month. That will tide me over just fine till then.

I got the Extendeds on DVD, and they'll hold for now. I'm not mad that they're double-dipping or anything, I'm just not going to buy these right now.

With my experience with Blu-Ray players, the PS3 has a much faster loading time when you compare it to just a movie player.

I'm such a battered spouse, I will be getting these as soon as they drop.
Theatrical edition? Who are they kidding?
I won't touch these. And I remember plenty of times that Peter Jackson was quoted that there was more footage from LOTR that didn't make it into the EE's, and if he doesn't refinish and re-edit again he would like to see the unfinished scenes show up as new special content. I've been waiting for THAT set.
I can't imagine these will sell at all. Anyone's who's in this format will already know more content's coming. Blu-Ray hasn't penetrated the market enough for WB/New Line to be able to fool anyone who has one.
As much as they'll rely on the geek crowd picking these up yet again - the words "Theatrical edition" mean nothing to most people, they'll simply see Blu Ray. They'll sell well enough with most people looking for their HD LOTR fix.

It's just unfortunate.

Esp. since the Extended Editions are just plain better films.

I don't even have an HDTV, let alone a blu-ray player. Yet I still own:

Speed Racer
Sunshine
Serenity
Slumdog Millionaire
Synecdoche, NY
LA Confidential
The Godfather Trilogy

on Blu-ray. I just ordered the Criterion Blu-ray of Benjamin Button too.

Don't ask.

As for LOTR, I'm in no rush to jump on these movies yet. I've actually cooled on them quite a bit now that several years have passed. They're movies that I skip around on and rarely watch all the way through.

I'm sorry, but I have to ask...why? Do you plan on buying one in the near future?

For the cost of these films you could be 1/5th of the way to a decent HDTV by now.

Yea, it's sad. I DO plan to invest in a PS3. Some of the movies were bought out of insanity (Speed Racer love), some were bought when I saw a deal too good to pass up (26 bucks for Benjamin Button with free shipping and no tax!!?), and some are birthday presents (Slumdog and Synecdoche).

I guess I'm shooting for something really nice in the future.

Plus, I mooch off the technology of my friends... Hahahaha.

EDIT: I have a lot of S movies...
$26 isn't a good deal.

Sadly I wait till I can get the disc under $20. If I have to watch something right away, I just rent it.
For a 2 disc Criterion blu-ray, I think it's probably about as good as it gets. Criterion rarely drops really low.

And clearly, the online retailer thought so too. I just got an e-mail this morning that told me that they canceled my order! They gave me no reason. But I looked up the item right away and saw that it was now 29 bucks. BAH!

I will make like Aziz and threaten the retailer with the boycotting power of my Twitter account! Followed by a baker's dozen!!!!
