The Son of the Bride (El hijo de la novia, 2001)

After seeing El Aura, I had to see more stuff with Ricardo Darin in it. He's a fantastic actor with tremendous skill. The way he carried El Aura combined with Bielinsky's direction was something special, making it one of my favorite films of all time. Hijo de la Novia is another great film carried by Darin in a completely different way than El Aura, showing Darin's diversity. I wish he was more recognized in Europe or the States because it'd be a pleasure to see him alongside other international stars.

The film focuses on a successful restaurant owner (Darin), whose extremely busy with his own life, and while very wealthy, has no real quality relationships. His girlfriend wants to leave because he won't commit to anything serious, he rarely sees his father or mother who has Alzheimer's disease, and his ex-wife complains about his lack of time spent with their daughter. An old friend comes back into his life, and that combined with a minor heart attack begins to put everything in perspective for him. It's definitely a feel good film, and it's delight to watch as everything comes together so well at the end. Perhaps not the most realistic portrayal of life, but it's certainly fun to watch. There's plenty of black humor, and it was nominated for best foreign language film for the (I believe) 2002 Oscars. A really fun feel good film with a lot to say. Hopefully director Juan Jose Campanella will get work in the States outside of directing episodes of House and Law and Order.

Hey! I recently reviewed this. The review basically agrees with your assessment, although I added lots of mediocre jokes.

Good film, and I'll definitely check out El Aura some time.
