The 09 NFL Draft - Page 5

Eric Cordo, Clearly Pat White is the best of Miami's Day 1 draft picks! Sure Corner Back is a need, But I wanted Kenny Britt Damn it, So, Day 1, I give Miami a B-. Without White a C.
And it begins agan. Bears finally pick. Jets trade up to top pick in 3rd.
Cowboys have 12 picks today, Bears have 9.
Heh, the Bears take the pool jumper!

Gotta be faster than that, Anya!
And the Raiders take another guy who was projected much later. I'd be livid.
Damn, the Bengals take Michael Johnson, I was hoping he'd fall to Tampa or that they'd trade up to get him.
You guys are much, much smarter about this stuff than I am, but so far I really like Atlanta's picks.
Love the Roy Miller pick, just the right fit for the kind of defense Bates is looking to run.
I don't know if he is a Burner, but, Miami Finally drafted the Big WR they need, in Patrick Turner. Then Miami finally realized that it is better to Receive, so they took Ohio State WR Brian Hartline. Both are tall wide outs, PT is 6'5, and BH is 6'2.
Jesus christ Detroit, we don't need more wide receivers especially when we don't have an inside linebacker.
Calvin Johnson can leap over triple teams in a single bound, so yeah, I would have gone with some defense as well.
I want to punch the "steroids are as American as apple pie guy" in his tiny nuts.
While I was initially disappointed with 2 Corner Backs out of their first 3 picks, now that Miami drafted 2 Tall WR's I am now content that their receiving core is set, outside of Receiving TE. TE John Nalbone from Monmouth NJ taken by Miami, WOW!!! 3 Receivers taken in a row.
Sanchez and Stafford are going to be busts! Seahawks got the best player in the draft, Aaron Curry!

The mighty NFC West will be ours once again.
Anymore Vanderbilt guys out there? Seems like the Bears are collecting them. Jerry Angelo usually hits big on 3rd round or later players. Hope it's on the DL.

*any Notre Dame players go yet?
I really like what the Bucs did in the later rounds. Got a good zone blocking lineman, a corner with potential, and a possible steal of a receiver.
What is it about the Bengals that they roll the dice on criminal and shady players?

Tough to judge drafts now but Denver and Oakland stick out as losers. And Detroits will be judged on Stafford.
Wow. Total players drafted from Florida, FSU, and Miami: 5. When's the last time that number was so low?

I was disappointed Gano didn't get drafted, when 2 other kickers and a punter did. The Lou Groza winner should at least get a little consideration. Greg Carr not getting drafted actually makes me giggle a little.
The Jaguars trade a second-rounder next year to take Derek Cox, a CB from William and Mary, in the third round. The front office loves him and says he'll be a starter in two years, which would give the Jags two starting corners from I-AA schools. If that's true, then I like the draft. If not..

I do like the two WR picks. Mike Thomas in the 4th and Jarrett Dillard in the 5th. Zach Miller from Nebraska-Omaha calls himself a "poor man's Tim Tebow." That'll sell a couple of jerseys.
Interesting--Josh Freeman says he was told by the Bucs that the Byron Leftwich signing was a "smokescreen" to make everyone think they weren't looking for another QB. And apparently Leftwich's contract has zero guaranteed money, so that he can be cut at anytime and the Bucs take no cap hit.
And yet they still traded up to get him. I thought the point of a smokescreen was to have someone fall to you...

If this was true I'm sure it would be news to Byron Leftwich.
I think Leftwich is smart enough to know that with no guaranteed money, he could still be cut.

I don't doubt part of the reason Leftwich was brought in was to throw teams off of what the Bucs were planning, but that wasn't the only reason.

Well, a bunch of FSU guys got signed as FAs today. Gano ended up going to the Ravens. Here's the list (if anyone cares):

*WR Greg Carr has signed with the San Diego Chargers.

*CB Tony Carter has signed with the Denver Broncos. I was really surprised he didn't get drafted. He's a pretty good cover corner.

*LB Kenny Ingram has signed with the New York Giants.

*DE Neefy Moffett has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

*LB Derek Nicholson has signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

*LB Toddrick Verdell has signed with the Houston Texans.

*RB Antone Smith will try out this weekend for the Detroit Lions "and signs are hopeful that he will sign a free agent contract after that, said Terry Watson, Smith’s agent."

What I'm saying is Leftwich probably had other options. I doubt he would have signed with TB if it was strictly for smokescreen purposes.

Freeman has the face of a 12 year old. Seriously, if anybody was in need of some facial hair it's this kid.

I think the Broncos took Moreno, in part, to show immediate return on investment for the Cutler deal. Out of all the players taken, Moreno probably has the best chance at immediately gaining good stats for his position. If the Broncos make Moreno the primary back and he stays healthy it wouldnt surprise me if he racked up 1200 + yards his first year. Then they could look back at the end of the year and say "see what the Cutler deal brought us." If they had taken Orakpo and Ayers with their first two picks, chances are their sack numbers would not be terribly impressive given that they are rookies and that the rest of the Denver D is so terrible.

Having said that, I definately wouldn't have taken a RB there if I'm Denver. Denver has shown over the years that you don't need a high pick RB to have a good running game. Take your Defense players in the first round and take a RB in the 2nd or 3rd.

Seriously, and compared to the body types of Stafford and Sanchez it seemed like Freeman looked a little bit thin. Then they gave his height/weight and I realized I'd just been looking at too many gigantic men on the television for the day.

I did like when they showed the highlight of his really long throw and Young immediately piped in with "I never could have made that throw."

Except Moreno at 12 was their draft pick.

Broncos should have packaged their 18 and their #1 next year and move up to 3 or 5 because it was known KC wanted to trade and Cleveland eventually did. Draft the Best DL and then use the 12 for a top LB/DL. 2 huge holes on defense filled.

The quote should have been "look at what the Cutler trade allowed us to do". Having 2 first rounders gave them the flexibility to take the RB.

Hey Fleed, have fun with Pat White. I watched him play for 4 great years. He's great.
Now there's word that they're talking about turning the draft into a prime-time mini-series. Round 1 on Thursday night, Rounds 2 & 3 on Friday, with the final rounds all day Saturday.
No. No no no. Not only is there too much conflict with NBA and NHL playoffs, the draft doesn't need to be drawn out over three days.

Pompoussory Estoppel, I was a little harsh on Miami for taking 2 cornerbacks in their first 3 picks. Now that they drafted 2 WR's and a TE, I am more than happy to give them an A for their draft, as I felt WR was a much bigger need, and that WR Kenny Britt looked like a more logical selection then CB Vonte Davis.

I am sure that Mel Kiper was puzzled by the Dolphin's 2nd rd selection of Pat White, as he feels White is a WR. However, Miami confirmed what their GM Jeff Ireland said about White in an interview "Pat White is going to be a QB" Jeff Ireland. That is not an exact quote, but close enough. Today, QB John Beck was released by Miami, and that means the 3 QB's on their roster are, Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, and Pat White. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Pat White unseas Chad Henne as Miami's Starting QB.
