I like watching for the crowd reactions, especially the inevitable booing of the overall 1st pick. The Mario Williams "overrated!" chant still gives me a chuckle.

Eh, there's plenty of opportunity for Cutler to blow up in their face, but both Cutler and Boldin are relatively young, productive, and in the primes of their careers. What are the odds that a random 2nd round pick is going to be better than Boldin, when all is said and done? Slim.

Especially since the crowd should've saved it for pretty much every other top 20 pick in that draft (D'Brickashaw Ferguson excepted, he's been terrific).
Well, both Cutler and Boldin have minor question marks next to their names. The upside on both of them is pretty tremendous, though and worth the risk.

I hate the Jet fans. They really need to get the draft out of NY every once in a while. There are plenty of cities that it could work. Chicago, Miami, Philly.

30 min untill NFL network starts it's draft day.

I don't think those two have what you'd term "upside" - I think that Boldin is already a top 5 WR and Cutler is already a top 10 QB. How much further "up" can they go?

Semantics aside, the ability to produce winning performances is something they'll have to prove. Cutler hasn't been in a playoff game and Boldin put up good numbers as a wide receiver next to the best wide receiver in league. While I don't think its terribly likely, I do think its possible that both could struggle in different situations.

I think Boldin's rookie season and his first season opposite rookie Fitzgerald showed he can thrive in less-than-ideal circumstances.

With Cutler, I DO think there is a bit of risk putting him into a situation where he has no NFL WRs and some dubious offensive coaches. His numbers will DEFINITELY drop off, and that doesn't really matter much as long as his wins increase.

What personal issues? He was public about wanting a new contract, and had that one blowup with the OC, but I've never heard/seen anything else.
Apparently all kinds of calls flying around about teams trading up and down in the top 10.
I'm hearing the Bucs are lining up potential trade partners to move down if certain players they're targeting are off the board by the time their pick rolls around.
And there go the boo birds!

Do they just boo out of tradition now?
It's the Jets fans practicing for later.
Sanchez is on his phone.
Jason Smith is the best prospect in the draft, IMO. No-brainer.
Kiper still thinks the Rams should have picked Sanchez.

If Mel Kiper ever got to run an NFL team, he'd make Matt Millen look like George Young.
His logic is that you let him sit a year or two under Bulger, that you don't let a franchise-type QB get away from you. I can sort of see the logic, but the Rams offensive line is such bad shape, they had to go that route here.

He's bad on QB's. Youtube had clips on the Cutler draft and he had the other 2 QB's taken rated higher. Those other 2 qb's were Vince Young and Matt Leinart.

I see the logic as well, but of the top NFL QBs right now - Manning, Brady, Roethlisberger, Cutler, Romo, Brees, Warner - only one was a super-high 1st rounder. So I tend to lean towards the thought process that you don't have to mortgage the franchise to get the franchise QB.

I also recall Kiper giving the business to Bill Polian for picking Trev Alberts and Marshall Faulk over Trent Dilfer; uh, which draft would you have rather had? IMO he overvalues QBs.

First mock-buster pick.
The Seahakws are probably going to jump all over Aaron Curry now.

That's why the draft is such a waste of time - you have from Jan on to look at game film, and a month or two to crunch combine numbers, but people talk about someone's stock rising "the last few days" before the draft.

I'd love to actually be in the know and find out if Jackson was KC's guy at the end of the season, or jumped up there after the combine, or after pro-day/visit with the team, or if they were sitting there "hey, we're down to a couple minutes...how about this Jackson kid?" "Sure, why the hell not!"
Damn, the Seahawks are going to have one hell of a linebacker corps now. If Hasselbeck is healthy, Seattle could be back next year.

Most of the speculation in January is coming from sportswriters, who aren't in on what's going on in the war rooms. The "rising stock" most likely comes from getting actual information from the teams as opposed to pure speculation.
Didn't Kiper prefer Leaf over Manning as well?

Given the collective track record and the guaranteed money, nobody should make the argument that a team needs to take a QB in the top 10. Especially one who is as big a question mark as Sanchez. Take somebody who won't be cashing paychecks while holding a clipboard.
There are fewer question marks about Sanchez than there are about Stafford.
Sanchez is still available Jets fans!

Oh, and as far as Draft coverage goes its all about the NFL Network for me. I love Rich Eisen, Faulk, et al. The clowns on ESPN sound like a bunch of talking heads to me.

Oh shit, first trade of the day just went down.

Looks like SAnchez will be playing in the Meadowlands. How about that Jet fans??!
Mort on ESPN thinks this next pick is getting traded, and I'm inclined to agree. Someone is going to move up to get Sanchez here.
Jets just traded up, Sanchez to the Big Apple.
Another great thing about the draft - "Hey, the Jets are taking Sanchez! I've heard of him! WHOOOOO!"

I'd take Monroe here if I were ANY team.
Indeed!
Berman: "It'll take the Jets fans about an hour to figure out something wrong with this."

EDIT: And there's three REALLY unhappy Jets fans in attendance. Probably wondering what they gave up to get up to this spot.
Its official Sanchez going to New York. BTW, why do Jet fans at the draft continue to make complete asses of themselves every year?

I'd rather have Stafford- but then again I'd rather have neither if I had to guarantee that much money and dedicate that many years to a potential bust. But the Lions were in a position where they had to take one of the two, at least more so than the Rams.
Cleveland moves down to 17 and gets the Jets' 2nd round pick and three players.

EDIT: One of those players is QB Brett Ratliff, which means the Browns could be moving Quinn or Anderson soon.
The Bengals go with Andre Smith from Bama, he of the infamous shirtless workout.
Andre Smith could be the best player in the draft or eat himself out of the league in 3 years.

My $$$ would be that they would trade Anderson. Though who knows what Mangini is thinking.
Raiders probably go for the fastest WR here.
Darrius Heyward-Bey does not look happy to be a Raider.
WOW.

Al Davis is either a true genius or has completely fallen off the deep end. I'd lean towards the latter.

Hellpaso is probably throwing stuff around his abode at this point in time.
Davis loves speed, and Heyward-Bey ran the fastest time at the combine.
Jacksonville's been trying to trade out of this pick, but if they can't, Crabtree goes to them.
Raiders just love to fuck up.

Was wondering his thoughts. I know I'd be pissed.
Sure, Heyward-Bey ran fast at the combine, but look at Crabtree's game film from last season. Three days of workouts in sweatpants can't outweigh that.

I'd be surprised if paso can even form words right now..."NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Farg frack garrrr hurrgggg"
Ah, Jags go with Monroe. Makes sense, given how little depth their O-line had last year.

There's rumors out of the Crabtree camp that he wasn't going to be happy if he dropped. Well, he's dropping.

If I were a team's GM, the combine would essentially be something to ELIMINATE players from consideration, not to vault them INTO it.

But I'm not an NFL GM, more's the pity.
