Maybe we should ask her how she voted on Prop 8.
Guys, let's not go overboard here. Barack Obama has said he doesn't support same-sex marriage for religious reasons, but nobody has ever accused him of preaching hate. Because that would obviously be ridiculous.

Oh, and fuck this chick. Why has California, of all places, become the poster state for ANTI-gay marriage, for fuck's sake?

Because everyone knows that ridiculing and crushing people who don't think the same way we do is PROGRESS!

Don't we pretty much know by now that he only takes that position for political reasons?
Yeah, but she was factually wrong on the whole people having the right to choose.

Because they don't.

In like...46 states.

ETA - Whoa shit, fast thread...was in response to El Cap.

(a) Which of those 2 positions?
(b) No.

You're making a pretty harsh indictment of our democracy.

Were you active in the CHUD 08 Pres Election thread? Also, did you watch ANY of the media commentary on his "civil union" comments during the debates?

Cause it was mentioned a few times.

True, but you are missing my point. Hilton's proposed answer was worse in my view, he said that she should have said at a minimum that "under our system the issue should be resolved on a state by state manner". Why would saying that make it a more tolerant or non hateful statement?

Because initatives get created and passed way too fucking easy in this state.

Jared, I must have missed both the CHUD 08 Pres Election Thread and ALL of the media commentary on Pres. Obama's "civil union" comments during the debate, because I'm not aware of any admission by Pres. Obama that (a) he only declines to support same-sex marriage for political reasons, or (b) he only supports same-sex civil unions for political reasons.

Which is what Captain Zahn was asking ("don't we pretty much know...").

I'm not saying it's more tolerant or non hateful -- but I will say that I'm pretty sure that's how we do things in this country.

You know...state by state...with laws and court decisions and stuff. I might have to check my pocket constitution, though.

I don't want to put words in Captain Zahn's mouth, but I don't think that's what he was implying at all. I think it was pretty obvious that he meant that it was what we were supposed to have inferred at this point.

I'm not sure if it's more tolerant/less hateful, but it certainly doesn't answer the same question. It doesn't provide any insight as to her thoughts on on the issue. It would be passing it off on "the people" as if she weren't one of "the people."

But then again, I don't think Hilton should be in the position to dictate the terms of something as important as a Miss USA pageant.

Of course it's done that way, but that's legalese to get around not answering the question.

In her statement she sort of said she supported gay marriage, Hilton's proposed statement doesn't.

Okay, come on. Of course anything that he says or advises other people to say needs to be assumed to be in support of gay marriage.

Seriously, that's not even an issue.

DaveB, Miss California stating that marriage remain between a Man and a Woman does not make her bigoted, it just makes her Christian. Just because 4 states made a mistake in allowing Marriage between the same sex (Vermont, Ct, Hawaii, and Massachusettes, doesn't mean that every state should allow it.)

Yeah, but ElCap is kind of right. We know what Perez Hilton means when he says, "It should be up to the States to decide," because we have context. If an unknown beaty pageant contestant were to give that as her response? It's totally non-committal. It doesn't tell us anything.

There is one legitimately execrable person involved in this debate, and it's Perez Hilton.

Bad Fleed! No!

Also, this thread gave me an ad up top implying that I could be the next Miss Teen USA. I'm gonna go for it!

I actually lost because I filled out my application incorrectly. In the area where it said: "DO NOT WRITE IN THIS SPACE," I put "OK."
Mr. Freeze, No one is saying that people of the same sex cannot live together, get a civil union, or adopt children, people are just saying to leave Marriage between a man and a woman.

No, we get that. We're just saying that those people are wrong.

I think it's a test, maybe you were supposed to correct the spelling error in that sentence?

Who are these people duke fleed? What makes them have these oh so wrong stances?

This girl will be back. I hear in the same week she was the Pork Princess AND Little Miss Kosher.

Re: "opposite marriage"

"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite [sex] marriage," no? Granted if that's what she meant it's still really poorly/oddly worded, but this is a Miss America contestant we're talking about here.

Or were you guys just being sarcastic and weren't really confused about that?

BTW,

I genuinely laughed out loud
Mr. Freeze, The people that want Marriage to be between a man and a woman are most likely Christians. They do not have the wrong opinion, Marriage has traditionally been between a man and a woman and there is no reason to change it.

Are you sure you don't want to take a shot at acting? Apparently movies like Star Trek are casting right now.
Pretty sure the reason is the waves of gay people who want to get married Fleed.

Really duke fleed? Has that definition been around since the beginning of time??? Wow, maybe I'm all turned around on this subject. If the definition of marriage in a religion has never, ever , ever changed ... then, I can't argue with that.
I shouldn't be using Fleed as an example for anything, but it's that kind of fucking retarded logic that pisses me off more than anything. Just because something was a certain way a thousand years ago doesn't mean it has any place in our society today.

100 years ago, gay people couldn't come out. Period. Hence, there was no reason for gay marriage until society evolved to accept homosexuals. Women also couldn't vote and black people couldn't share water fountains. There weren't laws on illegal use of the Internet, because the Internet didn't exist. And so forth.

What happens is that THINGS FUCKING CHANGE, and then SOCIETY FUCKING CHANGES WITH THEM.

By Fleed's fucked up explanation that it's okay because CHRISTIANITY, 10,000 years ago people worshipped the sun. Then organized religion came around with its excuses for intolerance. Religion has not traditionally been about intolerance (or Jesus), so there's no reason to change it. So by Fleed's logic, Christians should not be allowed to practice their religion. In fact, we should all reject society, religion and technology and go back to living in caves. But I'm sure even that would piss off some group of intolerant assholes, and on and on and on until fuck everyone.

I've always wanted to pin down some answers from a defense-of-marriage person, so maybe you can help me out:

Would gay marriage somehow adversely affect your life? If so, how? If not, why are you opposed to it?

Because the Bible doesn't support it? Because you're grossed out by butt secs? Because Bill O'Reilly said so? Or is it just old-timey bigotry reinforced by your political party and church affiliation?

What???

And I can't believe you guys are arguing with Fleed. Are you serious?
I could have explained it better.

Religion's rationale - no need to allow gay marriage, because it goes against tradition.

That "tradition" affects all of us, whether we're religious or not. Thing is, religion goes against tradition, too, because it's a relatively new development in humanity's time on this planet. (Although I guess if you're religious, you believe that God created the universe, which makes my argument a moot point, since then religion would be as old as time.)

And I'd much rather hear Fleed try to make a valid point on an important issue than hear another goddamn X-pun.

This part right here wouldn't fly on a fundamental level with fundies. At least, the young-earth ones, anyway.

That's actually a foolish question for any position. If your stance for or against any particular issue is based only on how it affects you, you're pretty goddamn selfish.

Right, but it is a good start to extrapolatory thinking.
This thread is dumb. Arguing over whether she has integrity for saying what she thinks? Yeah, I don't think one can be familiar with a very discriminatory environment and give her any credit. It's clear she thought it was OK to say, because that's "how she was raised", as in, in her tiny part of the universe, this prejudice is fairly open, and therefore I doubt she even seriously considered what she said was wrong, or that others would disprove, like the judges, because then she wouldn't have said it. Fuck, I hear somebody yelling that black people are n-----s and around when I'm chilling with a black friend of mine, and I'm supposed to go, "Well, at least he's an honest individual! Hum-de-dum! That guy has some guts!"
Again, her answer was basically that she thinks it's great that people can get married either way, if you interpret it literally;

"I think it's great Americans are able to choose one or the other,"

Then she went on to express her personal views. However, I thought Perez' main complaint was that she didn't say it was a state issue ...

Okay, I see what you're saying. I don't, however, think that was Hilton's main complaint.
Scratch, It is ok that we disagree about gay marriage, but please do not bring race into this discussion. I do not think is right to compare the same sex marriage issue with people having to be segregated because of race.

One very important point is being overlooked: for the first time ANYWHERE someone from North Carolina is perceived as being more open-minded than someone from California. EAT IT, West Coasters!

I think the saddest part of this story is that Perez Hilton is judging a Miss America pageant. Did they give him one of those sports broadcast pens so that he could draw coke dust particles over the contestants or scrawl "skank" over their heads during the pageant?
