Caprica DVD movie/Pilot - Page 2

I'm not sure how the people of the Caprica series are supposed to be able to answer that question. They don't even know that the question will be relevant anytime soon, nor did they go thru the trials of the BSG crew and the Cylon crew, that did make that question relevant.

Wait, was this a trick question?

I mean in its basic form: action/drama aboard a military spaceship. Obviously in other ways it was very different.

That was a fantastic pilot. If only my cable company/DVR hadn't fucked with the recording of last night's episode so that it stops and starts every five seconds.
Well, it's on USA (so I can record it in HD) and Syfy again today and pretty much every day.
Pilot was great. 2nd episode wasn't bad, just average, more like it's purpose was to set up something.

Best bit: Graystone house robot chants "and the crowd goes frakkin' wild".
Still good. Fingers crossed.
I think I liked the second episode more than the pilot. For some reason, I'm getting a heavy young Uncle Junior vibe from Joe Adama's brother -- maybe it's the 50s-style clothing, but he looks a lot like Junior from the flashbacks on The Sopranos.

I'm really digging the way they switch between robot Zoe and human Zoe. It's a great visual way to show the confusion not only she has but other have in dealing with her.

This show is just brimming with ideas, and I hope they're able to navigate successfully through them.

That was a highlight for me too. I am still enjoying it. It is a slow story right now, but I don't seem to mind.

Yeah, with the kid going to Tauron school on the weekends, there's definitely a Jewish aspect there.

I like the offhand way the uncle's homosexuality was dealt with.

I can understand why CyberZoe didn't reveal herself to those two lab kids, but why keep her existence a secret once she was alone with her dad?

Man, it's been awhile since I saw the pilot, but didn't he basically kidnap her essence from the little virtual world she set herself up in during their last meeting there? Then he pretty much lost her essence (or he at least thought so) when he was trying to put her in that body? Maybe she doesn't trust him enough again yet, or is waiting for him to make some progress with the cylons.

That was great. I had to rewind to make sure I heard it correctly.

Yeah, I can completely understand why Zoe is unwilling to let her father in on her existence right now.

Really liked the third episode.

One thing that I find interesting is that the humans in BSG and Caprica are more extreme (or maybe inexorable) in their behavior. The crowd's reaction to Zoe's mom and her revelation are somewhat natural, but I can't help but think that in real life (in the US) such a revelation would be greeted with a degree of sympathy from parents who know all too well that their children are strangers.

I think the bulk of that crowd were relatives or friends of people that were killed on the train. I can see why they might react like they did in the heat of just finding out. If she had maybe did it on TV or something the sympathy angle might have had time to develop.

"How about a good frack?"
Angeli's already a better writer here than he ever was on BSG.
Joe Adama is one cold son of a bitch.

Did anyone else find Duck showing up as one of Sam's gangster friends and Cat showing up as the PR expert distracting?
I knew I recognized her. If it must be justified, she's Kat's grandmother or some such.
No backup copies of the daughter's avatar lying around? No security measures to check who might be fiddling with the secret computer storage room? Bah.
Those things kind of tie into Greystone's arrogance. He doesn't think he needs a backup. He doesn't think anyone can get into his secret storage.
Anyone else still watching this? Seems ratings are slipping quite a bit (not that I'm helping. I don't get Sci-Fi and have to watch everything on Hulu.)

I'm still kind of digging it. I like the kind of slow pace its got going on. I feel like its trying to take its time, as it builds towards something big (whether it be something new to the universe or just the impending cylon war.)

The only thing I'm finding difficult about it is that there aren't any characters that I've been able to really latch to. I like pretty much everyone on the show, but there aren't any standouts like Chief Tyrol, Colonel Tigh, or Baltar, were on Battlestar.

Still I'm very interested in seeing where this show is going, and hope that it doesn't end up being a one season show.
I think Adama's brother has been amazing so far.

I agree. I guess I knew they weren't gonna kill Trixie, but I thought the scene with her and him was very good when he ws driving her "home".

I also thought Oswalt was great as a talk show guy. When he said "I don't know why I made a joke about that..." he knew that he was helping the Graystone casue, and that he really thought he shouldn't have made a joke at their expense. It was very humanizing.

I also liked the dancing scene with Zoe and Geekguy. I'm still liking the cuts from Cylon to Zoe. It helps keep her humanized in my mind.

Um what else? I want to see more of the headmistress, I guess. It's kind of confusing as she seemed sinister in the pilot, and now I don't really kow what to think.

Oh, and I agree, they are certainly taking their time with the story, but I like it so far.
They're still developing the world, so I don't blame them for taking their time. I just think all the cultural and religious aspects are fascinating, especially the fact it's the followers of the monotheistic religion who are the radical fanatics.
Oh oh! That's is something that I forgot and that I am really interested in so far too, Richard. The cultural and religious stuff. Part of that was explored in the ride home with Trixie and Sam. Part of it was explored with Grandma (scary!) and Josef. I really think her talk withJosef turned him round on killing Trixie, even tho it was obviously supposed to lean him toward being okay with it. The talk show he watched could have helped him too.

I just remembered the trick Sam play on Josef with washing up. He knew Josef would not go thru with it. It's tricky liking a character that is obviously a criminal and has probably killed multiple people. Like Dexter kinda.

ETA, Also, when Sam said that Tamara was going to make them all proud, I thought he was part of STO. I'm probably reading too much into it though. I thought it was Sam that slipped the headmistress the note at first.

The ratings slipping isn't that surprising, most sci-fi geeks tend only like shit filled with space battles and techno-babble. I mean even Stargate Universe, is getting crap from it's fan base for trying to be a more character driven show. Hopefully the network will stick with it for at least another season.

I agree. I'm currently doing a rewatch of Battlestar with my roommate who's never seen it, and am constantly surprised how it rarely feels like a science fiction show. Which is a good thing, and Caprica seems to be the same, in that they put the characters first, and the sci-fi stuff second. I'm definitely liking the stuff with Sam and young Adama, and I'm intrigued by the stuff with Agent Durham, and the Greystones. Can't wait for next week. Hopefully they add more pieces to the puzzle before the hiatus starts up in a couple weeks.

I'm completely on board with this show, watching it via Amazon. In a way I'm wishing Moore & Co could have used this kind of story telling with BSG.

I suspect part of the problem is the "OMG it's a GURL you know wimmim can't be protogonas eehu show her Boobs" Fanboy mentality.

^Actually the switching from Cylon to teenage girl is kind of disturbing, especially with Geek Guy kind of jonesing for her/it. So is the point that he can sense a living soul in the metal frame, or that he's so alienated from Humanity that he projects onto the machine?

So far Sam Adama and Zooey are the stand outs for me.

Heh, I'm the opposite. I already find nearly every character more relatable than anyone in BSG. I think a lot of it has to do with these characters having connections that don't require them to be drunk and/or suicidal to be vulnerable.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It feels like a scifi novel adapted for the screen without cutting all the details out and replacing them with explosions like most adaptations do.

Also, Grandma Adama creeps me the fuck out.

I think it's an interesting way to go about maintaining the humanity of her character but it's also kind of funny in what they choose to show her reacting to, and what they don't. For instance, in the last episode, the tech was essentially drilling her vagina. No cut scene for that one, eh?
I'm digging it, but man this is one weird ass show.

How 'bout that V-world Tamara? Hubba Hubba.
For some reason I found the subplot with geek and Tamara really...cute. When she was telling him to get out there in the real world, I was genuinely touched. I hope they stick with it.
Favorite moment? The seeming Crimson Skies homage with the zeppelin and the aerial dogfight.

The moment when Greystone asks the Cylon to rip its own arm off, and we see Zoe struggling with not wanting to but having to in order to maintain her cover was downright creepy.

The Tauron funeral was a great look into that culture, with the eventual knock on the door from cyber-geek hanging over the whole thing.

Damn I'm loving this show.
I was a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica (yes, I even dug the finale), but once that show ended, I felt like I was done with the universe. Any news about Caprica was met with complete indifference on my part. When it was released on dvd over the summer, I passed on watching it, and figured I'd do so with the series as well. Once it hit Hulu, however, I gave it a cursory viewing, and surprisingly enough, the show has really hooked me.

I love the slow burn of the story, the pulpy noir styling of v-world, and the way they've really managed to expand on the cultures of the colonies in ways that BSG tried, and often failed to do (The Woman King, I'm looking in your direction.) I love that Tamara is becoming some kind of v-world crime boss/quasi-Neo, and goddammit, the Adama theme popping up during the funeral got to me.
Yeah the whole Tauron ceremony was quite touching. A really nice way to fold Greek mythology into this "alternate" universe.

I'm watching BSG S1 in Blu Ray and realized I still have no feel for the Cosmography of the 12 Colonies. Are they 12 systems close to one another? Do they actually map to the Constellations in the Zodiac? Because if it's the latter it implies this civilization is much much bigger than BSG portrayed.
I'm pretty sure they were just supposed to be 12 habitable planets in one big solar system (a la Firefly), but I think they also had mining operations and such much further out (Ragnar Anchorage and Armistice Station were probably in different systems, for example. And they make a few references to making jumps 'past the red line' which apparently marked the distance past which the accuracy of the FTL drives starts to go bad) and they didn't seem to have any sort of faster than light communications systems, so Colonial government wouldn't really be feasible across multiple systems.

Apparently there are 3 stars in one system and some of the colonies share orbits.
I liked the ceremony like most of you. I liked Tamara's story starting to play out. At first she was kinda timid, and by the end she was doing the six-walk.

Zoe had some funny looks to the board, and for a second, I thought the plan was to kill the whole board! Zoe hesitating on ripping her arm off was a good scene too. The girl that plays Zoe is very good witht e facial acting. I don't think she had a word of dialogue this episode.
I cant get into this at all and I loved BSG. All of the characters leave me cold, none of them are particularly interesting or have any redeeming features. And, and yes this is bit ridiculous sounding, the opening sequence is just awful.

So Adama's dad is sort-of mates with the bloke who created the Cylons? Thats a real stretch, at a Darth Vader built C3PO level.

I think this is a bit of a disaster to be honest.
I'm surprised to be enjoying the show so far. Mainly because I didn't expect it to be very good. First of all, prequels are usually a terrible idea, who wants to know follow a story knowing how it will end? I'd rather get a fresh story that has the potential to surprise me. Oh it also probably had to do with the last season and finale of BSG, the finale I thought was flat out bullshit.

I dunno, it goes some ways to explaining how the Final 5 got so close to the Adama family. But beyond that, I dig the Tamara character as a separate thing from all the Zoe Graystone stuff.
They've written it pretty believably, too. It's not like Graystone and Adama have become best friends or anything. They've only talked a couple of times since the pilot, and one of those times was to have Sam beat Graystone's ass.

I suspect that once word gets out that there's an unkillable chick running around in V-world that the STO's going to be after Tamara.

And my theory for why the STO wanted Zoe's avatar program in the first place: They were planning to all copy/upload themselves into v-world, and then either do a mass Heaven's Gate style suicide or a huge coordinated suicide bombing across all twelve colonies, believing that their avatar's have given them immortality.
I usually zone out a couple of times each episode, this one had me the whole time. Nerd Zoe in V-Word was great.

Three more episodes left until fall.
appears they are running the eps out of order again as the next episode is about Family Day.

Not sure what this is referring to, could you clarify?

Still digging the show quite a bit. I'm finding myself more interested in the Graystone sections of the show, and I quite like this Vergis character they've come up with as sort of a bizarro Tauron Daniel. Also loved the quick shot we got of Tauron City. It had a real Byzantine feel to it which fits perfectly with the Tauron-Greek cultural connection they've been playing with.

I'm also fascinated by the fact that Clarice's is seeming less and less like she's an absolute villain. As of right now she seems unconnected to the bombings that have been going on. It seems like the end result of her views on the use of the Zoe Avatar and the concept of apotheosis are going to lead directly to the STO becoming cylons.

It's shame we're fast approaching a long hiatus as the show's finally starting to heat up.

I think she got mixed up with Community, but I'm just guessing.

ETA: Just watched it. I'm usually a day behind on these things. Still liking the pacing and Vergas was a good character. I love how CylonZoe's eye focused on Daniel and Cyrus? during that early scene. Whichever one was talking she focused on and shifted in preparation of the next thing to be said. Also, I guess I never noticed, but the holo bands do the scrolling eye thing, like the centurions.
Totally digging this show now. I'm invested in the characters and the plot is shaping up nicely. The "one month later" thing threw me off though. Why would Joesph wait a month before diving into the holo-band to find Tamara? Also, happy to see Vergis come into the picture. His ending convo with Daniel was aces. Lastly, I love the CGI backdrops in this show. It doesn't really look like anything else in sci-fi. Not nearly as dystopian as Blade Runner, but it is sorta evocative of both it and Coruscant.

ETA:

Wait, only 3 more episodes? 9 total would make this almost British in length.
