EDIT: Some always strip at the annual folk festival here, but there haven't been any problems with law enforcement that I've heard of. I only know of cute girls who have.

Women get tased too.

Just because certain infractions aren't consistently enforced doesn't mean you can or should resist if the cops pay attention to you. The cops repeatedly asked him to dress, he repeatedly refused. When they chose to arrest him he resisted, so they tased him. Nothing wrong with that.

Although I give him props for bravery. He's very very small.

To be fair, he was (hopefully) in violation of the local public decency laws.

ETA - You know what I hope for...? I hope that, some day, some guy/gal surfaces and they're totally immune to the taser or something like that. Did we watch the same video? Where the naked wizard wasn't following simple instructions? It seemed as if he would have just complied and covered his penis, then the cops would have left and then he could whipped it out again later.

Not to mention the issue was made by the police to begin with. If somebody was bothered by the arse, they should approach him. But I'm increasingly seeing a reluctance to deal with other people. Note theatre seats that include buttons to alert security guards to an annoying patron. I'm not saying you should take their shit.

But it's an absurd law. Rapists and molesters do their jobs just as well with clothing-only laws. And I'm speaking as somebody who wouldn't engage in this exhibitionism. Last fall a nude bike rally went on to protest, something, I don't remember, but I cannot recall anybody feeling threatened by, or arresting some people at their most vulnerable doing something goofy.

They tried to cuff him. Believe it or not, it's difficult to pull someone's hands behind their back when they're fighting it, and it's possible for the cops to accidentally dislocate shoulders or break arms and wrists.

Except in certain well-labeled areas, it's always illegal to be nude in public. You don't like the law, change the law instead of just disobeying it. You disobey it you may get arrested, even if the cops don't always choose to enforce it.

Thing is there's a potential abuse of authority with any tool that the cops have at their disposal. I'd be much more comfortable with taser use if the technology could be refined in such a way as to never cause permanent damage or death, but it's still better than the cop pulling a gun on the guy.

Incidentally, in Jared's scenario, odds are that the hypothetical taser-resistant guy won't be some naked jackass at a concert, but some shitbag who's being arrested for beating his wife or kid.

Wow, that would be even more absurd. The absurdity being vulnerability pitted against force, because the force feels threatened by a guy with a tiny dick.

Given how much difficulty they had trying to get his hands behind him for the handcuffs - which are necessary so the arrestee doesn't punch, scratch, gouge or grab a cop's gun - and wanting to avoid the potential for broken arms and all, I'd say the taser was a reasonable course of action. A zap of a few seconds probably does much less damage on average than cracked ribs and dislocated shoulders from a pigpile.

It's difficult for 2 or 3 people to immobilize a fighting opponent. It's not nearly as easy as you seem to think it is.

This is too funny.

I take it you guys saying "there's three of them, why couldn't they just hold him down" haven't actually tried to take down a person resisting that much. It's not as easy as it looks.

Exactly -- the worry on the part of a cop is that the dude will struggle so much that he might force them to seriously injure him or he might injure one of them (which, btw, is a whole 'nother set of felonies you don't want). So they remove his ability to keep resisting.

There was no chance of using the pepper spray with so many people around, and the asp wasn't the best choice for the same reason. They were either going to have to beat the shit out of this guy using their fists or tase him and let the magic of electricity do it for them.

To his credit, he kept babbling his spiel the whole time and took all that taser could give -- most people would have been screaming and blubbering in their own feces at that point.

I would like the pro-taser people to mention a time they believe the weapon was abused.

Also, I wonder how some electrocution is much better than a little force to handcuff somebody. But, er, to begin with, I think it is valid to question the law, cause the last thing I want is for police to be patrolling music festivals for horny people in the bushes. Which will/does happen.

Not only is it extremely difficult to take down someone who is resisting, but the officers also have an added disadvantage because they have to practice weapon retention in a crowd of people. All it takes is some other jackass to run in and try to unholster a weapon and shit goes from "stupid nude wizard" to "drunk homicide" really quick.

Inman Morales in Brooklyn, was standing on a ledge and fell 10 feet to the pavement after being tasered. maybe not abuse per se, but it was a bad choice to zap him at that time, mostly because I don't think anything was set up for him to land on.

Robert Dziekański at Vancouver International Airport. He was tasered within 25 seconds of the cops arriving, and they tased (tazed?) him 5 times. Based on what I know the case, he spoke no English and the cops didn't use translation services to try to persuade him to calm down first, so I'm pretty sure it was abused in that situation. Fucking violent Canadians.
