Roger Ebert Loves May

I haven't delved into the May thread yet (I'm afraid of spoilers) but I'm intrigued by Ebert's repeated crowing about the film. Back in June, he said it was a great horror film and defended it when Roeper hated it.

Now that it's out on video, it's Ebert's video pick of the week. He acknowledges that Roeper disliked it, but talks about how great the characters are and how scary the film is.

I'm not saying Ebert is right all the time, but I trust him more than Roeper...

Whatever. Ebert is a jaded ass, imo. I respect his knowledge of film, his commentary on Citizen Kane is great, but he's such a dickhead the last opinion I care about is his. Roeper, what a complete and utter moron. I don't know what are worse his movie reviews or his feable attempts at sports columns. Siskel was the man! He would have liked May too.

I really hoped this wouldn't turn into an Ebert bashing thread. Oh well.

I just get a thrill when the little horror film that got a shit release gets two great plugs from the nation's most watched critic.

Heh, sorry that's just my opinion and I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority. I hope May gets all it's due props believe me.

I actually hold Ebert's reviews with a fairly high regard. It is definitely good to see a quality horror flick getting some merit as well.

Roeper sucks.

I like Ebert because he relates to movies very well. Like 2fast 2 furious came out he gave it a good review because it succeded in blowing up a lot of shit and it blew it up well. Then he sees a film like MAy and he can really relate. He's not a film snob like roeper

I'm a big Ebert fan, though I do have a sneaky suspician from reading his reviews in the last year that Siskel's death left him slightly insane. His judgement has been a little off lately in my opinion. But the good thing about Ebert is that usually, when I disagree with him, he at least makes his point clear and I understand WHY I'm disagreing with him. You cna usually see where he is coming from.
And though I like many were thrilled that he promoted May so much, Ebert is usually pretty bad in his horror reviews. While he does a pretty good job judging action flicks for what they are, he's just horrible at reviewing sci-fi and horror films.
Course this is just my opinion from reading his reviews or hearing them on tv for over 20 or so years, and I'm sure I should substantiate it with some actual examples...but it's 230 in the morning

Don't be so quick to believe Roger's a friend of the horror movie. He typically hates and looks down on them. This the guy who along with his dead critic kemo-sabe Gene Siskel organized a rally in front of Chicago theaters to try and ban showings of I Spit on Your Grave (although, oddly enough, he actually enjoyed Last House on the Left) and accusses the Friday the Thirtenth and Nightmare on Elm Street movies of being nothing more than staged rapes. Try and find his review of the original Hellraiser where he does everything short of call Clive Barker a child molester and his original opinion on Night of the Living Dead, a movie he hated and claimed was a corrupting influence on kids for many years until suddenly he changed his mind and started speaking positively about it. There are horror movies he likes, sure: Fright Night, Evil Dead 2 and Child's Play. But overall expect the negative from him. He's going to public eviscerate Freddy vs. Jason, I promise you; he's already got his mind made up to hate it.

Say what you will about his other reviews, but Ebert nailed MAY, which is the point of this thread, I think.

That and to reiterate the fact that Roeper is indeed a tool.

I really thought May was one of the best, and most moving films I've seen in a very long time.

I watched it two nights in a row after I bought it, which is strange because I run a horror website myself, and I NEVER have time to watch a film two nights in a row. But I just had to in this case.

And I would suggest going to this link and reading Ebert's review for those non-believers out there...he really does nail this one on the head:
