Swine Flu - Page 4

My wife's office just got a fax from a travel agency. We can go to Cancun, all inclusive, for $198 each. Our little girl could travel for free. Is it okay to go if I bring my own bacon?

In truth, you DO have to wonder what kind of long-term effect this whole thing will have on the Mexican tourism industry. It's obviously going to take a short-term hit as everyone panics, but will it ever recover if this flu problem lingers on for more than a few months?

I'm expecting cheap vacation deals next winter...

That's exactly what I'm thinking too, Martin. Mexico is already a fairly cheap Winter destination, but it'll probably be an unbeatable bargain next year.

Over here, the cheapest is Cuba, followed by Dominican Republic and then Mexico. That's an average.

Mexico has the advantage of you being able to check out various archeological attractions, but you can't beat the beaches of Cuba.

And I'm still waiting to check out the cellphones vines.

Well, WHO is officially saying this, as it is now, won't be killing many people.

Some intrepid journalist should've asked them the penultimate question: What's better, swine flu or AIDS?

All I know is that, as a RN, I'm sick to fucking death of people overreacting to this bullshit. We've had about a 40% increase in ER visits, just for people wanting to be checked for swine flu. Just last night, I had two parents that woke their 4 year old up at 3am because he coughed in his sleep. No fever, no phlegm, no lethargy; just one fucking cough in his sleep. Ergo, by their thinking, he probably has swine flu.

Fucking morons. And fucking morons in government.

You know, Im planning on leaving my job in the very near future to get a BSN, and I was just thinking the other day that Im glad I didnt do it out of college...I would be fucking frustrated with what you just described right about now.

If you can, just get an ADN instead. I did. It'll save you both money and time, and you don't get paid any less if you actually work in the field. There's not a single practical thing about the act of nursing you learn more about in a four-year program. The only advantage to a BSN is it's pathway to PhD, which is only practical if you plan on teaching nursing instead of actually working, and that will not only cost you what ever you spend on tuition, but about 40% of your regular field pay as well.

Trust me, as a guy with five degrees (one a masters), go for the smart money.

I figure because I have a Bachelors already I would do an ABSN to finish at the same speed of an ADN.

Also, my plan (as of right now) is to eventually get my CRNA.

ETA but yeah, everyone tells me there is no difference whatsoever between ADN and BSN.

This is really fascinating. The mystery of why it's worse in Mexico. I think this question will actually require the work of sociologists, not to mention the epidemiologists...this could really challenge our notions of the relationship between the developing and industrial world, especially because, as far as I saw it, Mexico wasn't really a "developing country", although one with a lower average quality of life than countries like Canada.

The disparity in quality of life has been made the most apparent since...well, more obvious than I've known in my lifetime, moreso than anything Bono and his ilk could ever preach.
Well dreary, the Canadians will be happy to hear that.

Apparently this virus really hates Mexican and Aboriginal peoples as well. Some here believe we're receiving the dreaded "next worse wave", brought to us by the insidious reserves. I overhear people talking about "them" and how they're "special" vectors of disease going to kill us all. Yes, it's getting ugly in Winnipeg, but it's not only the flu.

The bigotry here is staggering. We have a third-world country in our backyard and they can't even find nurses and doctors to do their jobs in the hardest-hit communities in the world. And we're going to see the same thing, possibly sooner than in the poverty-stricken area of anywhere else, within the city's North End as well (which isn't as bad as it used to be, though still ever-vulnerable).

So, this thing is still spreading. Good times.

My family got sick with it about a month or so ago, downed us for a week but we were fine after that, no deaths.

London is saying maybe 40 a week will die, seems unlikely but... hey, I'm not in London.

You have to love how this thing is spreading, strictly from a film standpoint. 12 Monkey's so got it right.
Here it's spreading like wildfire. We jumped from 1.400 cases last week to almost 100.000 this week. Over 50 dead so far and they just canceled a lot of massive events. Shut down a lot of movie chains, concerts, clubs.
They extended winter holidays for a full month for kids, and parents with small children or pregnant women can stay at home for a month as well.

It's pretty chaotic.!

WHO says new flu "unstoppable", calls for vaccine

Quote:
Several reports showed the new virus attacks people differently than seasonal flu -- affecting younger people, the severely obese and seemingly healthy adults, and causing disease deep in the lungs.

....

"Obesity has been observed to be one of the risk factors for more severe reaction to H1N1" -- something never before seen, Kieny added. It is not clear if obese people may have undiagnosed health problems that make them susceptible, or if obesity in and of itself is a risk.
There was a report out of Australia that this shit just got real. Also the UK just lost a young healthy girl and her healthy GP. This thing is getting wiley and the worst isn't even here yet.

Good Luck Tati, you should be OK if you're into GILF's.
Dude, we've passed Mexico now. We are number 2 in deaths. It's getting out of hand here. Healthy, young people are dying.

Still, most people are living their lives regularly. It's just that the government fucked up big time when things started. They were focusing on winning an election (which they lost) and they didn't pay attention at all to this.
That's horrible, Tati. Stay safe!
