Psst. Swine flu is partly made from Avian flu. And it may stop or slow the virus, but influenza viruses are highly adaptable.

"Hey guys, we have this drug that combats the sniffles, so everything should be okay."
"...But this new strain makes you sniffle, bleed out your eyes, shit your pants, and die."
"We'll use this one version that they already approved so that you won't have to sniffle while shitting your pants and dying. Sound good?"

This part of your problem, a Vick's vapor tent is the still the best thing for congestion. It will get rid of that fatal fluid builds up in the lungs, throat, and sinuses in under 5 minutes flat.

Believe it or not, H1N1 is also the number for the first strain of avian flu as well. They're classified as H1N1 swine or H1N1 avian or H1N1 1918 flu. Kinda like v01 of the virus.

That said, I'm traveling in a few days and gonna hit the airports where these things have been - Dallas and Barajas. And that sucks.

Don't forget your goggles, also you might want to think about some vitamin shots.

I'd also fly Virgin America if you can... they don't have any stops to Mexico and first class has those cool reclining massage chairs!

Well what do you know...I learned something today! Sounds like Yando might know what he's talking about, eh?

All I know is that I banged a Mexican broad this morning while eating a ham sandwich.

Bring it. I figure I weigh more than a pig therefore I'd be that many times tougher to take down.
The real trick would be to fuck a mexican ham sandwich and live.

I'm editing this since I didn't see Snaieke's notations on the googlespam.

Maybe they axed it because we already spent money on it? You know that stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza, that was from Bush (and Kennedy I think). Also, it allowed companies to come up with vaccines with less repercussions.. companies like this...
Tamiflu = Donald Rumsfeld (there's always a crony connection)

It's about foresight, Snaieke. Just like volcano monitoring. Also, as an aside, don't forget that the largest percentage of pork in the stimulus came from your friends in the GOP.

Mexican ham...is that like chorizo or something?

I don't know, look it up. And a Cuban sandwich doesn't count.

That'll teach me about making bad jokes before I get my facts straight.

According to Google though, the bastards can weight between 70-250 pounds depending on the breed.

I figure if I remain in the 179 area I'll be in the clear compared to most of them. If anything else I can fall back on being taller...unless were talking about those super pigs from Brazil.

All of this talk of chorizo, bacon, and ham sandwiches might make this the most delicious global pandemic scare yet.

That's precisely why I was upset that whole mad cow thing never gained as much traction as I hoped.

If we run up against some sort of chocolate induced hemorrhagic fever I may just have to give up on life knowing that there will never be a more astounding juxtaposition of good vs evil to look forward to.

Well, except that Mad Cow was a slow onset disease that gradually and horribly destroyed your mind that was transmitted from eating infected meat. I don't like my horrible disease scares to actually present a real threat to bacon cheeseburgers.

So, you're saying Tamiflu doesn't work? I fail to understand the crony connection when there are only two medications that effectively treat the disease according to the CDC.

Yes... Googlespam...

As to the Pork, yes.. it may have came from them but they voted against it... that albatross the Democrats must shoulder.

Try learning from books, they're much more informative and accurate.

I haven't done that much research, but I assumed they just had an anti-depressant for that.

Since Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease affects the brain, the symptoms it produces are neurological. It may start out subtly with insomnia, depression, confusion, personality and behavioral changes, and problems with memory, coordination, and sight. As it progresses, the person rapidly develops dementia and involuntary, irregular jerking movements called myoclonus.

In the final stage of the disease, the patient loses all mental and physical functions, lapses into a coma, and eventually dies. The course of the disease usually takes one year. The disease generally affects people between the ages of 50 to 75 years. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is called "variant" because it has affected people at a younger age, even teenagers (the ages have ranged from 18 to 53 years old).
So yeah, it's not something you want to catch.

The poison goes to work on the central nervous system, causing severe muscle spasms followed by the inevitable drooling.

At this point, the entire digestive system collapses accompanied by uncontrollable flatulence. Until finally, the poor bastard is reduced to a quivering wasted piece of jelly.

But it's so much more satisfying to know that you are willing to spend endless buckets of time scouring the internet to justify what you already think. I'll cop to not knowing beans about virology...but you won't.

You have to know what your searching for in order to find it. It took me 3 minutes to pull up that link... and I was slightly distracted at the time.

People at work are pretty nervous about this, since the majority of groups we serve are from the New York City school system. Nobody's gotten it up here, and we're pretty isolated, but closing down the schools/mass cancellation would basically end our program until September.

I got back from Mexico yesterday morning. Spent a week down on the Pacific coast, real close to Manzanillo. Didn't go anywhere near Mexico City, but lots of folks who were visiting us (we were all there for a wedding) were from Mexico City. I'm not worried about this in the slightest, but it's funny reading about it spreading, and I wonder how worried my co-workers were about me coming back.

When going through customs, I was asked about how I felt, and was given a sheet explaining all about swine flu.
WHO says there's only been seven swine flu-related deaths, not 152 as earlier reported.

Meanwhile, deaths from regular flu? 13,000.

Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone but GLP is absolutely going off the rails with this thing.

Apocalyptic doesn't even begin to describe it. They're partying like its 999.

"Pandemic Imminent."

I think they're more worried if this bitch evolves.
From CNN: We're at DefCon 5 now.

Quote:
GENEVA, Switzerland (CNN) -- The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert to 5, its second-highest level Wednesday, indicating the outbreak of swine flu that originated in Mexico is nearing widespread human infection.

Dr. Margaret Chan, the U.N. agency's director-general, said the decision means that all countries should "immediately" activate pandemic preparedness plans.

"This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharm industry and the business community that certain actions now should be taken with increased urgency and at an accelerated pace," Chan said.

The annoucement came as the number of people infected with swine flu increased rapidly across the world, and health officials scrambled to get more information about the virus -- which has no vaccine.

"It's a virus that we've never seen before," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

In Mexico, where the global outbreak originated, health officials suspect the swine flu outbreak has caused at least 159 deaths and roughly 2,500 illnesses. So far, 26 cases, including the seven deaths, have been confirmed.
Oh, well that's a decent enough ratio between suspected and confirmed cases to get panicked about.
Until the dead are rising, I'm not worried. Even then, I'm prepared.

Whoa whoa whoa. You want evidence before you panic? Fuck that noise.

I live in Georgia.

It's not an island, I think you need to go the Doomsday method of a big fucking wall with auto machine guns.

Also, it isn't about the number of confirmed cases, its the number of confirmed cases and how far apart they are* (for each confirmed case there are a lot more 'suspected' in the same locality).... factor in the amount of medicine available to treat this and there is cause for alarm. That's why the WHO specifically targeted pharma companies to get prepared.

There is a company in CT that can possibly whip up a vaccine and has already been working with the CDC, they reported they'll need 6 weeks and then access to a large scale production facility after its been created.

Still, no reason to panic.
