The Cinema Club - Milwaukee

They've been showing art movie previews for a few years now at the Oriental on Sunday mornings and have a sign up for the Fall/Winter session now. I don't know if any other Chewers are aware of this, but I thought I'd bring it to attention. Details at http://thecinemaclub.com/cities/index.php?city=MIL

I've been a part since the beginning, and I think it's good value. Could definitely use a shot of younger members though and the size of the group is borderline to keep it going. There's a deal for new members too, so worth checking out the link.

That's a spectacular old movie house, by the way.

Yeah, the Oriental's terrific (and about a five minute walk for me).

Oddly enough, I hadn't heard about this, although I know they used to have a silent film series on Saturday afternoons. You can't do these a la carte, though, huh? My schedule's usually not open enough to commit to that many dates ahead of time.

Do you know what's being shown in the Fall/Winter session? It doesn't look like the site has that info.

I don't think they really know what's showing until perhaps a few weeks before. And they spring it as a suprise on the audience, although you generally can find out the Friday before.

Last Fall was pretty strong with Happy-Go-Lucky, I've Loved You So Long, Doubt, Slumdog Millionaire, and Let the Right One In being part of the schedule. This Spring has been weak, perhaps due to hangover from the writers' strike, with The Great Buck Howard, Two Lovers, The Pope's Toilet, Lemon Tree, Paris 36, and American Violet making up the schedule to date.

They're pretty flexible with cards though. I share my card with a friend when I can't go. If neither of us can go, they allow you to bring a friend and use up multiple punches on the card. They definitely seem to want to encourage continuity though. There's an ala carte fee of something like $20 for one show, but you might as well just sign up for the whole shebang if they're going to charge that much.

The last film of the Winter/Spring session turned out to be Every Little Step, a documentary with a reality show template about "A Chorus Line" and the 2006 revival. Thought there was a fairly interesting discussion about it, especially considering that I think that's such a low profile film that I doubt it's even worth a topic.

I had too many problems with it to recommend it. Some beyond the filmmakers control as the 2006 revival looked absolutely artistically dead, and that colored my whole perception.

Just bumping this back up since the season starts on the 13th. I should at least know the first movie later on the 11th, if anyone is interested.

To those that are interested, the first film of the Fall is Sunday at 10 a.m. Jane Campion's Bright Star. Not a fan of Campion, but we'll see.
