Duke Nukem Never..... - Page 3

Duke Nukem 3D was good because of the interactivity of the environments, the added dimension and some very atmospheric parts. The character of Duke was its biggest liability. So for a new game what would interest me would be great environments, good weapons and as little one liners as possible. And even then I'd wait for a lot of opinions before buying it.
Personally, I like the original two Duke Nukem platformer games better than Duke 3D. If/when forever comes out, I doubt it will be anything special. If it manages to be slightly above average, it will be better than I am expecting.

At the time, no. The character of Duke wasn't a liability at all. Army of Darkness/Evil Dead were not the huge cult hits they are now. It was funny and he was funny. What it did was take a step where the player could be much more creative with their kills. Multiplayer wasn't just Doom-like, which the other clones coming out at the time really were. Find gun, shoot at other guy, find bigger gun, keep shooting. It took things further, and just had a better sense of fun than most games in the genre.

Every single EVIL DEAD film became a monster cult hit pretty much upon release. That trilogy isn't something that people discovered 10 years after ARMY OF DARKNESS ... unless they were only two years old when AoD was in theaters.

I mean, I know different people like different things and all that shit, but I distinctly remember them being "eh".

This. I love games wherein the slot machines, video games, jukeboxes, what have you, are all working entities. I often like to idle away a little time inside a game. Hell, playing Mafia II I often find myself obeying the damn traffic signals, switching the radio around, and just having a goddamn good time in a world someone made for me.

The line to play this game was over an hour yesterday at PAX, and the booth was closed off and no one outside the booth could see any footage of the gameplay, I guess because of the mature content. You have to be over 16 to play. If I have the testicular fortitude to wait in that long ass line, I will give it a go. I read the Kotaku impressions and it sounds like fun. It was pretty awesome just to see that the game still exists... I haven't been keeping up with the news about the rumors and it was a great surprise.

I like that there's apparently a D-Pad designation for "Beer".

Yeah, agree with this.

Each Evil Dead movie was the rock-solid you-gotta-see-this suburban/college/high school cult horror movie of it's day, only nudged out by the next in the series.

Duke's lines were very obvious in their inspiration and your mileage depended on whether you thought the referencing was respectful or not. It was certainly novel/unique at the time for a game character to reference movies you knew and loved. But it's old hat now. Games should be generating all new fun quotes not leeching off movies.

I take back what I said previously. I read some demo impressions and apparently the game is exactly like the old one. One liners and implied blowjobs included. Not interested at all so far. Unless they go balls out and go Crank on it.

Both Giant Bomb and Weekend Confirmed said "it plays like a ten year old game" at their PAX panels.

I had zero interest waiting in line for 1-2 hours just to play it.

To be honest, I don't expect a ton out of the game but I do appreciate someone coming in and helping push out something that a lot of people have put years of work into. On some level, I think Take Two is trying to get this one out to see if Duke Nukem is still a franchise they can make money off of.

The thing that excites me most is the bit about the Whiteboard.

Too late, someone already drew a penis on it. It has been used to its maximum potential.

I never thought we'd actually get Forever. So awesome that we will and that there's a solid release date now!

Still looking forward to/highly likely to buy this, but I'm actually fiending more for Bulletstorm at the moment than I am this. But hey, fuck it, if we get two really fun FPSes this year I'm down.

Yeah, Bulletstorm looks way more interesting. It also gives you an achievement for shooting ghouls in the vagina, which means it will set back the art debate at least a decade. Which is super!

Edit, to clarify: I meant shooting ghouls in their respective vaginas, not some big collective vagina. Just in case that post came off weird.

Bulletstorm is what Duke Nukem Forever should be.  This new trailer for DNF is amusing in how it pokes fun at itself, but I'm still not sold on the game itself.  It still looks dull to me.

So is this actually a finished version of the game they were working on all those years, or did Gearbox throw everything out and start from scratch?

If ever there was a game that needs the equivalent of a DVD extras disc with making-of documentaries etc, it's this. The story of what the fuck went down over all that time just has to be more interesting than the game itself.

I'll still refuse to believe it exists until I'm playing it on my PC.

I'm a big proponent of telling the Modern Warfare/ Medal Of Honor modern style shooter to crawl up its own self important, "cinematic", horrible ass and fucking die but I can't get excited at all for DNF.

If Gearbox wasn't involved, I probably wouldn't care at all. However, Borderlands was pretty kickass, so I'm holding out a glimmer of hope.

I'm really just disappointed that they took the team off the Borderlands sequel to make Duke Nukem Forever.  I mean DNF getting finished is epic but in the end I doubt it will be anything that I would enjoy half as much as another Borderlands.

I was a huge fan of their Brothers in Arms games on the firstt Xbox as well. Off-topic, but has anyone here played the BoA game on the 360/PS3? Was it any good?

I wasn't aware of that. That sucks.

It's definitely not from scratch.  I imagine there was a lot of stitching together and who knows how much original content but I think Gearbox has been working on it for less than a year?  I'm sure a very significant percentage of it is 3D Realms content.

I like the aliens dragging down the Nukem statue in the video.

It will probably be a mis-mash of all the various versions throughout the years coupled with fart jokes and nut-shots.  And yet still I'm curious enough to want to check it out.

I suppose that...Duke Nuke'm wanted to be a...June Bride, as opposed to tying the knot on a...MAY DAY!

Wonder if 2K was afraid it'd impact LA Noire.

"No one comes before the Duke! NO ONE!"

For some reason, this comes off as a publicity stunt to me: delaying the game one last time to get some attention. Especially after seeing the video of Randy Pitchford talking about it.  It just feels a little too....planned or something. Ah whatever. Not sure I really care. I've always thought the old 2D Duke Nukems were much better than Duke 3D anyway.

The latest "uncensored" preview (which has a censored version running on TV) actually cooled me on this a bit even though I wasn't really hot for it to begin with.  Yes, there are boobies.  Yay?  The fact that they added really horrible looking driving sections just made me shake my head, and 90% of what they showed just doesn't look very good graphically.  Oddly enough the only part that struck me as looking very cool visually was the shot of Duke punching a creature, then pulling and adjusting his gloves (which looked great) before punching it again.  I'll still buy this day 1 just because Duke Nukem 3D has such amazing network game memories for me but I really feel like I'm looking to buy this out of nostalgia with nothing they've shown me so far getting me really excited.

Shit...so, on the very same day this comes out, we've also got Barbie Dream Pony Cheer-a-Thon Super Kid Sister Mallarama dropping on the DS.

Torn.

I was excited at "pony", but "Mallarama" made it a day one purchase.

Got a hold of the demo for Duke Nukem Forever last night.  Graphical choppiness/slowdown and LONG loading times.  Very reminiscent of shooters on the N64 and original XBox, and not in a good way.  I wasn't expecting complete greatness, but come on.   I think this is gonna poop in a lot of people's mouths.

I set my Steam to download the demo last night, I should be giving it a try tonight.

Runs fine on pc and xbox, looks much better and plays smoother on the pc. Demo is too short to make any calls on the final game. I like it for being stupidly dumb entertainment, but will it wear out its welcome as fast as that Matt Hazzard game? At least it plays better than that turd so I have hopes it''ll turn out good.

This broke street date here in Oz today, so grabbed a copy after work (360)

I'm a few levels in, and so far so good. It plays pretty much the way I was expecting: big, dumb 90s style FPS action with a few modern game design elements thrown in. Graphics range from great to a bit shonky in spots, but it has a great sense of scale. Going with the theory that given the amount of time Gearbox has had this (And the heap of other stuff on their plate), this is mostly 3D Realms' work. If so, it's interesting how they use things like scripted events that feels very much like modern shooters. It's a shame, really: there's a lot here that would've been as revolutionary as they were promising if they'd got the game out 5-6 years ago.

You can certainly tell the game has 12 years of development behind it, as it has almost more ideas than it can handle. Even after just a couple of hours' play the game threw down a few interesting diversions; it almost gets a little overwhelming at points as you're being thrown new mechanics left, right and centre, though it does settle down a little after the first 2-3 levels.

The humour is a lot more upfront and explicit than Duke 3D, so more prudish gamers may be turned off. Taken in the spirit of transparent goofiness, however, it's great fun. The interactive stuff is all great, and I like that the Cheevos are mostly geared towards experimenting and playing around with the world rather than superhuman displays of FPS leet-ness. Very few online achievements as well, which I personally liked.

Haven't spent much time with the multi yet, but certainly enjoying the SP. And don't worry, it plays a metric shit-ton better than Matt Hazzard.

I just upgraded to a brand new computer system and tried the demo.  I'm amazed at how they have kept the "spirit" of Duke Nukem 3D intact, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.  At any rate I hated the driving sections and very much enjoyed the shooter sections.  My only big questions now are whether they kept their secret rooms concept intact (and I hope they did, and I hope they use pass through walls again so that you find half of them on accident) and whether multiplayer lives up to what I remember of 3D because it was one of the best multiplayer games I'd ever played.

Because I'm a massive pimp I'm going to link to some thoughts I wrote on my blog http://wp.me/pZ0Gv-3j

Anyway, the game is a mess (As to be expected), but worse than that is that it's just a boring one. I know some of the reviews have been hugely vitriolic towards the game and the defenders are right when they say that if it wasn't a Duke game they wouldn't be quite so. But it's also correct in saying that if this was a brand new IP it would've gone the way of Matt Hazard.

It looks terrible, the load times are horrific and the gameplay offers nothing that hasn't already been phased out because they don't work in FPS's (Underwater sections, Platforming).

I didn't much care for Bulletstorm, but it did what Duke Nukem was trying to do all this time and did it right.

Saw this at the Redbox kiosk today. I was really tempted to pick it up but I just don't have time to burn through it right now. Still, $2 a night for this seems about right. I'd think you could finish it up in a few days and just be out a few bucks.
