they are starting to breed.

Perhaps if we kill Russell Brand they will all turn back to normal.

It's not so much the clothes as the attitude that goes along with them.

Unlike everyone's wonderful attitude in this thread? Talking about sniping them from clock towers and what-not? Can you give me examples of these types of people personally offending you?

How many of these people do you guys actually interact with from day to day? Because so far there hasn't been much talk about their attitudes, aside from the whole "they raise my rent and go to Starbucks" stereotype. And the way they dress. I'm not saying they don't do that...but come on, we're going to lay the blame for consumerism on hipsters?

My brother dresses like this. He doesn't go to Starbucks or Whole Foods. He lives in Bed Stuy because the rent is affordable and it's close to school. But he's a wonderful kid, the nicest guy in the world...and a really incredible artist. Whether you like it or not, when you engage in behavior like this, you're stereotyping. And that's just stupid.

All your brother's doing is adding to the gentrification. But hey, not his problem, right? It's a cheap place to live, never mind the people that lived there before he got there.

How many times has he been mugged?

On a board where people talk about jamming nails into their eyes after watching bad trailers, this surprises you?

I guess he should just be a good little boy and pay the ridiculously expensive tuition and not live in affordable housing close to his school because other people lived there before him. This is the dumbest line of thinking imaginable. How exactly is he adding to "gentrification?"

This response is hysterical because a) it assumes that my brother (and myself) are white, and b) that Bed Stuy is a neighborhood in which any non person of color gets mugged on a regular basis. Now some people are showing their true colors, I guess.

The fact of the matter is you're blindly discriminating against people you don't actually know. If you're blisfull in that kind of ignorance, be my guest. Gentrification? Sure, it sucks. Lump an entire group of people into that category and walk away satisfied. In the end, to me, it's your personality that's looking pretty shitty at the moment. And I'm not basing it on what you wear, look like, or where you chose to live.

No, we built this city on hyperbole. I just hate the whole message board tough guy talk. "I'd kick his ass, I'd kill him, I'd do this and that." It's pathetic.

Whine, whine, whine. Anyone looking like a hipster who walks around Bed-Stuy is a mark. It's simple as that. It's easy to tell you're not from NYC wearing that, and you're an easy target- especially if you're going to an expensive art school. The projects are right around the corner from Pratt, you know. I didn't say anything about race, that was your assumption. And I was down there the other day for a friend's art project, so please keep assuming I'm ignorant on what's going on.

Bottom line- this is a silly thread that you're taking way too seriously just because your brother's a hipster.
Who's whining? Me? I'm proud of my brother. You have no idea what he's been through or how hard he had to work to get there. But if you saw him on the street you'd think less of him because of what he wears. You're the one bitching about gentrification and what these oh-so-hideous hipsters are doing to your hipster-free NYC (nobody who ever grew up in NYC wears those clothes? You're fucking delusional, man).

Bottom line- you lump everyone who wears a certain style of clothing into one group so you can feel better about yourself. Please, carry on if you're so inclined.

And Alex wins another thread.

If I see a guy wearing a kilt and an umpire's chest protector, I'm going to assume he's a person of lesser mental competence, a hipster, or Axl Rose. Am I judging people by what they wear? Absolutely.
Haha. Chris takes the win from Alex.

Added to this is the fact that most of the style choices made by hipsters are in outright defiance of judgment. When you're a 300-pound man wearing a headband, gym shorts, a Grizzly Adams beard, and nothing else, you might as well be wearing a sign saying, "FUCKING PAY ATTENTION TO ME."

Saying you want to kill someone over dressing like this is pretty stupid. But then dressing like this and not expecting (or in fact courting) this kind of reaction is far, far stupider.
I find it funny because hipster "style", as annoying as the people can be (like any group ever, ever), involves at least some level of creativity, humor, or sense of irony to actually pull off. Of course, there is a hive-mind to the style at this point, but it takes more effort than flannel*. Just sayin'.

*Perhaps in a separate thread or somewhere else, could someone explain to me how in the fuck this was ever a fad/style?

Seattle bands broke big, people adopted their style, which was derived mostly from living a cold and rainy clime. Loggers, etc.
That makes sense. Hateful hateful sense.
I'd also add to the fucking hipster thing that most of the people dressing this way probably appreciate the attention. I'd bet some of them sent in their own pictures. I mean, they're intentionally wearing silly outfits. They either enjoy people laughing at them or revel in pretending to be oblivious to it.
But every fashion or style or fad or mode of dress is about getting attention in some way shape or form. Typical hipsterism is no more ostentatious than any other comparable sub-culture fashion (outliers and fucking clown shirts aside, obviously). In fact, your typical hipster is wearing a slightly ironic dime-store t-shirt and skinny jeans.... this is, on average, far less attention-seeking than many of the sub-cultural fashions.

I have no problem making fun of hipsters because many of them are retarded. Condemning with such fury though is, at heart, grampaism.
The only thing I hate is the skinny jeans and elitist attitudes. Mostly the attitudes. I can't really say anything about clothing styles as back in the 90's I was what people would call "goth" and then a "raver". Now it's all back to basics. Jeans, tshirt and chucks.

I agree completely. The distinction I would make--and one that I should have made clearer in my initial post--is that I was referring to the examples in the blog, which are by their very nature ostentatious. Wanting to kill people over fashion sense, even in jest, is kinda creepy.
It's been said many many times. But it's basically, ya look like you spend $1.98 on your clothes when in fact ya spend over $500 to look like fucking emactiated trash.

Also, I'm not really angry, I just think it's stupid. It's not like I think less of people in the thread. You're all entitled to your opinions and you're entitled to make fun of whomever you want.

Also, sorry Nooj. Whenever you post something sarcasting, I miss it.
Fair enough. And as someone who has posted a picture of himself in full armour on the CHUD borads I can say without a doubt I am more then willing to allow myself to be made fun of.

Hating the way someone dresses and hating the person are different. I know because I hate the way hipsters dress but don't hate them as people.
Once again a silly thread, pretty much wrecked because someone took it WAY too fuckin seriously. Jesus H Parker, no one is going out there with a mouth foaming hate. It's a distate and boo-hoo on you that you got offended.

Well, I can't speak for the rest of you, but at nights and on weekends I go out and kill hipsters for sport. I've got quite a nice collection of scalps.

Well, knowing myself. I won't make it if I go to jail so I can't engage in that activity. But damn if I don't always wonder where in the fuck did the money to pay for that shit come from?

Mom and dad.

Pretty much, unless every dime is going towards clothes. Funny, I had this very same conversation with my bartender.

The ones with the girl jeans are easy, those tight pants slow them down. Those who simply drink cheap beer for irony, however, those are the most dangerous game.
Tight pants and don't forget about the skimpy V-neck t-shirt that shows off the masculine wisps of chest hair.
You've got to lure them in with the prospect of being ironic.

Ah yes the V-Neck. I admit to owning a couple of these shirts. But there's the v-neck and the DEEP V-Neck. Talk about man cleavage, holy shit.
What the hell happened in here? I don't think anyone was seriously considering going on a hipster murdering spree. Jeez. What's next, I can't make fun of Lindsay Lohan because she is a person with real feelings? Puh-leeze!

My cousin's a hispter and I make fun of him to his face every chance I get. It's so funny how seriously he takes not caring about anything, but true indie music.
Hey, lets make fun of the way old people dress next. That's funny. And so original.

I never said nobody should make fun of them. I think it's lame too (although the examples given in this thread are extreme to say the least). As I've said over and over, I just think it's stupid, a gigantic waste of time, tremendously immature and terribly unfunny. But knock yourselves out!

They're also much easier to snipe, what with the slow pace and all.

You're right, I did. I wasn't trying to be funny or original though. You spend your time making fun of people you don't know on the internet. I think that's retarded!

But whatever. I honestly don't want to make this personal. I just disagree with you guys.

I propose a truce. What's a group we can all make fun of? I vote for Furries.
It goes hipsters, astronauts, furries, hippies, beatnicks.
Furries in the middle of all that? That is so wrong...
Parker, at some point, someone ruder than me is going to say words to the effect of "you're spending a lot of time hanging around a conversation you don't like." I'd say walking away would be a good move (and lightening up, as Ed says.) The irony behind you chastising people in said discussion (wherein people lament a style of dress, not those sporting it) isn't lost on me, by the way.

You're right, done and done.

Hence: furries.

And to further prove I'm not sore, I'll say that I frequently enjoy the content Alex posts on the main page, including the article today on I Sell the Dead. Sorry if my side of this whole stupid argument didn't seem civil.

You want to rip on furries, you start your own original and mature furry thread. They're not as bad as hipsters, anyway. At least they're usually not annoying you in public with their stupidity and ruining your neighborhoods.
The fact that they exist is enough for me...
Boo-hoo-hoo. The hipsters have given me attitude. Whatever shall I do? I am a regular wilting lilly.
Man, fuck hipsters. I lose respect for anyone that is willing to be so easily categorized. Same thing for goths and preps and skater kids and everyone of that sort. Do they have feelings and are the real people? Yeah, they are.

But fuck 'em. They're silly at best and they'll agree in about two years.
