The Sea Inside (Mar adentro, 2004)

If I were to make a list today of who my five favorite actors were, Javier Bardem would definitely make the list, and this film basically sums up why. I've seen him do all kinds of rolls that require completely different performances, and he's damn good in all of them. This is no exception, and might be his best performance, though I prefer his role in No Country for Old Men as his best, and his part in Perdita Durango as my favorite.

He plays Ramon Sampedro, a man who after a diving accident is paralyzed from the neck down, and is fighting for his right to be euthanized, to no avail. The films centers around him and the various people he's close to, both family and friends, and even a love interest, which I found interesting. The film won best foreign in 2005, and is directed by Alejandro Amenabar, who is directing the upcoming epic Agora, and has also made Abre los Ojos, Tesis (which everyone should see), and the one with Nicole Kidman The Others. Mar adentro is a terrific film, and has a very poetic feeling to it, which fits based on the fact that Sampedro wrote a lot of poetry. Extremely different style as well for Amenabar, and he succeeds basically across the board. Check this out .

I agree that Javier did a good job in this film. This one played at my theatre and had a good response from customers. I liked Javier's character so much that I didn't want him to commit suicide at the end.
