So, how did Perry injure himself?

I was *this* fucking close to coming back, but then my car pulled a flat the day before. I seethed the whole night.

How was it?

If you wanted to see Jane's Addiction rock out, then you had a fantastic time. NIN played about 45 minutes (only) at the Tampa show. Still Trent did at least trot out some seldom performed pieces (Downward Spiral). Definitely felt like a cash grab from Trent.

He climbed up on top of one of the big ass speakers and sat there for a couple minutes singing, but when he jumped off he took quite a tumble. Honestly, I can't believe he actually was injured because he danced his ass of for the rest of the night.

edit: But yeah, Jane's blew NIN off the stage.

With everything Trent's doing with his website and the iPhone app, it really seems he's all about fan service these days, so this is surprising. Reading between the lines on his Twitter feed, it sounds like the band hasn't quite gotten into the tour groove yet. I'm going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is the case. I'm seeing them in Austin tomorrow, and I remain hopeful.

Opening act is terrible according to my friend. True?

Band was definitely not in the groove. Then again, it was only their 2nd tour date (so I should give them some slack); however, when you compare them to Jane's Addiction energy level on stage.....

Missed most of the opening act, so can't really comment.

Overall, great to see NIN (although I would have liked to seen Josh Freese on stage instead of whoever Trent has on drums now) but the real reason to enjoy the show is Jane's Addiction (and worth the ticket price).

We got there late (just after they finished), so I don't know.

I hear Saul Williams showed up to do songs with NIN. That would have been fun. Good performance?

Yeah, he did one song. Good performance, but the crowd was not digging it at all.

I always wondered how much the Williams stuff might have divided the NIN audience. I'm not a hardcore fan of either, but it seemed like their two typical audiences are NOT AT ALL the same.

This turned out to be surprisingly, disappointingly accurate. NIN was solid, and were trying hard, but the crowd just wasn't into it. The setlist didn't build momentum very well...too many 'Ghosts' interludes that would just stop everything dead. "I Do Not Want This" was amazing, too bad the rest didn't quite gel.

I'm only a minor fan of Jane's, and they absolutely killed in comparison to NIN. Perry was a madman. Freddy Mercury crossed with Jim Morrison. With ridiculously awful stage banter that was hilarious.

Even so, the venue they played (the Erwin Center) is a cavernous energy vortex. If you're not on the floor, you're really far from the stage, and it feels really disconnected. Even for two bands as loud as these, they both got swallowed by the space from time to time.
