The Red Riding Quartet - David Peace

Series of books set in and around West Yorkshire and 'ull. ie my neck of the woods.

The four books cover a period of time between 1973 and 1983 and look at corruption within the West Yorkshire police force. I've only read 1973 so far but the prose are incredible, they remind me a lot of a fusion of Christopher Priest and James Ellroy. Kind of minimalistic, with metaphor and background detail used instead of straight description.

As such the books tend to be quite harrowing reads, there's a line of madness that Peace goes down quite often that is really well done and never anything less than shocking.

The style is bruising and jagged and its well worth a read.

Yeah, Peace, without hyperbole, is one of the best writers working today, and definitely one of the top few crime writers. And the guy's post-war Japan series is off to a cracking start.

The series is being re-released in North America over 2009.

I think that Devin is about to go gaga over the films so I'm bumping this in the hopes that people are going to track the books down.

How did they address the 1977 book in the films? I just saw all three last week; curious how they absorbed or ignored 1977.

They change large chunks of the books and they use elements of 1977 in the last two films.
