Announcement Trailer.

PSP version

So this week I'm heading back to EA Redwood Shores (or Visceral Games as it's now called... going to be weird not calling it "ears") for a look at this. I'm a massive fan of the poem so it's going to be weird to try and see what they've included from it... even though I'm not exactly expecting it to follow the story too closely.

So if there's anything you'd really like to know about it, let me know and I'll do my best. Hoping for hands-on with this, but we'll see!

Great news, Alex:
Personally, id like to know about the process of the creature/monster designs...did they look at medieval paintings and statues and so on.
Im a sucker for that kind of stuff.
Well I'm sure this game where you beat the shit out of demons with gigantic crucifixes will have all the grandeur, beauty and wit of the Divine Comedy.
I'm sure it'll be more entertaining that The Dante Club. That book is dull. Now call me when I can do co-op on Paradise Lost.
Do you have a wise old man guiding you through the levels like some biblical MS Word paperclip?
It will probably be fun, but I'm not entirely excited for it. Liked David Jaffe's comment about "Creating Dante's Inferno for EA" on bitmob this week.
Please let us know how well the game captures the eternal irresistable passion between Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta, or the bitter revenge of Count Ugolino upon Archbishop Ruggieri in the wastes of Antenora. Also, is the narratation in eleven-syllable tercets?

I'd ask what lessons, if any, they've learned from Dead Space. And is Jason Graves composing?
Id also like to know how will the team avoid having the project be seen by some gamers as a "God of War" clone. Sure, its got originality and style in spades, but surely this must be a factor in making the game.
I haven't read the poem so here's more of a meta question- what did the dev team think when fucking Kim Kardashian introduced the premiere trailer at the Spike awards with a disgusted/confused look on her face and said "It's based on a book?"?

The sign my driver was holding up- http://twitpic.com/544vq

Also got a copy of the book covered in what looks (and feels) like scarred flesh. Pretty nifty.

Looks like we're going to be getting in a bunch of playtime tomorrow, but it also looks like I may not be able to talk about much for a while. We'll see. Hoping for the best- I reread the poem on the flight over. I'll definitely get answers to your queries...
That is the coolest driver card/sign ever. Hope you got to keep it!

Yeah it's in my bag. I did a double take when I saw it, and the driver cracked up.

So, played the E3 demo, and saw a whole lot of stuff that I can apparently never talk about, ever.

The gist- it plays like God of War. The controls will be immediately familiar to anyone that's played it or DMC. It controls and feels the same and I have the feeling that this will turn a lot of people off, and also be the game's biggest hurdle, what with GOW3 on the way. But they're doing some really, really cool things with the characters, location and plot... just don't expect anything close to the original story.

The problem with seeing it this early is that they talked about a lot of things that weren't apparent or implemented just yet, and we played a pre-alpha build which has already been vastly improved. But the potential's there for something special.

Anyway, articles on the way later this week. I'm off to drink.
Since Alex can't talk about stuff, I put up the E3 trailer.

No gameplay? It's looking more and more like an uninteresting GOW slog, and I get the feeling they're avoiding showing off the actual game.

I can talk about the demo... the stuff I saw that I can't talk about is beyond that. But I lost a rough draft of my article and all my assets when my computer took a dump last week. Hopefully I'll have it all up by the end of this week but I'm waiting on the EA folks to send me the screens again...
Are you leaning positive or negative?

Leaning positive, but not by much. Take in mind that what I saw was pre-alpha, and that they already had a (non-playable) build that already looked better than what we tried. But with God of War 3 on the way they're really going to need to pull something special out to convince people to get their game instead, because to be honest it felt like the same game.
That's what I was afraid of. I'm interested in hearing more, but it's mostly out of morbid curiosity.

But isn't this what they are aiming for? To produce a GOW franchise for the Xbox and PC gamers?
Well, if the PSP port is good maybe it can sit on my shelf next to my PSP God of War game.
That trailer is absurd, and I have yet to decide whether that's good or bad.

Although, it would be awesome if that wasn't the real lust boss, and the real thing ends up being a giant man with a big ole package. That one guy that screams "YOU DID THIS TO ME!!!" made me crack up, though. Reminds me of Close Range.
How is GoW any less self-serious and over-the-top than this game?
It's less about any kind of comparison to GoW, and more that it's an adaptation of Virgil's poem - which is unbelievably goofy in and of itself - on top of featuring blisteringly serious cross impalements and boobzillas.

I'm not a fan of GoW at all, but even I can understand the simple allure of jumping into a Greek fantasy and hacking out a Cyclops' eyeball. We've seen so little of DI outside of cinematic stuff, but it looks like it's a long way off if it wants to capture the X-Factor of GoW's mythological setting.
Plus, the main character looks like a weepy dipshit.
Any competition for GoW just means the GoW team just have to work harder to create an ever better product.

Especially since this is multiformat too, yeah? I hope it's good though. I'm feeling so spoilt by all the great looking titles coming out, it'd be nice to have another one I can't afford.
A violent action game that plays like GoW sure sounds like fun to me, and the setting is compelling - this isn't the first game to give the player the chance to slaughter the denizens of Hell, but it does look like a good one. GoW 3 is (I think) Q1 2010 - when is this due?
From what I've seen of GoW3, Dante's Inferno has got a lot of work to do.

Clever, EA... clever- http://www.wearesavedgroup.org/

Apparently they staged a protest outside E3, as well.

Alex Fights Through Hell in DANTE'S INFERNO

http://chud.com/articles/articles/19...RNO/Page1.html
post #34 of 296
Thanks Alex. I would assume that EA will be satisfied with competing with GoWIII. Because if I have to choose, that will be an easy choice.

But I don't have to choose, and this looks like a very competent (if similar) experiment. Hopefully, the Wayne Barlowe work will be seen. One of the nicest things about God of War II was a HUGE artbook that came with the CE of the game "guide". I'd love something similar for this game. The tiny little Dead Space artbook was nice, but doesn't scratch the itch.

Well, there is scholarly disagreement about the translation.

Yeah an artbook would be great for this. You gotta see some of the more disgusting enemies later on in the game. We walked through the studio after playing the game and it was pretty funny, because they ran around pulling stuff off the walls so we wouldn't see any of the later stuff in the game... but we still saw quite a bit.

To this post I've attached a screen I didn't use- you can see how you can impale the babies on your scythe. I believe you can stack a few of them up at once.

While not featured in the Pinksy translation, I believe this is described in the older Mandelbaum version. As Floyd said, there is disagreement

I still can't believe this game exists; it's kind of hilarious. Still, it's good to hear that it actually holds up as a game instead of just an exercise in XTREME!!! literary adaptation. Not that I'm a big fan of the God of War style gameplay. I unfortunately played GOW right after playing through Ninja Gaiden Black and I found it kind of boring.
Good preview, alex. From what I remember, this game is being released at christmas time, correct? If thats the case, I don't see why it wouldn't be a success on both consoles (especially on the 360) even with GOW3 3 months away. There's simply not THAT many next gen GOW clones out in the market and I think gamers still crave that style of game as long as its done right. Outside of Wolverine, DMC4 and that (under-rated) Conan game, what else really is there on both consoles? If they make a kick ass action game and EA market it right, both of which I see them doing, this game should sell.
Great preview, Alex! The game is definitely a "will buy on release" for me, and here's hoping there's a nice pre-order or collectors edition.
I studied Literature in College, so I know some professors of mine would be pissed off about this game...except on the design and look of Hell and its citizens, of course.
You had me at "Barlowe." He is a man like unto a god to me.

In the event that this game should inspire anyone to read the classics, I recommend the Ciardi translation for its extensive annotation and preservation of the triplet rhyme scheme of the original Italian.

An enticing review, Alex; I think I've finally decided to get one of the current generation of game consoles. My thanks.

How does cashing a check make you succumb to Greed?

Got to hand it to their marketing department they're going all out.
Yeah, too bad the game doesn't come out for another 5 months. I feel like this game should be coming out sooner than it is with as much marketing as they're doing.

I think it's more of a shame that all of the creativity involved in making the game has apparently gone to marketing. The actual looks like a geriatric Devil May Cry mixed with a Venom album cover.

It's so, so much worse than what I'd imagined for the lust boss, and I'd imagined a ten-boobed hag with a flamethrowing cooter.
