Con Air- Nicholas Cage - Page 2

Is it wrong to say that the Nazi Muffin is adorable? Nay Hitler-rific?
Ving Rhames doesn't like to have a gun pointed to his head by... Ving Rhames...

Which sketch is the one where the crossdresser is seen dancing to "Sweet Home Alabama" while holding what appears to be a bottle of gin?
I tried drawing that. It came out as the Nazi Muffin.

How many Nolte movies have you seen? He's pretty great.

Have to disagree with Keith's earlier point. The subpar-damn near sloppy-action staging is, along with game A-list cast, part of the charm. Gives it the slight Jack Hill/ B-exploitation feeling.

If anything, the Bruckheimer glossiness undermines the show. Bay's precision would've dampened the vibe even more.

Rath has the best take on the movie. Can't imagine anyone but Cage making the part so much fun. And his wink is all kinds of awesome! (I melt with you)

Self awareness might bug some--but I'm a sucker for moments like Malkovich greeting Buscemi with, "I love your work!"

Anybody see the "extended cut"? Not sure if it's just because I'm used to the theatrical, but, like with Enemy of the State, beats become diluted. Yet, that said, to me at least, the bloat almost makes it feel more like a throwback.

I've actually come to like Cusack in this. He makes wearing socks and sandals cool!

After seeing The Rock the previous year, I thought that Con Air was from Bay as well, as it looked almost exactly the same. It does really seem like something Bay should have done. He does over the top well.

West still has to prove himself. I liked The General's Daughter as well, but that's it for his flicks thus far.

Fair enough.

Have you seen him in the last ten years?

Looking at the new drawings again, I just realized that it was a mistake to add the dashes of color. It makes the general use of blue really stick out. And now all I see is the Smurf's take on CON AIR.

Damn. Of course, it's easily fixed.

Jesus, someone here has watched the Extended Cuts of both Con Air and Enemy of the State? And Con Air and Enemy of the State both have extended cuts? Learning this information is really starting my morning out wrong.

I haven't gotten to Crimson Tide yet.

So that it doesn't look like a Blue Man Group affair... I recolored.

Nooj, with Nazi muffin. You have successfully created the most cudley racist stuffed toy since Klu Klux Klam.

Better copyright it before the Postal Service exploits it...

You should definitely do one of Colm Meany with his 'impotent rage' expression

That is awesome. Great job. The only dude I don't recognize is the one sandwiched between Buscemi and Cusack??

I actually own all three extended cuts of those Bruckheimer action pieces. The only thing I remember from Con-Air is this really weird added couple of seconds after Diamond Dog's intro where they seemed to have added a couple extra seconds of him walking. Maybe it was in the original version but I don't think so. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? It makes for one of the most pointless inclusions ever though maybe there's a whole underground fanbase of people who demanded more Ving Rhames walk but if that's the case, Buena Vista should have gone to a different movie. I mean two or three extra seconds of him walking the cross-walk with some donuts and a cup of Joe in Pulp Fiction is something I can get behind.

I can't believe we've made it this far without mentioning the best moment in this movie.

DYING BLACK FRIEND: All I can think about is how there ain't no God...like he don't exist.

*CAGE gets up. Heroic music plays*

DYING BLACK FRIEND: Where are you going?

CAGE: I'm gonna show you that God does exist.

*Proceeds to beat up prisoners, thus proving God exists.*
post #71 of 90
Not only that, Cage gets shot in the arm and he just keeps on walking.
Not just! He grunts, "Hooooo-ruh!!!"

Tsk tsk. You got the order all wrong. The heroic music plays AFTER Cage says the God line.

That's why YOU'RE not Simon West! And you never will be. Burn.
That's probably a good thing.
Nuh uh! Simon West's penis is bigger than McG's and Bay's combined! It's just that he doesn't feel the need to show it off!

What that has to do with anything is your problem. Not mine!
Okay, so his cock size matters in his hustling career. Even then.
The God line's quoted in the first post. Yeah, I'll be that guy.
Mcnooj's drawing of Ving looks like Bokeem Woodbine, but I don't really mind.

And obviously the best thing about CON AIR is Cage's accent ("AH'M GOIN HOME SON!!!!!!", "Ah just saved yo life....")
That's why I've watched it multiple times.

Found the differences between the Theatrical Version and the Unrated Extended Cut.
http://movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=2994

Never knew there were so many deleted scenes.

"Pinball knows that Cameron once mopped up a notorious con called "The Giant". Cameron tells how he killed him because "The Giant" tried to take his Black Cherry Jello. That makes him sympathetic to the other guys and he can stay on board. Cyrus gives the order to take off his hand cuffs."

I love this movie, which officially has horrified my boyfriend and friends. But I've been known to love some explosion-filled cheese, so what of it?

Probably one of my favorite exchanges is at the end between Cusack and Meaney over the car:

Malloy: "You okay?"
Larkin: "Noooo... (*awkward pause*) Sorry about your... car. I know a good body shop in Fresno if it's insured."
Malloy: "I was bored with that car anyway."
Larkin: "It worked out nicely, then."

The other moment I love - and this would be good for the "Throwaway Line" thread - is after one of the big action moments when they're all herded back to their seats on the plane, and Poe is seated next to Garland Greene, and Poe just looks over at him and says, "Hi, Garland". Just the way Cage delivers the line - it's like a completely bored office worker passing a co-worker in the hall. I find it totally hilarious.

Nooj, the sketches are fantastic! The Nazi Muffin should get his own spin-off movie.

Someone needs to make a montage of all the XCUs of M.C. Gainey.

I got into a conversation about movies with my mother the other day and it somehow led to her hatred of Colm Meaney. For the life of me, I could not fathom anyone thinking that way and asked her why.

Mom: He was just such a jerk in Con Air. What a terrible...agent...or whatever he was.

I merely explained to her that his actions made complete sense to me. Wanting to shoot down the plane full of criminals was obviously a psychic connection between himself and the alternate world Colm Meaney whose own plane was destroyed by criminal action in Die Hard 2. He demanded restitution.

Just got done watching this. The action was never a part of the movie's appeal. Watching it this time, the action is put together really shoddily. But to me, it just makes so much sense. The movie exists to be an action movie, but is so endearing for completely other reasons.

This...

The close-up of one of the cons callously trampling over the diabetic black guy's insulin, followed by the close-up of the diabetic black guy yelling "HEY BRO GET OFF MY INSULIN!" is one of the top 5 comedy moments of all 90s cinema.
...and another one of McCartney's posts about the movie in an older thread (about Chinlund creaming his pants while reading lil Casey Poe's letter) had me cracking up hard.

Nicolas Cage's shitty Southern accent aside, Con Air is a pretty solid popcorn movie. Sure, you have to turn off your brain while watching it, but who cares?
"Whah didn't yew put tha bunnah back in tha box?"
Oh god, this film. It's like a retarded puppy. It's mind-bogglingly dumb, but it so, so badly wants to please you. This is probably the movie where Nicolas Cage officially stopped being a serious actor. I'm not sure that's a bad thing, because if he were still a serious actor, we wouldn't have Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call Ew Orleans. And that would be a horrible thing.
I'm not sure why Simon West's career went nowhere and Michael Bay became the patron saint of OTT, cos this movie does the Bay formula better than any movie the man himself ever made, far as I can tell.
true!

What gets me about this film is that it's an action movie where the concept of the movie precludes action. Nicolas Cage has to stop this murderous band of criminals, but he's trapped in a forty foot by ten foot area with them so as soon as he starts anything the film will end. I think they come up with like three or four different reasons for him to go to the secluded area in the bottom of the plane because of this fact.
