For the Old Timers

What do you think is the most repeated thread/subject?

I think it's the "Hey, didja ever notice people are annoying at the movies?" thread, and all variations (which include the angry "I had the worst night at the movies because of talking/texting/babies" and "I beat up two Jews at the movies last night"). I suspect these are the movie message board versions of people in elevators talking about the weather.
I compulsively posted in that thread even while thinking that I've posted in that thread before. You're right. At least I only half ass contributed, make a lame Wolverine joke.
Are we talking on movie message boards in general or just these boards?

The one depressing trend I've noticed over the past year or so on these boards is the march of the anal-retentives who are trying to find the most absurd categorizations for films. Granted, I'm always happy for the small favor of folks talking movies on a movie message board, but it's really asinine stuff like "Movies with over-rated soundtracks" or "What films made you feel hungry and sad?"

I think anyone would go out of their goddamn mind after riding the same elevator for ten years.

Sloppy celebs? Maybe prequel arguments? "That superhero costume/CGI footage looks like ass?" That one's popular.

Overrated/underrated threads.
I think Dre has it, especially with overrated threads, because you can bet dollars to donuts you'll see the same films mentioned over and over. I actually thought the most recent underrated thread we had going wasn't too bad, but then somebody mentioned Captain Blood.

Famous actresses that chewers want to have sex with. Monica Bellucci and Megan Fox are great and all, but come on, give those jpgs a flippin' rest.

The older woman threads are less mean-spirited than the former, but still only put on display the countless sad existences being lived.
It's the "Destroy your Geek/CHUD Cred" or as I like to call it the "See how bad my taste is!" thread.

This one or how I would ruin a possible franchise in the future. Some years ago it was all about dead porn stars...we evolved.
You don't know how much I wanted this thread to be about some long-gone poster (Will/Kronos/Django etc.) being arrested or making an ass out of himself or something. Ah well.

I think it's a toss-up between Devin's and Dre's examples, and I'm certainly guilty of posting in variations of those threads in the past. Mea Culpa.

I get tired of people starting new threads about existing movies when there are ancient great ones.
Threads that are basically about how terrible the boards are now.
Endless threads about musical artists/bands/groups no one's ever heard of.
The "I don't get the love/overrated/gloat about how bad my taste is" threads. Without a doubt.

Truth.

PM me if you can't find them, people. I'll hunt those f**kers down. No excuse.
I think I agree with the "underrated/overrated" threads being the ones we see the most often, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that we do see them. New movies of both kinds come out every year that will probably make some of us revise our lists. And new Chewers join with some frequency. It's nice to see where they're coming from by seeing what they post on lists like that.

But then, havinig joined a mere 2 1/2 yrs ago, I'm hardly an "old timer", so I guess this opinion doesn't count for much.

And a few very good CHUD lists (on the mainpage) over the years keep these kinds of conversations alive. I've populated my Netflix queue with flicks from these lists and expanded my film knowledge, even re-evaluated existing opinions of mine: Movies that Deserve More Love, You Got it All Wrong, etc.

I don't really know about threads per se, but I DO hate people who just go into a thread and post a list.

No comments, no discussion about previous posts, just a list. Even better when the thread is "the 5 most whatever" and the list is like 40 items long. 5 = 40? Child, you been left behind.
The juvenile droolfest threads irritate me, but then I guess most people know that. It just shits me because this is meant to be a place for serious lovers and appreciators of great movies, yet, while male actors can get entire appreciation threads dedicated to their work and what people like best about them, apparently the only way one of their female counterparts can be discussed is if she's hot and how much said poster would love to fuck her.

Seriously, there are amazing actresses out there, and even some of the objectified favorites around here like Jessica Biel for example are actually becoming more talented with each passing film they do and yet you simply wouldn't know that from how they're discussed around here. It's like we can't even acknowledge their talent until they hit fifty and we can stop staring at their tits for more than ten seconds - unless their Helen Mirren and then we continue discussing their tits instead of their incredible talent.

Now don't get me wrong, I have favorite actresses who I find jaw-droppingly stunning as well (jesus I'm not dead), I just wish objectifying them wasn't all we seem to do around here. I wish there was a little more balance instead of every discussion of a woman round here turning into a fucking fourteen year old circle jerk. Talent is sexy too you know and many of these women are just as fucking brilliant to watch on a screen as their male counterparts.
Oh, come on. Lots of the love for male actors around here is pretty boner-y as well, if we're being honest.

Yeah but you don't get post after post of pics of them with their shirts off and sadly not-so-veiled entendres saying how much they'd like to fuck them. There's at least discussion of favorite movies and performances and why we may think they're as cool as we do.

Look, the thing is, I'm not saying trash the spankfests, you wanna have a 30 page thread talking about Megan Fox or a series of posts of Kelly Brook in a bikini, go for it, I'd just love to see it balanced with a little more grown up discussion of the female thespian personally.

It seems that when an actor has a hoo-hoo we forget they have any kind of talent in the first place.

But it's often a lot of sound and fury to mask the "I want to fuck him"-ness of the affection. Movie geeks are attracted at a very basic level to the male stars we celebrate. Harrison Ford hasn't had the career he's had because of women. And perhaps recognizing that, movie geeks overcompensate when presented with increasingly impossibly hot female stars.

Why don't you lead by example and create a thread to discuss talented female actresses?

I have tried Dragon, a few times, they usually last all of about half a dozen to maybe even a dozen responses before dropping from view.

...it's interesting too Phil, those three threads you cite are from a while back, that's the thing, it hasn;t always been like this, hence my lament.

One's from 2000 and it's all about their vaginas and fuckability.

I'm not saying that element hasn't always been here Phil, it just used to be a bit more balanced is all.

Bah, maybe it's just nostalgia-goggles.

I concur.

As amusing as it can be to see nerds whine and complain about pointless shit it's mostly just irritating.
It's a shame we can't have a serious discussion about actresses around here. I tried to start one about Kathy Bates once and it was shut down. I guess she's just not "hot" enough to talk about.

For me it's this. There are several threads for Bad Boys 2 and Con Air to name but two.

Also threads about the decline of the boards anoy me because it seems to go in cycles.
Kind of like how every graduating class looks back on thier old high school and thinks things have declined since they left?

Not just because Juno made me hungry and sad, either.

I may not really qualify as an "old timer" (my join date says '05 but, for some reason, my account was not active and I was not really posting here until last year).

But I agree with BobClark. I think sometimes people start threads like that just for the sake of being contrarian, which brings me to that thread's kissin' cousin - The Bait Thread.

Both of these types of threads show up quite a bit.

I'm so fucking sick of people starting threads about 1992's MAN TROUBLE, directed by Bob Rafelson and starring Jack Nicholson as a humorous dog trainer. Every. Fucking. Year.

EDIT: sorry guys, I searched through the forums; turns out I'm mistaken.
