I didn't get invited-- I just went to the Groups area/tab/whatever, and searched for CHUD. It'll give you a bunch of results, but if you filter it to show only Groups, the one for this site should be obvious. There's a Join button somewhere on the group's page.
is that for the X-Box? or PC?
Joined Chud's steam group just in time to get a jar of piss to the face...good times.
Might get some practice before going full into the game, since Ive havent fully dedicated myself to it because of my old computer's performance issues.

God this is a clusterfuck. It's patched, you can see the achievements but it keeps telling me I'm not connected to Steam so I can't actually GET any of the achievements.

TF2 is $9.99 this weekend though, and free to play for a few days if you want to try it out. Then again, for 10 bucks you're nuts not to get it.
downside is that the un-locks are now random, and you might get a new weapon or you might not.. I played for 2 hours and nothing..blah..

From what I understand, un-locks are not totally random; rather, they are based on your total number of achievements. In two hours I unlocked the Force-A-Nature, Bonk Energy Drink, and a Football Helmet. This caused mad envy and hate from the Valve community, but I have over 75 achievements unlocked . . . I think the random drops are being used to offset the massive grind concerns held by a lot of casual gamers. For example, I had 12 general achievements unlocked, 23 pyro achievements unlocked, and not a lot to show for that.

I could be wrong in my interpretation of how this works, but a couple people back me up. If you catch a drop you don't like, delete it. That's why they implemented that. The grind is more global now, as opposed to class focused. Now I got a FAN and Bonk! with only 6 scout achieves unlocked, which I think is fantastic. I can't get Scout achieves for shit, but I have plenty in Medic, Heavy, and Pyro.

Ultimately, I think it's too early to start complaining about the massive free update. The new maps are awesome, the new weapons are awesome, and it's going to take a minute to get everything balanced properly. But I've put in a steady 10.0 Steam rating on TF2 for the last three weeks, and I was one of the first to rock a football helmet. I don't think that's entirely random.

Oh, but it is random. Or at least was last night. I've had a 10.0 Steam rating for longer than I would admit. I'd already unlocked every weapon in the previous updates, so I have no shortage of achievements. I even started busting down the Spy achievements last night even though I knew it wouldn't help me get a weapon. After 4 hours of play I received nothing. At 4.5 hours I got my first weapon. One that I'd already unlocked months before.

Admittedly, at hour 5 I did finally get something new (JARATE!) but I saw no hats unlocked in 5 hours of play and watched 1 guy in the course of 30 minutes get all 3 sniper items. Heck, one guy literally LOGGED ON and it announced he'd found The Huntsman. He hadn't even killed anybody yet. Couple that with the numerous complaints on the forums of people being AFK, or even worse being on the Spectator team and getting the new weapons and I can understand people being a bit pissed.

Joined a match today for some quick play, and went Pyro for most of it...i think you killed me a couple of times, Zhukov.
God dammit, after a full CHUD match, this game is going to become an addiction.

The server I go to is normally all-talk which would be good if CHUD folks were on separate teams. Mocking is more fun than coordinating.

So the item drop is supposedly bugged? Or perhaps that is just the excuse. Being that the game is free over memorial day weekend, I suspect it's all a plot to sucker in casual gamers with 'free drops! awesome items! everyone wins!' Hopefully things will get set straight after this weekend.

Although having the Heavy's football helmet made me feel like a Steam celebrity. People were going crazy over that shit.

Do you still have trash talking on the PC? I hope I'd get away from that shit with my exodus from the Xbox 360.

The 6-8 minutes i was online was fucking bliss, with people laughing, praising each other's skills and just shooting the shit around like if it were a bar full of school buddies.

It was almost like LIVE had been created to keep the idiots away from steam.
I don't play too much but i don't think I have ever encountered a single a-hole. Everyone is actually very helpful and gave me assistance and answered all the questions i had.

Just don't accidentally stumble into a music server and complain about the music.

There's very little trash talking. The all talk server I spend a lot of time at is mostly people joking and talking about everything in general. What trash talking there is generally seems to be friendly and confined to people who know each other and are joking.

There's still lots of joking and mocking though, but it's good natured. The other night one player was a spy and he and an enemy soldier were running towards each other on the 2Fort bridge. The spy blurted out for the soldier to look out because there was a spy behind him, when the soldier spun around to look the spy backstabbed him. We all laughed for about 5 minutes.

God dammit, tonight's TF2 experience was a blast...I can see myself putting some time on thsi game every day now.
Also, unlocked the "Force of Nature" shotgun, and got 3 achievements!...okay, I think im addicted.
I even geeked out and ordered http://store.valvesoftware.com/tf2/t...py-mens02.html

I'm having way too much fun with this game.

Looking forward to it! You got a headset, Alex? im not sure if everyone here has one, but come on, for a CHUD match, headsets should be awesome.
Yeah, I'm out. Although I'm glad that I picked up Half Life 2 and Portal on the PC. The graphical detail on the latter and the enhanced control scheme on the former make already great games utterly stunning.

Also Raiftel = Me, if you're wondering who the random friend request was

No headset, unless I figure some way to get my blutooth working. But I doubt it... and eh, i can type pretty fast.

Would the mic in a webcam function as an online microphone?

Ah ok...got a USB set a few days ago, and it works like a charm with TF2...looking forward to some CHUD matches this weekend.

I hate you guys. I'm still waiting on my 2 gigs of memory in the mail. I'm pretty much stuck with a slide show till i get it in.
God damn, tonite's matches were a blast...sole bad thing about the game is the randomness of the weapon unlocks; got the shotgun upgrade 3 times in a row, for heaven's sake!
I cant remember the last time that time slipped away like that while playing a game. My Xbox is going to be very lonely for awhile.
All right, the $10.00 price tag caused me to buy this for the PC as well. I joined the CHUD group. My SteamID is wydren, just like everything else. Also, I unlocked the Kritzkreig and used its uber on a teammate, only to be puzzled when we both died about a second later. Turns out, this new weapon doesn't make them invincible. I guess I've got some learning to do, being used to playing the base game on the 360.

Right. All weapon unlocks are intended to be sidegrades. If the Kritzkrieg also made you invincible it would just be superior to the uber and used all the time. As it stands, it's pretty situational.

As far as the unlock system, I've now unlocked everything other than the Razorback, the Dead Ringer and of course any hats. I can't stand the random system but over time I'm obviously getting stuff.

I'm assuming today they fix The Ambassador (new spy pistol) as I had it one day while it was broken and it was amazing and since they "fixed" it I've gone back to the old pistol. They changed headshots from crits to mini-crits, and in some weird bug actually headshotting somebody was doing less damage than body shotting them. It made the gun utterly useless.

I'm sorry I missed CHUD games this weekend though. I'll have to make sure I keep my eyes open for when a few of you are on.
yeah, im looking forward to CHUDing it up as well, my steam is nwesley@purdue.edu, i go by the name of Dr. Peter Venkman.

I've unlocked the Huntsmen, Dead Ringer and the Ambassador. and well, countless ubersaws, sandvichs and flair guns...

At first I did not like this system but it is growing on me. The level of excitement that you reach when you receive a new unlock far out weighs what you feel when you just unlock it with the old system. Plus it's good to see how the new people are enjoying this game as well! And to the fact that there is no need to grind things out anymore just to get that crazy medic unlock.
This sucks. I haven't unlocked a damn thing yet.

Different strokes. I don't have an issue with people who enjoy this system but I can't stand it. I get that they wanted to kill off the achievement servers (which have now been replaced with servers which allow you to idle without being booted which is essentially the same stupid thing), but I actually really enjoyed trying to get all of the weapons throuch achievements. No, it wasn't fun when you needed to try to get ALL of the achievements to unlock the medic weapons but they relaxed that pretty quickly.

I liked aiming for an achievement and working like crazy at some of them and being rewarded with both an achievement and a weapon when I pulled it off. I spent one night as a medic in a crazy instant respawn server trying to heal for 10,000 in a single life. I stayed alive for 45 minutes, deployed 15 ubers in that period and healed for 10,185 which unlocked my last medic weapon. I've never come close to healing that much in a single life any time since, and I was giddy seeing the weapon unlock when it happened. I'll take that over the lotto any day of the week.

On my laptop the game looks stunning and moves at a pace I'd never thought imaginable. But the touchpad on my laptop makes it almost impossible to play, which is a shame because I want to play NOW and I'm going to have to wait to grab a USB mouse or figure out how to hook my 360 controller up to it.
So this is where everyone's been while I've been ass kicking in Mass Effect. I've wanted to get TF2 for a while but can't find a reasonable way to play on my Mac without Boot Camp. Has anyone found any alternatives or is buying Windows the only way I can go on this one?

I don't know a lot about computers or software or stuff, so it would be awesome if someone does know something!
My friend installed CrossOver for me on my computer and I downloaded TF2 right away, haha.

The achievement grind is still in effect. Got milestone 1 with Scout, unlocked the Force-A-Nature. Drops are weird because they have had a warping impact on the game. Now someone gets something and they say "oh great, another [whatever]". My question is: what the fuck do you want? A hand-held nuke? Lasers? I mean, that would be awesome, but you're getting the same weapons you were creaming over before you had to earn them, but now they suck.

Without more unlocks, the drop system is dumb. They say you will eventually be able to trade them . . . for what? Hopefully they are planning a massive content update, because as it is, it just makes no sense.

That being said, a lot of the unlocks (tier 2 weapons) are simply different. Not better, not more awesome, not worth crying about. Just different. Except for the Huntsman, that thing is murderous.

I just did a quick google search to see if the Xbox Controller for Windows was functional with TF2 (it is) and came across the usual raft of PC gamers evangelising about their precision mouse controls. After a couple of hour long sessions using the mouse and keyboard I really don't get how people can have the dexterity to use both at the same time, and whilst aiming probably benefits from the mouse interface I've got to think that movement is probably far better suited to an analogue stick than WASD

I'd think it's practice more than anything that you'd need. If you're used to one, getting used to another is more difficult of course. There's absolutely nothing about mouse/keyboard that makes it inferior to a controller movement-wise.

That's just what non PC gamers think. WASD will destroy a controller anyday if you are used to it.

I'll try to pull myself from Bionic Commando tonite and put a few matches of TF2 tonite.
My cousin lives in USa and has the game, and we kinda have developed a rivalry thanks to this game.
Bastard is owning my ass so far.

I just joined the CHUD group on Steam and now I'm ready to finally check out some of the maps that I didn't see on the 360 version. I've also been playing RPGs a lot lately and can really go for shooting someone in the head with a rocket.

Same here...I also got L4D through steam too to play with other chewers, i even think that one also works with the 360 players, right?
get ready for the frustration of waiting for an unlock for a character you actually use, Eric.

Dammit, I need to learn how to use WASD controls. I'd be on guys, but I'm still trying to train myself so that I'm not floundering into walls every few seconds.
I'm going to eat something first and then hop on, so it'll be like an hour or so. More than enough time for you to really learn to hate WASD even more than you already do.

I was on for a little while but didn't see anyone that wanted to play TF2 from CHUD. Maybe tomorrow.

Just got home, or I woulda hit you up Cordo.

Connecting a console controller (360 or ps3) to a PC is pretty easy, you just need a free USB port. Mouse/keyboard will ultimately be superior, but I understand the appeal of a controller.

Best advice I can give you: choose classes that the team needs, or go random. Earlier you do this, the better you will be, with anyone. Medics are always in demand, and they can be very entertaining to play as. Just respond to crucial looking calls for help, and spend the rest of your time shooting guys with needles (aim high!). If and when you get an ubersaw: its awesome.

I am more than willing to talk about class dynamics (class warfare!) with anyone; I love TF2 intensely. But I don't want to go on, so . . .
