I remember reading the same explanation in Fango years ago from both him and Campbell . It's like an albatross around their necks. Good job bringing it up again!

You should have followed up with a question about the girl who shot him down when he asked her to the prom.

Bummer to hear this. I'd like to see it just out of curiosity.

So, considering all the problems and issues surrounding this film, wouldn't this be an example of a good movie to remake?

I picture Raimi silently clenching his jaw, his hands balling into fists under the table.

I think I gave away my VHS of Crimewave a couple moves ago. Oops.

Clips!

I still have an old VHS bootleg in the attic. It's been there for a few summers. I'm sure the tape is still fine, right?

I saw it long ago on HBO and remember sort of enjoying it. Like the crazy extended car chase/battle at the end. The broad physical comedy is sort of like a trial run for Raising Arizona.

Should have titled this 'Sam Raimi Needs Your Ideas/Stories For A Bachelor Party'

I picked up the vhs for $2 last year from the videostore I frequent that was liquidating it's vhs stock. It really isn't all that great. The only good that I can think of is Brion James and Paul L. Smith acting insane.

It's just a big mess that has slapstick that just ends up being bizarre rather than funny.

Yeah, I remember reading an interview by Raimi, I think in Empire, where he was barely able to contain his displeasure, to put it mildly.

If Raimi had gotten approval for Bruce Campbell as the lead instead on that bland no-name, this would probably be a lot more well-regarded.

Isn't Frances McDormand one of the nuns at the end?

Ha. Crimewave! After years of being on the hunt, what a disappointment the movie was! What geek could believe a Raimi/Coens combo was capable of misfiring in such a spectacularly uninteresting and joyless way?! Despite horrible reputation, you had to see for yourself. Dull and unfunny. (Even worse than Wise Guys!) Guess in hindsight, Hudsucker was a redemption of sorts.

Since the experience left such a bad taste, surprised Raimi allowed himself to be bullied with SM3.

It wasn't horrible. I wouldn't even call it bad if you're a Raimi/Coens fan. It's just something of a misfire. What I find to be the weirdest aspect is that you can tell all the exterior scenes were shot on a soundstage. I mean every set looks so much like a set I'm not sure it wasn't deliberate.
But Campbell was much better suited for the big jerk role instead of the lead.

There are some creative setpieces, but it really is a mess. Recasting the lead would have fixed a lot, he sucks.

And yeah, Campbell is perfect in the heel role, I wouldn't want him starring in this. Although he still would have been preferable to the lead. Wasn't he cast on the producer's insistence or something?

Anyways, this is one of those movies that keeps my VCR hooked up. Along with all my Rollins spoken word tapes.

I haven't seen this movie in over a decade, and I never want to see it again.

Because my memories of it are a lot better than I know the movie will actually be. When I saw this one, there were just the two Evil Dead movies and DARKMAN. It was much easier to look at CRIMEWAVE (I think my copy was actually called the XYZ MURDERS; don't remember where I even got it) as just a goofy, modestly unsuccessful one-off. Having also really just discovered the Coen Brothers helped a lot; it was like seeing the movie they'd never had the chance to make in college.

Seeing it now must really hurt, since you've got many more successes from each party to compare it to. The film's relative level of failure probably seems a lot higher when viewed today.

Yeah, having watched Crimewave late in in both the Coens' and Raimi's career certainly didn't help my appreciation of it.

I remember reading that Sam said his film had five great moments instead of three, but it was taken away from him, recut, and re-scored. So clearly there was a director's cut before it was released. The footage probably doesn't exist anymore.
