They run Seinfeld in HD on TBS. Sadly, it's cropped.

Where are you seeing it letterboxed? In standard def, I'm assuming?

I like the quality, but I agree, the cropping to fix the screen is kinda reverse pan&scan. Just as evil, in my eyes.

Yeah, it's letterboxed on my local Fox affiliate. I don't have HD anything so it's kind of annoying because it was originally shot for a regular screen with actors standing dead center. It kind of fucks up the composition to see all that extra apartment on either side of the actors.
One of these days I'll have to get one of these new fangled televisions.

Maybe you just need to adjust the rabbit ears, pops.

And another thing-
What's with all these stations premiering new shows in the Summer?! Don't they know that's when all the leaves on the trees interfere with the ariel on the roof? Morons!

From the screenshots posted over here it looks to have been filmed in a fairly standard Super 35 format - the 16x9 version has way less dead space at the bottom, is a little bit tighter at the top, with more picture off to the sides. I'd be surprised if it was not deliberately framed this way in the first place, with the true compromise being the 4:3 version we're accustomed to. George's hand and the bowl of fruit on the counter coincide awfully well with the 16x9 frame, even allowing for a bit of overscan on a widescreen TV.

The choice of the 16:9 ratio for the eventual HDTV standard predates "Seinfeld" by years, so it's entirely reasonable to assume they took this into account when filming it.
