25th Anniversary Edition of HALLOWEEN question

There is a commentary by John Carpenter, Jamie Lee Curtis and Debra Hill on the disc...is this a new commentary or did they just port it from the old Laserdisc?

Same from the excellent criterion disc.

My main reason for shelling out for this and adding a fourth Halloween to my shelves, is for the AMC Backstory on Halloween that will be on it. I watched it last October and it was amazing. And it's supposed to be a bit longer on the DVD I believe.

Hard to believe, but I don't own Halloween on DVD yet, becuase I wasn't sure which one to get, but this looks like the one. FINALLY!
I already have two copies. But I'll be shelling out for this because of the commentary and documentary.

I dislike the idea of having multiple DVDs of the same movie - I have so far resisted, but in this case, I am really tempted.

I have the old Anchor Bay 2 DVD Limited Edition - so as far as the movie itself, I feel the old release covers it well. But I did catch part of that Backstory last year, and it was pretty damn good.

Might be slightly off topic but I fucking LOVE the extended television version (with the violence and skin cut back in). Just the same, I’ll be quintuple dipped on this puppy by the time the anniversary edition hits shelves. Poo! In hindsight, anything I can do to perpetuate the legend of "Halloween" is fine by me.

I think someone should officially label dipping a film more than three times "Pulling a Lucas"

If you find about the SE soon enough, putting the old one Ebay can help pay for the new one. That's what I always do.

Bump...

Yeah I read that too. That's pretty disappointing. Apparently the colors in this version of Halloween are messed up a bit. Also, the reported seamless branching to the extended TV footage has been dropped. The extras look to be pretty decent though so I’ll probably buy it just for the Carpenter commentary. I see another definitive version in our near future.

i have the Limited Edition DVD (signed by P.J. Soles no less)...but I was still putting this as one of my most anticipated DVDs this year for the great extras.....but now its 3 days away and .....im pretty much just buying it for the EXTRAs...i read that DVD fIle review last week and....THAT REALLY PISSES ME OFF that they messed with the coloring...but alas, i'll still buy it...just when i want to watch the movie, i'll pop in my old DVD. Cant wait for that commentary!

Is there any chance that the report of color and sound mix issues are incorrect? Any?

I looked over the screenshots that Nova pointed to and the season of Fall has been replaced by Summer. Huge color differences and not for the better.

I may hold of before buying this until I hear the early returns from people who buy it on the first day.

And this was a sure buy for me since I own zero versions of the film on DVD...

I should be getting it this week, although to be honest, I have the old Anchor Bay edition, so I'm not worried too much about the transfer, although I have been told by some people who own it that they didn't find anything wrong.

Again, I'm just buying this for the extras. I'm not worried about the TV footage, because I have the edition with that, and well I don't really like it anyway, cause for me anything that alludes to any of the crap that followed in the Halloween sequels, devised by Carpenter or not, I could care less about.

For those of you who already picked up the disc this week, what are your feelings?

Is it a great transfer or are the colors drained looking?

Is this the "essential" DVD version? hell, is it a good DVD version of the classic?

Honestly, if you don't do a side by side comparison, I think it's hard to complain about the color correction on this transfer. It lost some of the blue tones in favor of reds and yellows, which give it a warmer feel. I wouldn't say it's washed out or drained, but that's from an untrained eye. Having the commentary and new docs are reasons enough to buy this one. So Anchor Bay wanted to refine the colors. No big whoop.

Picked it up the other day. Wasn't sure at first whether I should after all those major discussions on various internet message boards about the transfer. Man, I'm glad I did.
The DVD rocks. The picture is sharp and crisp and has in my opinion very good color saturation. I don't have any issues with the transfer whatsoever.

Same here. I've been putting off getting Halloween for some time now waiting for this edition. I'm interesting in reading more reactions. I suppose it doesn't really matter since I'll pick up this edition for the features, but I'm pissed at the thought of having to buy one of the older editions if I want to watch the movie with a correct transfer.

The complaints about the color change affecting the look of the fall season in Illinois it was supposed to be for the story, as opposed to the spring season in California it was actually filmed in, are valid. But, you have to be really ignoring what's going on in the movie and focusing on these details to make it significant. It's going to be one of my favorite horror movies whether the grass and trees are green(new edition) or yellow-green(previous editions).

This color timing issue is nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. Having never picked up Halloween on DVD before (I've been waiting for that one "definitive" edition) I took a chance on this one figuring the commentary and documentary alone would make it worth it.

But having read the DVDFile review, I did a side by side comparision with my old Anchor Bay VHS and while some of the early outdoor scenes do look a tad greener and more lush, it's not something most would even notice at first glance.
And I thought all the nighttime and indoor scenes (which would be 98% of the movie) looked perfect.

I haven't watched the entire movie yet but I did sample some of my favorite scenes just to see if they looked "right" and by and large they definitely did. I've seen Halloween more times than I can remember and except for maybe one or two shots it looked like the Halloween I've always known.

So if anyone's on the fence about the new disc, I'd say it's well worth getting.

Of course it's not going to look that bad when stacked up against VHS. You have to compare it to the near-perfect '99 DVD release. There's no reason why the transfer quality of this release should be any different.

Thanks guys I think i'll be picking this one up now. I have waited for Carpenters commentary on this with Shape like patience. Glad I waited to pick this up. You guys put me at ease that its only a small minor thing thanks again.
