Songs Guaranteed to Make You Snoopy Dance

In light of the relatively recent Sad Songs thread, I've been thinking about how fascinating it is that the right song can short circuit your emotional balance. Certainly, some songs strike you because of a memory or sensation you associate with them. But others? The right chord, the right lyric, the right riff can make you sad or happy or reflective for no other reason than it is what it is. So, as the flipside to the aforementioned Sad Songs thread, I'd like to hear what songs my fellow chewers find make them irrepressibly joyful. What songs make you feel good for the 3 and 1/2 minutes they play no matter how terrible things are in your life? What songs--when you hear the opening chords--are guaranteed to make you smile, make you want to get out of your seat and, for lack of a better term, snoopy dance?

To kick things off, I'll list four that make me absolutely (and somewhat inexpicably) stoked for the few minutes they play:

"Modern Love" - David Bowie. The second I hear Bowie's quiet "I know when to go out and when to stay in", it's all I can do to stay in my seat. Silly, I know.

"The Good Life" - Weezer. Oh, that cruncy guitar riff. Oh, that Rivers Cuomo, "When I look in the mirror..." Oh, that "Pinkerton" (what a freakin' great album).

"Let's Go Crazy" - Prince. "Dearly beloved, we are here today to get through this thing called life. Electric word, life. It means forever and that's a mighty long time, but I'm here to tell you there's something else: the afterworld. A world of neverending happiness. You can always see the sun, day or night. So, when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills. You know the one, Dr. Everything'll-Be-Alright. Instead of asking him how much of your time is left, ask him how much of your mind, baby. 'Cuz in this life, things are much harder than in the afterworld. In this life, you're on your own. And if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy..." God, I love this song. No apologies.

"Sheena is a Punk Rocker" - The Ramones (and the Dead Milkmen, to a lesser extent) were my gateway drug to the wonderful world of punk rock. And while pretty much every song in their catalogue is guaranteed to get you pogoin', this one does it for me more than any other. Also, fun "Pet Sematary" tie-in. Take that, Gage!

*Sorry if there's a similar thread. I looked, but couldn't find anything.

You just picked one of my favourite Bowie songs and my all time favourite Ramones song, so kudos for those. Cool idea for a thread, because I think sometimes it's great to just talk about music that either gets you pumped or just makes you want to dance. Of course it's a wonderfully subjective thing as I'm pretty sure most people would hate to think of the songs I'd list as songs to dance to.

Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode

Burning Down The House - Talking Heads

Hong Kong Garden - Siouxsie and the Banshees

Keep The Car Running - Arcade Fire (it's worth watching this to see Win smash the shit out of the camera at the end and panic Jonathan Ross)

North American Scum - LCD Soundsystem

Awesome choice, but it makes me think of Bateman and crew snoopy-dancin' at the beginning of American Psycho.

As for snoopy-dancing, I pretty much look this (hell, I stole this concept from "Buffy" anyways).

I love the swanky feel of that remix. A shame I've never heard it played at clubs.

That's right. I remember them dancing very very poorly.

I just remember it from I think the season 3 finale of Queer as Folk where everyone in the neighborhood goes nuts.

Wolf Like Me- Tv on the Radio
Stronger - Kanye West

Before someone posts the too-obvious Jack Black whipping around to "Walking On Sunshine" in High Fidelity, allow me to posit as a better rendition of the Ultimate Happy Happy Song, not to mention a perfect example of Snoopy Dancing, Felicity Huffman. And understand why for over a decade I've been harboring murderous thoughts toward Bill Macy.

For me, though, Earth Wind & Fire's "September" will never not get me moving.

That's one of my favourite songs of the 00s. Although I've always found it more manic than exhilarating. It's music to breakdown too, in my view.

Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol
Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order
Temptation - New Order
The Passenger - Iggy Pop (a little slower, but always makes me move)

Bad Reputation - Joan Jett
Flannigan's Ball - Dropkick Murphy

Nice. Dropkick Murphys-wise, I'll add "Finnegan's Wake".

It might be 90's rock but

Shame by Stabbing Westward always makes me smile. Yes its an angry song, but I love the Gee-tars.

Because the song always sounded to me like what the Peanuts gang would dance to at their Junior High dance:

The Go! Team, Feelgood By Numbers.

('Huddle Formation' from Thunder, Lightning, Strike works, too.)

Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by The Andrews Sisters (possibly the most toe-tappingest song ever)

"Make Believe Mambo" - David Byrne
Seeing this performed live on the Rei Momo tour was transformational.
"Hoppipola" - Sigur Ros
Sigur Ros is so good it sometimes makes me question my atheism. This is a "so happy I want to weep" song if ever there was one. Live, it was an out-of-body experience.
"Gigantic" - Pixies
I shouldn't have to say anything. Pure joy with happy sauce and a side of monster riffage.
"Virginia Reel Around The Fountain (Live)" - Built To Spill
Doug's voice + Doug's guitar in a perfect marriage. The whole Live album is great, but this has recently been making me smile the most.

The Eyeliners- See you tonight

A song I actually didn't like as a pissy teenager because it made me smile.

ABBA defenses abound on these boards, I feel no need to go into it again.
True. Since Muriel's Wedding I have a weird affection for ABBA.

Alright fine. Doesn't mean I have to listen to it. I have a firm "DISCO SUCKS" policy.

Usually anything by these guys (it's a medley - keep watching!).

I have a firm Disco Rules! policy, but ABBA makes my soul hurt.

OMG! I'm going to hell for laughing at this. I think the Bon Jovi spoof is my favorite. Also, make sure to check out the related video, My balls are ok.

Nah, they just dabbled in it a bit. So did the Stones.

ABBA hatred in 2009 is kind of a quaint anachronism, like bitching about having to dial on a rotary phone.

Calvin Harris has been known to make happy fun songs

Acceptable in the 80's always makes me do a happy jig.
I don't if this song makes me Snoopy dance, but it is one of the few songs that actually makes me want to dance. Oddly enough the title is "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" by The Scissor Sisters. In fact, The Scissor Sisters in general make me feel very happy. Check 'em out.

Jimmy Bo Horne-Dance Across the floor

Larry Graham and Grand Central Station-Pow. That bass solo at 2:57 is the most badass piece of funk ever.

Funkadelic-Tear the roof off the sucka This never fails to get me moving, this version just feels like the soundtrack to the greatest party that you will ever see.

Jesus Built My Hotrod- Ministry.

or

Knock On Wood by Amii Stewart. I used to fucking love this as a kid. I'm going to work this into a film one day if it kills me.

and

Don't Bring Me Down- E.L.O. I could have good with Mr Blue Sky but this one makes me want to hurt people less than I usually do.

Such a good thread. I just need to take all these suggestions and make a mix tape. Just thought I would throw a couple of my own ideas in.

Steel Train - 1999/Don't Ask Me Why

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Stranger than kindness.

The version from the Black Session is perfect, it has one of the weirdest rhythmic session I ever heard.

Anything form the Pixies or Chemical Bros. Some good tunes from Radiohead are perfect for shake it.

The King: "Burnin' Love"

RUN DMC "It's Tricky", "Beats to the Rhyme", "Peter Piper"

Chuck Berry "School Days"

Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock "It Takes Two"

Prince "Little Red Corvette", "Let's Go Crazy"

Doug E Fresh F. Slick Rick "The Show"
