Conan on TBS - Page 52

I was hoping the real Ted Turner was going to walk out sometime, let down.

Hamm was awesome. Screw his age, I want him to be Superman. Use the CG to erase a wrinkle and enhance his Superman build. His current frame can be used for his Clark Kent look and he will look a little more different.

I was happy Conan asked him that.

The real Ted Turner would have been 10 times better than Forte in a bad wig.

And yeah, age be damned Hamm is a perfect fit for Big Blue.

I think it's funny reading reviews of his show that the one thing people keep nitpicking on are the references to TBS and NBC. I mean after a week or two yeah it's gonna get old. But especially in the first week did they really expect him to ignore it completly? "Tyler Perry's Conan O'Brien" was one of the better jokes of the night.
I thought the Turner thing was pretty funny. Just because Forte called Conan a "wig stand", basically. But I like Forte, so I'm biased. Conan already seems more comfortable than he did on Mon. Pretty excited to see this thing evolve.

I thought Turner was great, but I'm a sucker for OTT Forte.

It's weird that you both would mispronounce the show at the same time in the exact same way. Had you recently been hypnotized?

That post was actually part of my subversive attempt to lead Bing past Google as the number one search engine...

Ditto, there was an energy in that show that kept up.

John Dore's bit was f*ckin' incredible.
Yeah, i usually hate comedians on talk shows. But he killed it.

A bit of a bummer that they're only do 4 shows a week. Wonder if that was something Conan wanted or something the networked insisted on? Friday seems like a big part of late night tv.

Im guessing not for the 18-35 demo.

Yeah I've become an instant fan of the guy after that bit. Just brilliant.

Great episode all told, screw the haters, Cera is bloody funny I think and the Bruce Jenner, the hoarder and Deadliest Catch crabs welcoming Conan to basic cable was worth it for the hoarders expression.

The hoarder lady was an amazing piece of casting.

I've enjoyed each of his first week of shows. I agree that Wednesday was the weakest day. I was hoping when he said Ted Turner was stopping by that it was going to be his face with the mouth cut out like on the old late night days. I don't mind the references to NBC and TBS especially during the first week or so. He couldn't have gone out there and ignored the elephant in the room and more importantly so much of Conan's humor has always come from a place of poking fun at himself that he can't ignore it. I also think there's a difference between making jokes about TBS and being on basic cable and joke about being a victim and getting screwed by NBC.

I felt like it was a great week. I wasn't planning on watching this every day, but I've been DVRing it and have found time to watch every episode so far.

Anyone else notice how "on" Andy's been? Maybe it's been too long since the old days but I feel like Andy's stolen the show a few times already. Such a boon to have him playing side-kick again.

Leno and Kimmel are the only ones that do true Friday shows. Letterman tapes his Friday shows on MONDAY (a bit rediclious if you ask me) and both Stweart and Colbert are dark on Fridays as well. So I'm not too fazed that there isn't a Friday show.

Yes she was. The crazy eyes sold it.

One of my favorite interviews from Late Night was when Harrison Ford was on pimping Hollywood Homicide. And at a few points during the interview you could tell he wanted to beat the shit outta Conan and Conan just kept egging him on. So I'm looking foreward to Ford being on this week.

Sweet.

Last nights show was pretty good. Moondancer and the security pat down were hilarious.
It only took them a week to find their groove and go to town. That, more than anything, makes me excited for what's to come in the years down the road.

Tonight with Grandpa Ford should be gold. I don't remember when, it might have been when K-19 came out, but Conan kept trying to get Ford to give him the Finger Point of Doom, but Ford kept dancing around it. Conan wouldn't drop it though, and finally, Ford just went "...LOOK!" and threw out the ol' index finger and Conan just started celebrating. Ah, the good ol' days.

Although to his credit, I think Harrison is more in on those jokes than people assume. Someone mentioned earlier about his appearance for Hollywood Homicide where he seemed angry, whereas to me he was just being dry and sarcastic.
Yeah, Ford's just picking up where Charles Grodin left off.

No man, there was anger in those eyes. It came right after Conan asked him something about Josh Hartnett. After that the interview got real short.
Last night's monologue was lame (which is par for the course as far as I'm concerned, it's usually my least favourite part of any talk show and Conan's strengths lie elsewhere) but I laughed pretty hard at "Police are searching for a man with simple dreams."

I like that thought. Grodin was always a must-see when he was on Carson or Letterman. Churlish.
His biggest weakness are the interviews. He's TERRIBLE at it. Cutting off guests, reading from cue cards and barely leaving any room for improvisation.

Maybe i'm just spoiled by Ferguson. Who is flat out the best interviewer of the bunch, simply by talking to people. Who knew.
too bad Ferguson's as funny as cancer then.
Just not true. Fact.
Conan isn't terrible at interviews. He used to be. Now I think he's OK. Certainly not the reason to watch his show. But he really can manage to make it a silly few minutes. I think Fallon is pretty bad, but he's still learning. He really needs to bone-up on his pop culture. Fallon loves what he loves, but when it comes to most movies and TV (non-reality, non-Lost or non-Glee), he's lost. Ferg is pretty great. Letterman can be great, if he's interested. Letterman is actually interested in the world. Non-entertainment world things. So it can lead to some interesting conversations...if he's in the mood.
Letterman, by strength of his personality, is a better host than just about everyone else, even if he does often coast.
Conan held up a sign, Conan B.J. $25

I sure hope it was intentional.
This Harrison Ford interview is hilariously awkward.
Did Ford have a stroke before he came out, or is he just, you know, old and angry?
Harrison's always like that.
But Conan always handles him the best.

Between Natalie Portman in the Your Highness trailer and Rosario's little dance, this is the greatest day ever.
He seems SUUUUUUUUUPER stoned.

Which is great.
Letterman (like Carson before him) can make a lackluster guest's appearance better by the way he responds or prompts. He's quick, and his ability to improvise or take a conversation in an unexpected direction is why he's my favorite interviewer. Conan isn't there yet, though he sure had to do all the heavy lifting for Mr. Ford tonight.

Ferguson is great. And if you can't see that you're probably...well, I'm in a bad mood but I'll refrain from typing something I'll later feel the need to apologize for.
I've tried to watch it too many times now but I just can't get into Ferguson.
C'mon, he had a goddamn Dalek on last night! What's not to like?
His Doctor Who show tonight has been a lot of fun.
I think Kimmel and Ferguson are the best at interviewing guests. They make it really friendly, as if they already knew the guests long before.

When things get wacky or awkward, Conan and Letterman rule, but in their own unique ways. Conan escalates the situation to a frenzy, while Dave is so fucking cool, calm and collected that he keeps it contained and controlled.

Leno and Fallon just blow. Leno interjects about himself half the time, and Fallon doesn't know where to steer a conversation to save his life.

EDIT: So far the two stand-ups John Dore and Reggie Watts have really nailed their bits. I hope the producers keep a solid streak of comedians going. Nothing worse than a bad stand-up on a late-night talk show.
The Blakc People commercial was pretty good.

Ford using the "Balls" hand gesture follwed by the "money" hand gesture when talking about a possible Indy 5 was pure gold.
Did Harrison Ford actually say "shit"? I didn't know you were allowed to use words like that on american tv?
It's basic cable, baby!
On basic cable you can get away with pretty much everything but "fuck" and "cunt." Watch LOUIE and IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA.
Aha. So basic cable has less strict censorship rules?
Still, one word that Conan said at the end got bleeped.
Unfortunately it's not as simple as being able to say certain words across the board because it's basic cable. It depends on the channel, the timeslot, the advertisers, etc. TBS is probably a bit stricter than FX, the network that shows the other two series I mentioned.
Not much actual government censorship. It's mostly self-policing.
