Conan on TBS - Page 58

Kate Beckinsale was a delight during her segment. I like a woman who isn't afraid of discussing enormous dongs.

This is why Conan will always be awesome.

When the extra tiny credits came up, I thought TBS had just made a mistake with the font size.

But when Conan walked out to that tiny set, I got flashbacks to the Late Night days. Such a fun hour of television.

It's a shame Conan can't bring the same type of energy to every show anymore like he did to the first Chicago show tonight.

Felt a bit bad for that poor old lady when Conan was throwing around the boxes of Taytos.

still though... TAYTOS!

Did Conan get the rights back for the Bear?

What, did you think NBC/Comcast would take Conan to court over who has the rights to the Masturbating Bear? Now there's a character witness I'd like to see!

I'd be willing to bet NBC/Comcast made some sort of deal with Conan as he's been using Triumph on occasion as well. Then again the ownership of Triumph was a bit murkey if I recall. NBC owned 50% and Smigel owned 50% or something like that.

Speaking of, talk about a Triumphant return.

"You're like Nicki Minaj minus the everything!"

Here's that great Jack McBrayer/Triumph clip from last night:

Thanks for posting that, I missed it last night. Just great.

That was awesome.  Loved the guys(red) reactions.

I didn't know Tyler Perry worked here

I had to pause it. His deer in the headlights look as he was being verbally assaulted the first time around had me in tears. I've watched it a couple of times since and it's still hilarious.

I almost choked on my pizza during that Jack/Triumph segment. Oh dear god that was just awesome!

Is that Hot Dog place for real? I mean do they really insult their customers like that?

Yes.  Very real.

I want that skit to sign my titty.

Yeah, never been there but I remember the place from Insomniac with Dave Attell.

Damn. They seem to get a lot of customers regardless of the insults.

That is probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I just finished the clip about a minute ago and I'm still crying.

Just watched it. Heee-larious! Favorite part has to be when Triumph and the lady behind the counter start talking over each other, and Triumph decides to say random stuff instead of doing actual insults. "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants!" I had to rewind it to catch that bit.

After watching Conan now on and off for the past 13+ years I finally got to see him live when he taped a week of shows in Chicago in June. It was unbelievable. I missed out on him when he did Late Night here in 2006 and when he did his comedy tour a while back. But I got to see him this time. It was just awesome. I went to the show where he had Andy Samberg on.

I just recently watched the concert tour docu. "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop"

It's pretty amusing and has some really funny bits, but......

Now, I know it was filmed not too long after the whole Tonight Show debacle, but Conan can be kind of a dick behind the scenes.

I know I'd probably get tired of constantly having to be "on" but Conan really seems to have some cynical acid in his veins. Maybe it's just that the NBC wound is still really raw, but I kinda look at Conan with new eyes now.

I still think he's funny and I enjoy his show but I can't help but think that he would be happier doing a show where he just interviews and plays guitar with musicians.

Anyone else see the docu? opinions?

I saw that doc in theaters.  Really enjoyed it.

I actually loved how honestly the film showed how abrasive Conan could be.  Particularly those moments where he is completely exasperated with being on for all the fans and the family of people he works with.

Obviously, I'm no celebrity... but I could still empathize with that irritation.  But since he has this compulsive need to entertain, he still does it.

And then goes, "GET ME THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!!!"

I love Conan so I really hate saying this...but I have come to an end as a regular watcher of the show. I'll still watch from time to time if there is a guest (like Will Ferrell for instance) that can bring out the best in him. But I have finally gotten tired of the same thing over an over again. The bits are rarely as inspired as they used to be. The monologue has become monotonus and while Conan has become a better interviewer it's just the same old stuff.

This may be a bit over the line...but he is starting to remind me a bit of Leno.

I loved it because it was so raw.  I'd be way more of an asshole if I had to be on 24/7, especially after the whole Tonight Show debacle.  I give Conan and the crew kudos for not editing that stuff out.  Made it seem more human.

I don't think he'll ever get over not keeping the Tonight Show.  You can still see the raw wound every now and again on his new show on TBS when he brings it up.

Agree with everything you said there.

I would also add that his guests seem to have dried up in the past year because there is a new c-lister as the main interview guest every night.  And he NEVER has any interesting music guests on any more, which is strange for a host that is (or used to be) really into music.

On a more positive note, Andy Richter is still fucking great.

Andy still is awesome. But alot of time I even question why he is there he seems like a glorified extra most of the time. To me Conan is stuck in his "Tonight Show" mode insted of trying to bring back the magic of "Late Night".

Yup...

He needs to have more "Late Night wacky":  Chaz The Intolerant Chick-fil-A Chicken

...and less "Tonight Show mainstream".

Yeah, that docu is really good.  Conan seems like a real dick in it.  I get that.  That part where one of his fans makes a racist remark? Goddamn, he went off on them!  I respect that.  It's got to be rough dealing with assholes like that all the time who think they're just like you, then spew some horrible shit.  And he's gotta be like, "These are my fans? Fuck this."

Also, Conan is surprisingly cursey.

So he's emulating Letterman perfectly then.

This is one of the many things that pisses me off about Leno. Not only has he turned the Tonight Show into a black hole of mediocrity, but he breaks the will of other, better talk show hosts as well. He's like some sort of late-night talk show ebola.

Curious- is anyone still watching this? I will always love Conan, but the show is 90% shite these days. Some really poor, unfunny bits lately. The monologues can be a chore sometimes, too.

Nope. And I hate saying this but I don't miss it anymore. I did flip over on a commercial break of the Daily Show and it was an identical bit he was doing when I stopped watching (the dude that switches hats everytime the camera cuts back to Conan) and it just wasn't all that great. He's become safe.

He hasn't changed the show one bit, he's seemingly lost the creativity. I am curious about this "Occupy Conan" thing he's doing and I will probably tune in when he takes the show to Atlanta during the Final Four since he is so much better on the road like that. But I just can't see becoming a regular viewer again.

I've seen bits and pieces of Kimmel and dude has it. He puts on the type of show Conan should be but isn't.

I do occasionally watch Conan depending on who the guest is. (Timothy Olyphant was on this last week, always amusing)

I'm starting to find that the best way to watch it is the highlights that they post online. Watch all the funny parts without having to wade through the crap.

IMO, the TBS show is trying to be 'too big'. When he was back doing Late Night, the show was smaller, more intimate. Maybe if the tried to make it 'smaller' they could recapture some of the magic...?? I know there's some passion there still. The Conan/Colbert/Stewart 'feud' was legendary but that was awhile back, so....

I can't help but think that Conan is all too aware of the shortfalls of the show....he seems to be just going through the motions and I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled the plug when his contract was up.  Hell, he's trying his hand at being Charlie Rose with his 'Serious Jibber Jabber' offshoot (where he does seem to be enjoying himself more)

It should also be noted that one of the big problems is that the talk show 'marketplace' is completely over saturated at this point. Back in the day there was the Tonight Show and Letterman with one or two others. Then Arsenio blew up the damn and the flood started.

Honestly, I would love for him to do this and scale it back.  Continue with the extended interviews online, and create a show or web series that is entirely made up of remote segments.  Conan goes to (insert crazy place here.)  That's always been where he's strongest.

Seconded.

I still watch it (well, the first couple segments, and by "watch" it's more "have on"), but it's more out of routine and stubbornness than anything else. I find when I'm gone for a week I tend to just delete them off the DVR.

He can still be funny, but I don't think his heart is in this anymore.

Just watched great interview over on Serious Jibber Jabber that Conan did with Jack White.

Definitely worth a viewing.

I hope Jack follows through in reupholstering Conan's chair. :)

I think a 30 minute semi-serious Conan would work. Essentially "The Daily Show with Conan O'Brien".

In the same manner I think a full hour "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" could be amazing...just for the interviews. I don't always have the time/desire to watch the full thing online.
With the amazing Jibber Jabber videos, I start to think that Conan on TBS might a stepping stone to CNN...

...Conan on TBS feels slightly unevenly stretched. His tour was amazing, and he needs to completely adjust the talk show format to his strengths.
The first step should be to move the show back to New York City. Or change it up even more and pick a city like Chicago or Boston.

I don't think changing the location will do much. The problem is his show feels too TBS. Dumbed down and uninspired, plus somewhere along the line he forgot that a lot of these stupid bits only work if they're quick one-offs, not regular features.

Another thing, as far as funny bits featuring non-Conan/Andy people from the show, LaBamba sucks, and Deon Cole is okay but only in small doses. They need more weird or awkward people working on the show, to get back some of that Joel Godard magic. More Bill Tull segments would be good.

Conan needs to sign a deal with Youtube, and take his act to the internets. Nobody is watching this on TBS.

Remember catching Conan on Letterman last May.  He saw what was coming.

Conan gonna host the WH correspondence dinner. Hope he brings his A game.

I haven't watched Conan in forever. As a diehard fan who has watched him since the very very beginning (the gaseous wiener, anyone?) I have shockingly little interest in following him with the TBS venture. He had such an opportunity to reinvent the wheel after losing the Tonight Show, and the tour and the documentary were both so inspired. But I think he just wanted to get his crew paid and get back into the game on TV, so he took the deal. It's seriously hamstrung him. He needs to go to the Internet, and do away with the stale talk show format. I don't know if he has it in him. I will be watching the WHCD with great interest, however.

He's usually at his best when he's doing something different, so I'm optimistic about the Correspondent's dinner. The Atlanta trip should be good for him too - his traveling shows are usually his best ones. If it wouldn't be hell on everyone involved with the show, I'd say he should keep the show on constant tour, but I suspect that would grind everyone down by about week 2.
