Cheney on gay marriage: 'Freedom for everyone'

WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.

"I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone," Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. "I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish."

Cheney, who has a gay daughter, said marriage has always been a state issue.

"And I think that's the way it ought to be handled today, that is, on a state-by-state basis. Different states will make different decisions. But I don't have any problem with that. I think people ought to get a shot at that," he said.

Yes he is, I'm sure he only feels this way because his daughter is a lesbian. I'm sure if she was in Iraq or Gitmo, he would have had different opinions on those things too. Besides, it's not like this issue JUST came up. He had 8 years as the second most powerful person in the country (and likely the first), but he waits until he's politically ineffective to weigh in. Yeah, big stones there Dick.

Its pretty much just a game of him, to try and look more relevant and reasonable. Its like the people saying they cannot possibly be racist because they got black friends. Actually.... its pretty much EXACTLY that.

Really? He's made no friends defending the Bush administration, so looking "relevant and reasonable" is very doubtful. He was VP in an administration where the President (and his base) were against gay marriage; it wasn't his place to publicly go against his boss.

And he's said in an interview, years ago, that marriage was for everyone.

He could still be a bastard who supported a pointless invasion and still believe in marriage equality. I'm sure having a gay daughter makes him see the issue in a different light. Are you so narrow minded you can't accept the possibility that he genuinely believes this?

He never said marriage... just unions and arrangements. I can totally see him retracting and saying he meant "only unions and arrangements that ARE NOT marriage."

When it comes to Dick Cheney, I dont give ANY benefit of doubt anymore. Maybe thats unfair in this particular case, but frankly, he routinely lies for effect and pretty much any purpose in other cases, so I am not inclined to believe this, esp. since its a hot button topic for a bit now, with which to win a lot of favors, is not a calculated play.

And yes, maybe he really is, in this particular issue, radically different than the nutjobs surrounding him. Problem is, this for me (and I venture a guess, many others too) is a case of a kid crying wolf once too often... he has misled, lied and distracted with stuff exactly like this far too often for me to believe anything he says in public is genuine anymore. At least at this point of time, where he is also continuosly engaging in throwing mud even after his term of office is over (which I consider really, REALLY poor taste btw.)
