Everything Monkey Island

Videos from the remake- http://chud.com/articles/articles/19...AND/Page1.html

It's funny, I had been thinking about playing through the series again recently, but now I guess I'll have to wait a couple months. The voice acting seems pretty damn solid, and I love that you can switch back and forth at will.

Man, hearing that theme tune brings back great memories. Best news in EVER! Thanks Alex.

Ask me about LOOM!
Funnily enough I played through these for the first time in years just a couple of months back. Monkey Island 2 in particular still stands up as an exceptionally witty and imaginative game, and still looks decent enough that I'm not sure how much I'd welcome a special edition. At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I'm not quite convinced by some of those updated graphics, especially some of the slightly duff looking character designs and animations.

I'm totally up for the new Telltale series, but I can't help thinking that it looks more like a sequel to the more cartoonish and generally inferior post-Gilbert games more than the originals.

(I'm a total Lucasarts adventure fanboy if that wasn't clear enough already)

So, does this means there is a God? And he has good taste in games?
Awesome news, im going to play the hell of this on the pc.

The Witty Remarks Dueling had better be in.
This looks sweet and has certainly given me reason to believe that LucasArts still got it. Here's hoping for more special editions from their great history of games.
They should remake LECHUCK'S REVENGE while they're at it, and of course, the original SAM AND MAX too. Maybe add a GRIM FANDANGO sequel as well.

As for the MONKEY ISLAND series, I'd rank them as follow:

1. MONKEY ISLAND 2: LECHUCK'S REVENGE
2. THE CURSE OF MONKEY ISLAND
3. THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND
4. ESCAPE FROM MONKEY ISLAND
It's the exact same game (you can even switch from the re-done artwork back to the old artwork at any point). I'm hesitant to play this on the 360 if it's also coming out for PC though. I'd rather have the mouse interface right there.

I seem to recall that they already had audio for the original Monkey Island (the old CD-ROM version of it) so I'm surprised they're re-recording it. Maybe I'm just imagining things though.
I kind of wish they'd release the episodes on the Wii. I love the idea of using the wiimote instead of a mouse. Also, my computer is old as fuck and I don't want to have to upgrade in order to play these.

And yeah, they did re-release Secret for PC years ago on CD-ROM. However, I don't recall any voiceovers. They DID recorded new music for it, and it sounded great! Still, looking forward to all of these. GREAT news. Thanks Alex!

Secret of Monkey Island like a motherfucker. I remember, back in the dawn of time, and still after Singer was born, playing it on our old 486 with windows 3.1 (Christ, or was it 3.5?) upstairs and not being able to figure out this one puzzle. This was before the advent of gamefaqs and such. And I, in my infinite wisdom, ordered the hint guide from Lucasarts. I felt like such a dumbass when it told me what I was missing. Oh, adventure games...

And Curse is by far my favorite. And since we're bringing this old gem to new life, does this bode well for my other two favs, Full Throttle and Sam & Max (and perhaps The Motherfucking Dig)? And what about one of the best games ever made, Grim Fandango?
Well I had no idea this was on it's way and it's made my game-playing year.

The Secret Of Monkey Island is my favorite game of all time bar none (with the sequel and Full Throttle coming in second and third) and the idea of an update has been the stuff of my game geek fantasies for many years.

I can't wait to look at those clips when I get home.

Ron Gilbert does commentary on the making of the original game..glorious.
That article's glorious, cheers for the link
post #17 of 229
The SE for Monkey 1 is nice and the repainting of the backgrounds made sense because all the Monkey 1 backgrounds were still directly painted on a computer.
(there were no scanners back then!)
For Monkey 2 I'd really like them to go back to the original painted background art.
A Monkey 2 with rescanned and recolored original art + orchestra soundtrack would be so glorious.
Here is one of the original paintings:

Hopefully the LucasArts archives are as good as the Lucasfilm ones and they still have all the backgrounds.
There are only a 'few' point & click classics? Off the top - Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango (!), 3 Monkey Island games, Snatcher (that counts, right?), Spaceship Warlock . . . and, of course, Blade Motherfucking Runner.

Spaceship Warlock? I played the everliving snot out of that one, and had totally forgotten it even existed until just now. I remember punching that green mantis alien in the face and loving it. Thanks for the memories!

I'd add Gabriel Knight to that list. But that's just me...

Not anymore, Humanoid...Gabriel Knight and King's Quest deserve to be on the list; Roberta Williams was an adventure game goddess.
No love for "Rise of the Dragon" or "The Dig"? I Loved those.
So many of those titles are just boxes I remember looking at each weekend at the Babbage's at the mall. Although I was a big King's/Space/Hero's Quest fan. Quest for Glory 1 and 2 are great.
I quite liked Gabriel Knight. Contraversially I found Blood of the Sacred blood of the damned to be very entertaining. I'm sure a revisit would expose the cheesiness of the whole thing.

Also, Leisure suit larry. Nostalgia talking perhaps, but still great.
I would love to see Telltale revive the SPACE QUEST series. So many fun hours spent on old school Sierra games. Ah memories.

"Thanks for playing. You've been a real pantload!"

So would I but only the first one, the first one was fantastic. The first sequel left me so utterly cold I never even bothered to check out the third one.

...but Sins of the Fathers, was really engaging and even a little bit spooky at times - pretty gorgeous to look at for its day too.

Loved it.

It's getting awfully close to that part of the year where I replay Grim Fandango and berate those friends of mine that have yet to do so, while wondering why I befriend such soulless subhumans. I'll probably postpone that lovely routine and use this as an excuse to berate those that haven't played this.

I'm a lovely person to be around.
*runs and hides before Francis asks who in this thread hasn't played Grim Fandango*
post #27 of 229
A SE of Grim Fandango with high-res models and slightly tweaked backgrounds and better controls (mouse) would be a good thing too.
Man they are tweaking the shit out of most of the classic movies, why not start a Special Edition movement with classic games?

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers was indeed truelly great. The atmosphere when you investigated voodoo murders and the love story started was perfect.
Couldn't get into the sequel because of the ridiculous German setting. Loved Knight's personal bio though (Ritter).

In this case I'm curious, how can you mention 2 Monkey Islands and Full Throttle as fav games of all time and somehow you never played GF?

Ummmm... bad planning?

Honestly I dunno, but I'm more than willing to try and track it down if it can be mentioned in the same breath as my favorites.
Track it down, then. Back when it came out, it used to be sold as "from the creator of Full Throttle", if that hooks you.

I'd recommend not looking at the trailer, if you don't know much about it, as I saw it not long ago and was surprised at how it spoils certain things from the story that are way much better if you don't know they'll happen.

This next year is going to be very interesting. Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer all have games coming out. Someone check the scriptures. Might be a good time to start hording canned goods.
brings tears of happiness to my cynical, battle hardened, old PC gamer eyes. If you could add a Larry Holland designed Tie Fighter sequel, I'd be in heaven.
A few brutally unfair puzzles aside, Grim Fandango is probably the best adventure game ever made, and easily has some of the best writing, visual design and music of a game in any genre. In terms of puzzles Day of the Tentacle might be my favourite - not that hard but playing around with all the twisted time travel logic is great.
I simply can´t tell what I would consider the greatest Adventure game. Between MI2, MM2, GF and Indy4 Lucas Arts has published so many gems that are all worthy of a place in the pantheon.

And this thread is worthy for me just for putting DeathSpank on my radar. A new Gilbert game is reason enough to get back into games after over a decade.
I'm of the Grim Fandango is the best Adventure game, period, cult. I've yet to find in movies or books a "city I'd like to live in" that surpasses Rubacava as far my tastes are concerned and I'm pretty sure a lot of people here that enjoyed noirs and the like would deeply enjoyed it.

But if Grim Fandango is the Citizen Kane, the Monkey Islands would be the Stagecoach and still as satisfying.
Classic favorite Lucasarts games aside (all the monkey islands, and yes, defiinitely Grim Fandango), I quite enjoyed Discworld Noir way back when I was playing it. That was a great game, but only released in Europe. I wonder why.
No love for 'The Dig'?
I dug (no pun intended) the shit out of it on my first playthough... but it's definitely no 'Monkey' or 'Fandango' or 'Throttle'...

To you and me both, fella...to you and me both.
Discworld 2 had a fond place in my heart early on, but it's certainly no Monkey Island.
Grim Fandango has tons of really awesome stuff, but by the end I felt like I was just doing random shit to solve a random puzzle simply to advance the plot. Don't take it personally, Tim Schafer. Maybe it's not you, it's me.

The ones I replayed the most, which I would replay right now, are Fate of Atlantis and Quest for Glory II.

I like how it felt like "hard" sci-fi. At least compared to the dreck sci-fi movies of today. I dream of INTERSTELLAR being somewhat similar in atmosphere.
Btw, is there a way to get the treatment for INTERSTELLAR? As far as I know it's basically the foreword of a book on Black holes done by a renowned astrophysicist.
I'm actually replaying through Full Throttle right now for the first time in about 15 years and while it's short and not madly difficult it is insanely entertaining and a shitload of fun. Like rewatching an old favorite movie.

"You know what would look better on your nose? The bar!"

I kinda hope this Monkey Island special edition succeeds and other special editions are made, particularly knowing that the "switch to the old game at any time" thing silences my "sacrilege!" voice.
You guys are speaking my language! God damn, I loved all of those games. I used to play some terrible point-and-click games just because I loved point-and-click games so much. Anyone remember the Cyberdreams games? Darkseed (and the horrible sequel?) How about I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream?

Also, Blueharvester, where'd you find that original MI artwork? That's fantastic.
This point and click love-in has given me the idea that I should link to this fantastic little thread of ryokens from a while back that I always felt didn't get enough love.

It's thanks to that great little thread I now have shiny fresh posters for Monkey Island 1 & 2.

Thanks ryoken.

Well the artwork was printed in the "Rogue Leader - The history of LucasArts" book. Someone on the forums at Mixnmojo.com made this comparison.
Apparently all the backgrounds in Monkey2 were handpainted, compared to pixel-painted in Monkey1. They just need to find the original pieces, rescan them in ridiculously high resolution and recolor them.
I hope that Monkey SE will be successful so they can make one for Monkey2.
The graphics for the post-Monkey Island games were basically decent, so I'd love it if they managed to create special editions that are totally faithful, only converted to high resolution. It would probably cost a fortune to make, but would there ever be a more gorgeous game than an HD version of The Dig?

While I've played most every game mentioned in this thread the one series that I've never experienced has just been released on GOG- Tex Murphy. I've heard good things but what's the consensus on these?

Particularly since GF has problems with a lot of modern videocards.
The DOS based LucasArts games play fine on a modern rig with DOSBOX or the SCUMMVR program, but GF and I understnd MI4 Have serious issues with Modern Computers, enought to make them unplayable on many righs.
